ProtoDUNE BIG MeetingAugust 23, 2016

By US copyright law, we are not allowed to use the term “LAPPD”. So “pLAPPD” refers to the Argonne 6x6 cm2 prototype R&D devices.

The Initial Mad Rush

2

• We received two pLAPPDs on loan for testing, mounted on readout boards, less than two weeks before the planned summer accelerator shutdown.

• The immediate goal was insert at least one LAPPD in the LArIAT beamline in the FTBF and read out via some spare channels of a CAEN V1751 already being read out by the LArIAT DAQ.• Quickly built a light-tight mount with a thin window• Made 50’ RG-174U signal cables with SMA and MCX connectors• Ran signal cables from LArIAT beamline to crates 15’ away• Filled out a lot of paperwork to be allowed to operate the detectors at the FTBF

The Initial Mad Rush

3

• With no time to test the pLAPPDs and taking Argonne’s word that the devices worked, we mounted one of the devices in the LArIAT beamline.

• We had only enough electronics channels to read out one side of one device, so we chose a single pLAPPD to install and readout during the 1 week of remaining beam.

• We were told to look at a particular electronics channel in the LArIAT DAQ, and we saw signals! But alas, several days later (1 day before beam shutdown) we discovered that that was the wrong channel. Looking at the correct channel, we saw nothing but noise.

• Upon inspection, the board we put into the beam was missing some componentson the board. At this point, beam turned off for the summer.

Since the Initial Mad Rush

• Once beam shut off, we went back to basics and simply read out single pe noise from the “good board” in a digital scope, and recorded pulse shapes from each channel and with different cable lengths.

• Pulses were recorded in digital format and are currently being analyzed.• These tests required connecting and disconnecting cables from board many times;

at some point, I believe some components on the board became loose, as the signals became very noisy, erratic and the board began misbehaving. At that point, the scope measurements were ended.

• I brought both devices back to Argonne; they quickly repaired the original “bad board” (#53), and are looking into what happened with the “good board” (#52).

• We will resume scope measurements of thermal emission single pe pulse shapes with tube #53 this week.

• While beam is off:• The pLAPPDs will be mounted in an

existing muon telescope at the FTBF• Determine muon position on the LAPPDs

from 4 wire chambers• Measure signal efficiency and position resolution of the pLAPPDs• Gain experience reading out the pLAPPDs in an art-daq-based DAQ• We will use 8-channel CAEN V1751s (1 ns sampling) to read the devices out, but

we are purchasing a 32-channel CAEN V1742 module, which has 200 ps sampling. Need to confirm that the V1742 will meet the needs of ProtoDUNE.

• We are ordering new devices from Argonne for the ProtoDUNE Project.
