Our blockbuster 71st seasonopens with three favorite
Viennese composers, and withthe Evanston Symphony debutof fast-rising star AlexandraSwitala in Mozart’s final violinconcerto. Schubert began hisfinal symphony a year after attending the premiere ofBeethoven’s 9th, and this“Great” C Major symphonylives up to its Beethovenian inspiration,although without using a chorus and vocal soloists.

celebrate Chopin’s birthday(four days late) in his glitteringFirst Piano Concerto. This isthe concerto in which Katewon third prize in last year’sInternational ChopinCompetition, the firstAmerican to win a prize theresince 1970. The Symphoniefantastique of Hector Berlioz is among the mostrevolutionary orchestral advances in music history, andits 1830 premiere followed that of Chopin’s concerto byless than two months.

Phenomenal virtuoso JeffreyBiegel debuts with the ESO
in the blockbuster of all pianoconcertos, the Third Concertoof Rachmaninoff. The 1996 filmShine was built around thestruggles of pianist DavidHelfgott with the mental andpianist challenges posed by thisepic concerto. Prokofiev’sconcert suite drawn from his1934 score for the Soviet film Lt. Kije is a long-timefavorite, and the program concludes with anotherconcert suite, prepared by composer John Williamsfrom his blockbuster Star Wars.

Our blockbuster seasonconcludes as it began,
with a monumental workinspired by Beethoven’s 9thSymphony. Gustav Mahler’sSecond Symphony includesvocal soloists and full chorus,but adds organ, bells, and amultitude of extra orchestralplayers, both on-stage and off-stage, to create anoverwhelming narrative of death and eventualresurrection. The North Shore Choral Society joins theESO for the choral finale of the “Resurrection” as well asin a brief motet from Mozart’s final months.
