OUTDOOR COURTS

Middle Tennessee’s Buck Bouldin Tennis Center consists of 14 courts, with six newly reno-vated varsity courts finished during the fall of 2001 and a scoreboard provided by the Mark Tulloch family. The addition of the Tulloch Family scoreboard helps bring an upgraded feel to an already outstanding facility. Mark Tulloch and his family have been extremely generous to the MT tennis program and helping the Blue Raiders remain competitive with the facility upgrades. The eight courts closest to Murphy Center were resurfaced with three inches of asphalt dur-ing the summer of 2012. These eight courts were converted to just six courts and are used as the varsity courts for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Middle Tennessee. The new varsity courts are outfitted with divider fencing between each and are painted blue with gray outlines. New blue windscreens with the MT logo line the fences around the complex, and there is a walkway between the varsity courts and the remaining eight. Also, bleacher seating with canopies was built in the middle for fans at the varsity courts. The $150,000 project was completed at the beginning of September 2001, just in time for the 15th Annual Pro-Am. The Tennis Center also includes offic-es, team rooms, restrooms, an equip-ment storage facility, and a patio/reception area for viewing and the posting of events. The remaining eight courts are for University and public use and are lighted. In addition to hosting Middle Tennes-see matches, the complex has played host to numerous Ohio Valley Confer-ence championships, Sun Belt Confer-ence Shootouts and various state and regional USTA events.

ADAMS TENNIS

COMPLEXThe 70,000-square-foot complex sports eight indoor tennis courts, two electronic scoreboards, pro shop, and lounge area with a mezzanine for spectator viewing. The Adams Indoor Tennis Complex, a joint partnership be-tween the City, MTSU and the Christy-Houston Foundation, becomes the official home of the Blue Raider tennis program.

The tennis project was part of the university’s $80 million Centennial Campaign announced in April 2012. “We are stepping up our game in all of our 17 sports as we make our presence known in Confer-ence USA,” Middle Tennessee President Sidney A. McPhee said at the groundbreaking ceremony. “This facility will make the Murfreesboro area a tennis destination. It will allow us to bid to be host of major competitions, including the C-USA championships, which in turn will create economic op-portunities for the city and county.” The tennis project, which was funded by a combination of university, city and private funds, re-ceived an additional boost from the nonprofit Christy-Houston Foundation, whose president Bob Mifflin presented a $500,000 check to the City of Murfreesboro toward the effort. The Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Depart-ment operate the facility, allowing Blue Raider tennis practices and matches to take place from November until March while also providing op-portunities for the city to host other tournaments throughout the year. The new facility also will give the Murfreesboro community more opportunities to watch the Blue Raiders in action without traveling to Nashville.

The ATC was home to the 2016 Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship and is set to host the 2017 C-USA Men’s Tennis Championship on April 21-23.

Admission is free to any event hosted by the Blue Raiders at both facilities.

COACH CAPSULES

After his first season at the helm of the Blue Raiders, Charlie Ramsay led the squad to a 14-8-1 record overall, including two regular season wins over Conference USA foes. MT came back to win 4-3 over WKU in the first round of the 2016 C-USA Championship, hosted at the Adams Tennis Complex, to advance to the quarterfinals in the tournament.

Brittany Huxley was named All-Conference USA First Team Singles and also First Team Doubles alongside partner Giulia Squadrin following the completion of his first campaign.

Murfreesboro native Charlie Ramsay Jr., was hired as Middle Tennessee’s 10th head women’s tennis coach, July 27, 2015, as announced by Director of Athletics Chris Massaro.

Ramsay, grew up following Middle Tennessee’s tennis programs as an avid player and resident of Murfreesboro.

“Following a nationwide search and interviewing a great deal of candidates we were thrilled that (Ramsay) rose to the top,” Massaro said. “He is a Murfreesboro resident; he is an expert in tennis and he knows the college world so he checked a lot of boxes for us. I can’t be more excited about what he is going to do for tennis at MTSU and in our community.”

Ramsay said he was thankful for the great opportunity to return to Murfreesboro and lead the Middle Tennessee Women’s Tennis program.

“I want to thank (MTSU President) Dr. Sidney McPhee, Director of Athletic Chris Massaro and Associate Athletics Director Diane Turnham for this opportunity,” Ramsay said. “It is such a privilege to come back here and coach at an incredible University with such a rich tennis tradition.

“My wife, Amanda, and I are thrilled to be able to be a part of the Murfreesboro community and help shape these girls’ lives both on and off the court.”

Ramsay brings a wealth of knowledge both as a former player and coach in the tennis world.

Ramsay previously served as an assistant tennis

coach and USPTA Certified Teaching Professional at The McCallie School in Chattanooga, where he led the program to three state semifinal appearances and one state final appearance in four years there. He also coached two players – Cody Gubin (2015) and Daniel Pare (2013) – who earned “Best of the Prep” Awards from The Chattanooga Times-Free Press.

At McCallie, Ramsay assisted in developing high performance junior tennis players, creating and implementing practice plans and tournament schedules, as well as serving as the assistant director of the school’s tennis camps.

Ramsay also has served as staff coach at The Racquet Club of Memphis, head coach of the Southern Junior Cup and volunteer assistant coach for the Memphis Women’s Tennis team.

“I look forward to working alongside (head men’s tennis coach) Jimmy Borendame with the success he has had over the last few years, and learning from him and trying to make it two teams, one goal. I thank (former MT men’s and women’s head tennis coach) Dale Short, who was such a huge influence in my life, as well as those guys who played for him. I grew up around this program and it is an honor to be back involved.”

Ramsay said his goal is to recruit the best girls in the world to play tennis at Middle Tennessee.

“The student-athletes are the center of every program,” Ramsay said. “I have a passion for shaping them into tennis champions, but more importantly, into quality individuals that will be ready to go out and succeed in the real world.”

Ramsay played collegiate tennis at Memphis, where he was named captain for the 2009-10 season. He won the 2007 Southern Intercollegiate Doubles Tournament with teammate Amrit Narisamin. Ramsay played prep tennis at The McCallie School, where he lettered four years and earned “Best of the Prep” honors all four years.

Ramsay is married to the former Amanda Lee Brown. They have two daughters, Addison Lee and Ella James.
