MICHELE O ’KEEFEPRESIDENT & CEO
PRESIDENT & CEO LETTER
2016-17 was another year of growth and development for Canada Basketball and I’m inspired by our continued determination and progress.
CBOC
In our first year, we created two sub-committees –
development/education and selection/evaluation,
and had numerous conversations via Skype. The
Super Clinic in May will be the first time the two
groups will meet in person. It’s an ideal situation to
host these meetings in tandem with the coaches for
key information sharing.
We have just completed our selection for FIBA-
carded officials as per the new FIBA system. As part
of the new FIBA process they have reduced the
number of cards in the world, but as a category “A”
nation, we have 14 cards – the most available. The
selection committee, as appointed by the CBOC,
accepted nominations from across the country. It
was a compressed yet rigorous process. We are
very excited about the 14 nominations.
COACH EDUCATION
The second annual Super Clinic was a great success.
Having David Blatt join our Canadian coaches as a
presenter made for dynamic conversations in the
class room and on the court. The 2017 edition is
promising to maintain the high standard.
We continue to provide incredible opportunities for
professional development via Coach Schools. The
feedback from participating coaches has been off
the charts. We continue to work with the Toronto
Raptors using their training camp and the D-League
Showcase as one-of-a-kind learning environments
for Canadian coaches.
TEAM SPORT COALITION
The Rio Olympics proved to be a pivotal Games
to demonstrate the impact that team sports have
in society. Canada had five teams competing in
Rio and came home with two bronze medals and
excellent finishes all around. For our women’s
basketball team, in particular, our broadcast ratings
were the highest of the team sports.
We have just begun conversations with Minister
Qualtrough on how team sport can assist with her
mandate letter, specifically increasing participation.
This will be interesting moving forward.
HIGH PERFORMANCE
The Canadian women had another top-eight finish
at the Rio Olympics. Strong momentum in the
strengthening of the program. The U17 girls’ team
finished 7th and the U17 boys’ team finished 5th at
the FIBA World Championships in Spain.
U18 teams both brought home the silver medal at
the FIBA Americas championships qualifying them
for the 2017 FIBA U19 World Championships.
We have forged an excellent relationship with
Own the Podium and are grateful for their financial
support, as well as their expertise in solidifying our
Gold Medal Profiles.
HOSTING
This summer will be the first big official push in the
world of 3x3. With our regular hosts, Ontario and
Alberta, we will also build Canada Quest events
in five other provinces that will lead to a national
championship in Edmonton, AB. The culmination
will be a FIBA World Tour stop to be played in
Saskatoon, SK.
As we have laid out our plans previously, we are
just entering the hosting pool. We will be hosting
the FIBA U18 Americas Championship 2018 n St.
Catharines, ON next June. This will be a strong
event played at the Meridian Centre, where the 2021
Canada Summer Games basketball competition will
be played.
THANKS
We continue to partner with the most committed
partners imaginable – Bell, BioSteel, the City of
Edmonton, MLSE, Molten, Nike, Tangerine and of
course the Government of Canada.
We are grateful for the continued enrichment of
our relationship with TwentyTen Group. They have
become a part of the CB family very quickly and our
relationship is burgeoning.
Our provincial and territorial partners are truly
committed to the growth of basketball in Canada.
As we continue our work towards accomplishing
our goals – capturing the hearts and minds of
Canadians, growing our participation to rival hockey
and soccer; and to have our teams consistently
on the podium – we know that we will only be
successful with the commitment across the country.
I also want to acknowledge four of our incredible
athletes who have recently hung up their national
team hats – Lizanne Murphy, Shona Thorburn,
Tamara Tatham and Levon Kendall. Combined,
they represented our nation in more than 500
games. We thank you for your time, passion and
commitment to Canada and we look forward to
supporting you in your future endeavors.
As we continue to build basketball in Canada,
it is imperative that the staff and the board of
directors believe. Our Board of Directors at Canada
Basketball are very supportive of our association
and our strategic priorities. And I know they believe
in our future because of the effort and passion they
bring to work every day, every meeting and every
conversation. I’m appreciative every day for our
incredible team at Canada Basketball. Their heart
inspires me to do better.

2016 HIGHLIGHTS WOMEN’S NATIONAL TEAM
The squad finished with an 11W-6L record, against mostly Tier 1 opponents.
The 2016 Rio Olympics team had an overall record of 3-3 and a 3-2 record in a very challenging preliminary group. This was the most wins in an Olympics.
In preliminary round loss against the USA, the team kept the USA to the lowest points scored in last few Olympics.
Lost a very close quarterfinal game vs. France (who went on to place 4th)
In the 5th to 8th place ranking Canada was ranked 7th based on win-loss record and points for and against. Being in the stronger of the two pools had an impact on this final ranking.
08
WOMEN’S HIGH PERFORMANCEWomen’s High Performance had a busy 2016 season, culminating
with our senior women’s national team returning to the Olympic
stage at Rio 2016. Canada’s women’s FIBA ranking went up 3
positions to 6th in the world.

2016 HIGHLIGHTS MEN’S NATIONAL TEAM
At the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Manila - the Men’s National Team beat Italy, Croatia, China, Puerto Rico, Turkey and New Zealand, all teams ranked ahead of Canada.
Unfortunately, Canada lost to France (World #6) in a fiercely competitive game in the tournament final. We did not have the services of many of our NBA players due to several factors including health, insurance and training decisions.
Though the team did not directly qualify for Rio in 2015, there are significant indications that they are forging the right path. 2015’s FIBA Americas performance was historic in the average points per game, average margin of victory, assists per game and overall offensive efficiency - all at top levels of performance globally.
12
MEN’S HIGH PERFORMANCEThe men’s high performance program had a productive
2016 season, seeing the red and white reaching the final of
the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and capturing a silver
medal and 5th place finish in international competition.
The world’s strongest pipeline of talent (next to the USA)
is evident in the continued success of age-group teams,
now with an historic third-place combined world-ranking.
FIBA AMERICAS PERFORMANCE WAS HISTORIC IN THE AVERAGE POINTS PER GAME, AVERAGE MARGIN OF VICTORY, ASSISTS PER GAME AND OVERALL OFFENSIVE EFFICIENCY

U18/19 TEAM
The U18 team (4-1) won the second silver medal ever for Canada at the U18 level, qualifying them for the U19 Worlds. The silver medal and the closeness in proximity to beating the USA in the finals, continues to demonstrate the growth of our athletes and coaches, as well as the implementation of our new Canadian Style of Play.
U16/17 TEAM
The U17 (6-1) Team finished 5th at the World Championships after a close loss in the final minutes to the eventual silver medalists. The U17s mostly dominated the field, winning by an average of over 20 points per game in the majority of the games. In particular, 30 and 40 point wins versus Australia and France. Their performance is significant, as it marks the first group of athletes that were trained in the Junior Academy to play internationally for Canada.
PROGRAMS
Junior Academy (JRA) To ensure long term sustainability we must continue to focus on the development of our next generation of athletes. Junior Academy has proven results - 7 of the 12 athletes on the 2016 U17 squad were developed in the academy. After piloting the program in Ontario, the program has influenced the athlete development in British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec in 2016. In 2017 Nova Scotia will start the next Junior Academy.
Targeted Athlete Strategy (TAS) TAS provides specialized training to athletes from age 14 through to the professional ranks, who Canada Basketball believes have the opportunity to be high performance athletes for our national teams.
Tall Player Project (TPP) GMP research has identified that podium teams at the highest levels of competition have elite players that are 6’10 – 7’2”. In 2016, we introduced the Tall Player Project (TPP) to identify and develop athletes at an early age with specialized curriculum. 45 athletes between the ages of 15 and 19 were identified across Canada from 6’8” to 7” tall. We are currently working to attach all of the aforementioned athletes to Tall Player coaches.
High Performance Academies MHP has created performance standards for schools/academies that seek to house high performance athletes and field competitive teams, as well as an alternative to U.S. prep schools.
CB worked in conjunction with OBA in the formation of the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) an 8-team league of schools that had a successful inaugural 2015 season. 2016 saw growth of two additional teams and we are working to increase the standards for high performance academies.
National Training Centre MHP is creating a NTC in 2017 that will operate from May 15th – Aug 18th each year to provide daily training for our athletes. Skills training, weight training and therapy will be provided for our athletes daily from Monday through Friday.
Gold Medal Profile (GMP) research has identified that the top countries in the world (excluding USA) begin development at an early age, therefore MHP will be introducing U13/14 age-group national teams.
LOOKING FORWARD

FINANCIALSCanada Basketball continued to develop its financial position
in 2016-17. Strong partnerships from both the corporate and
public sector, along with growing participation provided solid
financial support to Canada Basketball’s high performance and
development programs. Growth in revenue allowed additional
support to be allocated to both basketball development and
business development activities in 2016-17, while Own the
Podium and generous philanthropic contributions continued
to directly support Canada’s current and future national team
athletes.
