THE SUMMIT LONGS PEAK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Welcoming, Embracing, Nurturing, Serving September 2016 The United Methodist Church has been in the news lately, and not always for the most positive reasons. Our new bishop, Rev. Dr. Karen Oliveto, has been in the headlines as the first openly gay, married bishop. There is talk of schism both on the part of the conservatives and the liberal; many moderates are not sure what this will mean for them or for the future of the church. I can't tell you what the future holds for our denomination, but I pray it continues. I have been a Methodist all of my life, and trace Meth- odist roots back several generations on both sides of my family. There are many aspects of Methodism that I continue to embrace, and some I don't agree with, but I realize without understanding our history, our beliefs, and our structure, we can't fully enter into the discussion. It is important to understand what it means to be a United Methodist and how Methodism fits within Christianity. On September 11, we will use scripture to understand some of the basics of Methodist faith over six weeks. We will begin looking at our history, look into something called the quadrilateral, under- stand the Methodist understanding of the sacraments, look at some of our social principles, and end with a discussion of one of the most important Methodist thoughts: grace. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, wrote, “I am not afraid that the people called Methodists should ever cease to exist either in Europe or America. But I am afraid lest they should only exist as a dead sect, having the form of religion without the power. And this undoubtedly will be the case unless they hold fast the doctrine, spirit, and discipline with which they first set out” (Thoughts Upon Methodism, 1786). We cannot hold fast to these unless we understand what they are. continued…

September 2016The United Methodist Church has been in the news lately, and

not always for the most positive reasons. Our new bishop, Rev.Dr. Karen Oliveto, has been in the headlines as the first openlygay, married bishop. There is talk of schism both on the part ofthe conservatives and the liberal; many moderates are not surewhat this will mean for them or for the future of the church. It is important to understand what it means to be aUnited Methodist and how Methodism fits within Christianity.

On September 11, we will use scripture to understand some ofthe basics of Methodist faith over six weeks. We will begin lookingat our history, look into something called the quadrilateral, under-stand the Methodist understanding of the sacraments, look atsome of our social principles, and end with a discussion of one ofthe most important Methodist thoughts: grace.

One of the amazing things about this denomination is beingable to disagree, and still come together as a church. We do thathere at Longs Peak, and I pray we can continue to do that as adenomination. We don’t want to become a “dead sect,” but athriving church that serves God.

Join me as we study our roots, our beliefs, and our strengths,

Pastor Stephanie Kidwell

Half Truths: A New Adam Hamilton Book StudyTrue or false:

1. Everything happens for a reason.2. God helps those who help them-selves.3. God won’t give you more thanyou can handle.4. God said it; I believe it, thatsettles it.5. Love the sinner, hate the sin.

All true? Not so fast. We’veheard these phrases all of our lives, but in Adam Hamilton’s new book,Half Truths, you’ll learn thatalthough they capture someelement of truth, when compared tothe wisdom found in Scripture, they’re really just popular sayings.

Join Pastor Stephanie for a five-week study based on the bookHalf Truths: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves andOther Things the Bible Doesn’t Say. The class will beginTuesday, September 20 at 2:00 PM or Wednesday, September 21at 6:45 PM. Both sessions are possible if enough people registertheir interest. Ride Free LongmontAs a denomination, United Methodists have a rich heritage of

social justice ministry. John Wesley was in the streets of Londonpreaching and teaching and he was also found in the jails and or-phanages, working with those on the margins, changing thewrongs to rights. We also know that Jesus commands us to loveour neighbors.

Over the next several weeks the Longmont City Council will bereviewing all departments' budgets to establish a 2017 budget forthe City of Longmont. I invite you to join me to work to keep “RideFree Longmont” free for another year. Ride Free Longmontbegan 2½ years ago with a cooperative effort between RTD,Boulder County Transportation Department, and the City of Long-mont to improve bus ridership in Longmont. Before Ride FreeLongmont there were empty buses and empty bus stops. Nowthere are full buses and people waiting at the stops. Current fund-ing from RTD and Boulder County will end December 31, 2016.The City of Longmont has the opportunity to renew the contract for2017 with RTD for $275,000 which amounts to less than fifty centsper trip. This would allow local RTD buses to remain free foreveryone.

Many of the trips are being made by our poorest, most vulner-able members of our community. Free bus fare has allowed peo-ple on limited income, seniors, disabled, and low income wageearners to get to work, to medical appointments, grocery stores, library and more. We know that transportation is a basic need justlike housing and food. Ride Free Longmont would allow peopleon the margins, including families with children, to save moneythat could be used for other aspects of life. At the OUR Center weare seeing more families not able to meet their basic financialneeds. Paying $5.20 per round trip per person will add a burdenon their already tight budgets.

79% of the current bus riders in Longmont make less than$35,000 per year. Many people on limited incomes do not havethe luxury of owning a car. They are transit dependent. Throughthe Longmont Town Hall telephone meetings and Envision Long-mont I learned that 42% of the residents of Longmont are interest-ed in ways of improving alternative modes of transportation. RideFree Longmont is an excellent way and, it works.

Rev. Sandy Stewart

I spoke to the Longmont City Council on Tuesday, August 9,asking them to continue to fund Ride Free Longmont into 2017and you could do the same. Writing to City Council or writing aneditorial for the Times Call newspaper are excellent ways to dosocial justice ministry. I have plenty of facts and figures I can sup-ply you if you are interested in having your voice heard to benefitour neighbors who struggle to keep a roof over their heads andfood on their tables.

A pastor I used to know frequently quoted another with thisline: "Evangelism is just one beggar telling another beggarwhere to find bread." Here at Longs Peak UMC we have achurch with a rich history, but we all need to do what it takes togrow. The best way to get new bread-seekers to come throughour doors is for YOU to invite them! Remember our Easter egghunt back in March? We welcomed 100+ kids that day, and one-third of the visitors polled indicated that they had attendedbecause they had been invited by a friend.

Surely you and your kids know someone who is looking forsomething more in their life: a family who recently moved inaround the corner, a new classmate in your child's class or Scouttroop, a fun-looking kid you frequently see walking a dog on yourstreet… all of these could be candidates for you to invite to churchor to Sunday school or to Wednesday night dinner, where theycan come try the life-giving bread that Longs Peak has to offer.Disclaimer: this doesn't have to launch any kind of theologicaldebate. Play the role of the disciple Philip from John 1:39: "Comeand see."

STARTING AUGUST 28: Welcome back to Deep Blue Kids!Join us each week with Kat, Asia, Edgar, Caleb, and their dogIndie, on a Deep Blue adventure through the Bible. The DeepBlue curriculum is a new awe-inspiring resource for children thatincludes adventure, exciting stories, science experiments, arts andcrafts, animated video storytelling, and active games—allcombined into a living-faith experience that will help childrendiscover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today!

Each weekly adventure begins at church at 10:25 AM* andthen continues through the week at home with parent conversa-tion and activity tips both printed and online. continued…

"The value of identity of course isthat often with it comes purpose."

I found this quote to ring verytrue in understanding God and our

relationship with God. Despite quite alengthy search for context, I could not find

the source of this quote by Richard Grant.Unfortunately I do not know, with any real certainty, what Grantwas trying to convey to his readers. I often prefer to not quotesomeone unless I know the intended message from the author. In seminary, it is a rudimentary teaching to not use a verse ofscripture solely to prove a point. You should instead referencethe greater passage related to the verse and explain the historicalcontext. Otherwise you run the risk of proof-texting, the practiceof using isolated, out-of-context quotations from a document toestablish an argument in exegesis. It's a theological no-no! If youfind the source, please let me know. I love reading and under-standing the perspective of others. Please offer me some grace ifI misplace the context here. In the meantime, however, I feel thatin this case I may be pretty safe to use Grant's words to set ourcompass toward the reign and the Kingdom of God. I am certainthat whether or not in context, the quote above is easily applied toour identity in Christ.

The focus of youth group this year (during our typical youthgroup gatherings, when we aren't serving others or participating infun/fellowship opportunities) is on our identity in Jesus Christ.Throughout the school year, the youth will explore what it meansto have their identity in Christ. A few examples are: I am a child ofGod (John 1:12), I am a friend of Jesus (John 15:15), I am justifiedand redeemed (Romans 3:24). Fear not, we will explore thegreater passage to understand our identity- remember, no proof-texting. It is my goal to usher the youth toward an understandingof their purpose by understanding their identity in Christ. Whenwe know "who" we are, we then become familiar with "why" weare.

In the midst of puberty and maturing (physically, cognitively, socially, emotionally, and spiritually), youth are always seekingtheir identity and their purpose. Teenagers are suddenly able to

think abstractly about ideas and about the world around them.Sometimes quite abruptly, the world ceases to be all about our-selves anymore, despite our greatest efforts to hold onto our child-hood ideas of our significance.

Note, our great efforts to hold onto control of the world (as weknow it, at least) can be exhibited in a teenager's goofiness, anoutburst of emotion that doesn't seem to fit the situation. Throughour realization that we aren't the center of the universe, we beginto wonder who we really are and why we exist. That is why it is soimportant that young people are reminded of their identity, theirvalue, their purpose. It is our task as caring adults in the church toteach our young people and to reinforce over and over and overagain how much God loves us all.
