WELCOMEToday we welcome our new pastor Rt. Rev. Mitred Pawlo Berezniak, we pray that our time together will be a source of blessing leading to salvation for us all and all our efforts will be for the Glory of God and the building up of His Heavenly Kingdom.

TO MY DEAR PARISHIONERS AND SUPPORTERSOF THE CHURCH OF DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT SOBOR

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ – it is with this joyful greeting - to give glory and praise to our Divine Saviour, Jesus Christ - is how I will welcome you in the House of God and at every opportunity, when we meet in His name.     And today, as the new rector in your parish community of Descent of the Holy Spirit Sobor, I invite you dear brothers and sisters, to give glory and praise to God with prayerful lips and from the depths of your souls. His commandments and teaching - this is for us the law of life. Jesus Christ clearly says: "Who comes after me and takes up my cross on his shoulder - he will be saved".     The preaching of Christ the Saviour shows the way that we must go in life. In the Church, as in the parish community, there is no room for wrongs, untruth or hypocrisy. Here, personal good is not separated from the good of others. here, there is no personal gain. The road to personal blessings and happiness obtained only through the establishment the Kingdom of God on earth, which is the parish community.     The road is hard, but with faith in the success brought by doing good works in Christ’s name, going this way in life without doubt or criticism, we can create a paradise in our parish. To achieve this you must forget what was bad yesterday, a month ago or a year ago. With new strength, energy, and hope in a better future, let us all come together to work for the prosperity of our faith and parish. There will be some difficulties, but if we seek consensus in our thoughts, as hard as we all can, then we will be able to transfer to the younger generation a healthy harvest of spiritual work in our Church. Only when we face our most difficult experiences, will we see the shining star of God's righteousness, perseverance and faith in overcoming all sorts of

obstacles or misunderstandings. To achieve this, we need a little time and patience so we can become better acquainted and get used to each other.     My dear Parishioners, today as your new parish priest, of the Descent of the Holy Spirit Sobor, I served this Holy Liturgy at the Holy Alter and spoke my sermon. On the one hand my coming to your parish, without my and your consent, could not happen. However, on the other hand Jesus Christ said: " Without me, you can not to do anything". It would not have been possible that I and my Dobrodijka Eugenia (who is now visiting her parents and family in Poland, the country of our birth) come to work with you in your parish community without the will of God and the discernment of the Consistory. Therefore, we are hoping for a friendly and successful collaboration with all of you - that we all see and rejoice in the fruits of our sacrificial work in our church and community, for the glory of God and for our parish.     With complete peace of mind and soul, I take my pastoral duties in your community of Descent of the Holy Spirit Sobor in Regina. In time of joy, grief and patience let us stand under the protective cloak of the Holy Spirit so that God gives us a unity of opinion in the Holy Church, to keep our faith, mother tongue and beautiful culture of the Ukrainian people.     During Holy Liturgy I will pray with all the strength that I have, for you all, and for spiritual unity of our parish.      Dear brothers and sisters, in finishing my words today, I share with you this apostolic attitude: "Finally brethren, that which is true, just, pure, fair - it is righteous to think about these things. Rejoice, be happy, live peacefully, then the God of peace and love will be with you now and ever and forever.

Memory Eternal to all (10,000 plus) who died in the conflict in Ukraine these past weeks and months.

SAINTSThe seven holy Maccabee martyrs Abim, Antonius, Gurias, Eleazar, Eusebonus, Alimus and Marcellus, their mother Solomonia and their teacher Eleazar suffered in the year 166 before Christ under the impious Syrian king Antiochus IV Epiphanes. This foolish ruler loved pagan and Hellenistic customs, and held Jewish customs in contempt. He did everything possible to turn people from the Law of Moses and from their covenant with God. He desecrated the Temple of the Lord, placed a statue of the pagan god Zeus there, and forced the Jews to worship it. Many people abandoned the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but there were also those who continued to believe that the Savior would come.A ninety-year-old elder, the scribe and teacher Eleazar, was brought to trial for his faithfulness to the Mosaic Law. He suffered tortures and died at Jerusalem. The disciples of St Eleazar, the seven Maccabee brothers and their mother Solomonia, also displayed great courage. They were brought to trial in Antioch by King Antiochus Epiphanes. They fearlessly acknowledged themselves as followers of the True God, and refused to eat pig’s flesh, which was forbidden by the Law.The eldest brother acted as spokesmen for the rest, saying that they preferred to die rather than break the Law. He was subjected to fierce tortures in sight of his brothers and their mother. His tongue was cut out, he was scalped, and his hands and feet were cut off. Then a cauldron and a large frying pan were heated, and the first brother was thrown into the frying pan, and he died. The next five brothers were tortured one after the other. The seventh and youngest brother was the last one left alive. Antiochus suggested to St Solomonia to persuade the boy to obey him, so that her last son at least would be spared. Instead, the brave mother told him to imitate the courage of his brothers. The child upbraided the king and was tortured even more cruelly than his brothers had been. After all her seven children had died, St Solomonia, stood over their bodies, raised up her hands in prayer to God and died. The martyric death of the Maccabee brothers inspired Judas Maccabeus, and he led a revolt against Antiochus Epiphanes. With God’s help, he gained the victory, and then purified the Temple at Jerusalem. He also threw down the altars which the pagans had set up in the streets. All these events are related in the Second Book of Maccabees (Ch. 8-10).Various Fathers of the Church preached sermons on the seven Maccabees, including St Cyprian of Carthage, St Ambrose of Milan, St Gregory Nazianzus and St John Chrysostom.

До євреїв 11:33-12:2Ukrainian Bible (UKR)33 що вірою царства побивали, правду чинили, одержували обітниці, пащі левам загороджували,34 силу огненну гасили, утікали від вістря меча, зміцнялись від слабости, хоробрі були на війні, обертали в розтіч полки чужоземців;

Page 7: Bulletinuocregina.ca/Documentation/SSBulletin 2016 08 14.doc.docx · Web viewParish Bulletin for the week of august 14, 2016 8-

Lesson from the First Book of Corinthians - 1 Corinthians 1:10-24New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)10 Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. 12 What I mean is that each of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” 13 Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God[c] that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power.18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written,“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,    and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, 23 but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Hebrews 11:33-12:2New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. 35 Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, refusing to accept release, in order to

Page 8: Bulletinuocregina.ca/Documentation/SSBulletin 2016 08 14.doc.docx · Web viewParish Bulletin for the week of august 14, 2016 8-

obtain a better resurrection. 36 Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned to death, they were sawn in two, they were killed by the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, persecuted, tormented— 38 of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground.39 Yet all these, though they were commended for their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40 since God had provided something better so that they would not, apart from us, be made perfect.12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of[c] the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

Page 9: Bulletinuocregina.ca/Documentation/SSBulletin 2016 08 14.doc.docx · Web viewParish Bulletin for the week of august 14, 2016 8-

Page 10: Bulletinuocregina.ca/Documentation/SSBulletin 2016 08 14.doc.docx · Web viewParish Bulletin for the week of august 14, 2016 8-

Saint Matthew 14:14-22New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)14 When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 15 When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16 Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” 17 They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” 18 And he said, “Bring them here to me.”19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

John 19:6-11; 13-20; 25-28; 30-35New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)6 When the chief priests and the police saw him, they shouted, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him; I find no case against him.” 7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has claimed to be the Son of God.”8 Now when Pilate heard this, he was more afraid than ever. 9 He entered his headquarters[a] again and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 Pilate therefore said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside and sat on the judge’s bench at a place called The Stone Pavement, or in Hebrew Gabbatha. 14 Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover; and it was about noon. He said to the Jews, “Here is your

King!” 15 They cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate asked them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but the emperor.” 16 Then he handed him over to them to be crucifiedSo they took Jesus; 17 and carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus between them. 19 Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. .

25 And that is what the soldiers did.Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.28 After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), “I am thirsty.”

30 When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.31 Since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the sabbath, especially because that sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.35 (He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth.)

Matthew 10:32-36; 11:1New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)32 “Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; 33 but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;36 and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household.

11 Now when Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and proclaim his message in their cities.

SERMON - 8th Sunday after Pentecost     It would be difficult to overstate the importance of this morning's Gospel in the scheme of the Orthodox Sunday Lectionary. Of all the signs and wonders that Jesus performed, it is this Feeding Miracle alone that is recorded by all four Evangelists. Moreover, both St. Matthew and St. Mark record still a second miraculous feeding. Clearly, the Holy Evangelists in concert are directing our attention to what is proclaimed as a keystone Gospel Lesson in our Christian lives. The Feeding of the Five Thousand is a cornerstone Gospel event, a foundation both for understanding liturgy as well as celebrating Scriptures.     The New Testament lessons are always careful to show how Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all the Old Testament expectations, both in the Law and the Prophets. Through Moses God fed the children of Israel in the wilderness with manna, the bread from heaven. Jesus reveals that the Old Testament miracle is a shadow of Himself, now brought to light. He Himself is both the Bread from Heaven and the Giver of the Bread.     All four Evangelists record the Miracle of the Multiplication of the Loaves because they, together with their fellow-Christians of the Early Church, saw in this feeding an anticipation of the Holy Eucharist. This feeding miracle directs our attention to the words of our Lord, as He repeatedly speaks to us of the salvation He is bringing as Bread. In the Old Testament, "bread" is consistently used as the symbol of salvation, truth and life. And so Jesus says as He is about to give Himself up for our salvation: "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me". This fulfills the revelation of Himself when Jesus explains the meaning of the feeding of the five thousand, saying: "I am the Living Bread which came down from Heaven". Christ is the Bread of Salvation, the Way, the Truth and the Life. "If anyone eats of this Bread, he will live forever; and the Bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world". He Who was born in Bethlehem"s manger (Bethlehem means "House of Bread") is the Food of Life Everlasting.     It is in the breaking of bread in Emmaus and in breaking bread by the Sea of Galilee that our Lord Jesus revealed Himself to His Disciples after His Resurrection. It is not in the Scriptures, but in the Breaking of Bread that Christ appears and is known, Himself explaining the meaning of the Scriptures. Repeatedly, bread is given to us as a sign of Christ"s Presence; in the Artos of the Holy Paschal Bright Week, the breaking on the Kolach, in the simple piety we were taught as children for bread at the family table.    Every simple act of eating together as family, as friends gathered in Christian fellowship, anticipates the Holy Eucharist and the appearance of the Resurrected Christ. This is at the heart of the inner meaning of this morning's Gospel. Christians breaking bread together partake of the "hidden manna" of which Christ speaks in the Book of Revelation. Indeed, pious Christians would keep an extra place set at their table for family feasts; for Christ says: "Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to dine with him, and he with Me".     This is what Jesus Christ our Lord does for us in the multiplication of the loaves. But He also commands us to do something in this morning's Gospel. The multitude followed Christ into the wilderness to hear His preaching and receive His healing; now it was late, and they were hungry. The Disciples wanted to send them away so that they could find something to eat. Christ places the burden of finding something to eat upon His Disciples. He does not permit them to send the hungry crowed who had followed Him empty away. They would have to collect an offering for Christ to bless and multiply.

What would have happened if the Disciples took no collection, or if those who had the five loaves and two fish were unwilling to share them? One shudders to think of how we can prevent miracles from happening by sending people away rather than asking them to stay, and offer what little they have so that Christ can bless their offering and multiply it for the nourishment of all, with plenty left over. And this is the meaning of the twelve baskets full left over; that there was more than enough without skimping, one basket for each of the Twelve Disciples, each entrusted in turn to share the blessed abundance coming from Christ, and from them, still to others.     Finally, you see, the "Litya" tell us that the blessing of the bread, wheat, wine and oil in remembrance of the multiplication of the loaves is meant not just to sustain us to stay on for the Feast Day Vigil. Can you see that out of the abundance of what we receive we must share with those who are still "outside"? There is a marvellous sermon from St. John Chrysostom telling us how sacred indeed is every human alter set up in every street and crossroad. We must be that human alter from which the hungry are fed and the infirm are healed and the good news of salvation is preached. Let your self-giving be the human alter from which Christ offers Himself for each and all.   Amen
