SAND BANDING
Sand banding is the ideal secondary drainage system, designed to work with existing lateral
drains. Sand banding provides rapid surface drainage and is a practical solution for areas
prone to waterlogging. Our machines create slitsat 250 mm centres, 140-200 mm deep, 10-15 mm
wide, which are then filled to the surface with sand. Advantages of sand banding include there being very
little growing in time required and pitches can beplayed on quickly.
Machinery Available:
Blec Sandmaster - The machine is 1.5 m wide, slits are cut by a rotary decompactor,
blades set a 25 cm spacings and cutting15 mm slots at a maximum depth of 20 cm.
Thus the ground is compacted prior to the injection of drainage material, and ridging
does not occur. Suitable for the applicationof moist sand, leica and 2-6 mm grit.
Blec Vibra Sand Injector - The machine is 1 mwide, slits are cut by discs at 25 cm centres to a
maximum depth of 14 cm, 20 mm wide. The Sand Injector will handle moist sand, leica and 2-6 mm grit.
WIZZ WHEELING
The Wizz Wheel system was specifically designed to prolong the life of compacted, waterlogged golf greens for 10-years or more without the need for reconstruction. A
cost effective alternative to other remedial drainage work, it enables the character of existing greens, often built up over decades, to be preserved. Instead of material being
added to the green, soil is taken away and replaced with 6 mm aggregate (Lytag) – slits are then connected to an existing drain, or ALS will construct drainage to a suitable outfall.
Benefits of wizz wheeling are:
Reduced use of temporary greens throughwaterlogging
Improvement in greens soil structure
Better playing conditions
Improved root development
Earlier spring growth and reduceddisease susceptibility

TURF DISEASE CONTROL
Turf diseases commonly occur when turf is under stress. Diseases can have many effects
on turf, whether it’s through visual appearance, playability or lack of wear tolerance. For
outbreaks of disease, fungicides are usually the quickest and most effective methods. Applying a
curative fungicide can help prevent further spread and reduce existing symptoms to get the disease
under control.
We offer a special 24 hour emergency response service for outbreaks of disease,
please call 01952 898518 or 01952 898519.

MOSS CONTROL
Moss can be a problem within turf and the appearance of hard surfaces, such as pathways
and tennis courts, can be compromised by mosses. These two areas need to be considered
separately, ALS Contracts can advise and apply effective solutions, on both.
MOSS ON HARD SURFACES
Moss on hard surfaces can be unsightly as well as slippery and unsafe. We have a variety of tried and tested
products available that will not stain or mark areas to get your moss problem under control.
MOSS IN TURF
Moss becomes abundant in anaerobic situations where the grass is not growing vigorously. Our contracts team can tackle moss as
part of a spring or autumn renovation programme or as a one off treatment. However, we do recommend that areas previously suffering
with moss are maintained regularly and, for severe infestations,an investigation is undertaken to discover the exact cause.
PLANT AND GROWTH REGULATORS
Plant Growth Regulators are widely applied on sports turf. They have also become a more frequently used solution for areas that are difficult to mow or
access, such as perimeters, embankments, bund walls and tree bases. There are many benefits to applying plant growth regulators to turf areas, the obvious
being the reduction in mowing frequency. Growth regulators also divert plant growth downwards into the root system, increasing food reserves and lateral stem
development. This produces a thicker, healthier sward that is better equipped to deal with temperature extremes, moisture loss, traffic, wear and tear. With our expertise in
this area, you can save time and money on maintenance and improve standards.

AQUATIC WEED CONTROLAquatic situations are complex because of
the variety of habitats and the implications ofpesticide use around water. There are explicit
guidelines, although these are under constantreview mainly because of the Water Framework
Directive.
The Water Framework Directive is legislation that has been created at European level and has been approved
by all Member States and is currently being implemented by the UK Government. It means that the Environment
Agency reviews the impact of all materials on water systems on a catchment basis. A number of herbicides are currently
under review to ascertain if they are being found within the water systems after being used for aquatic weed
control situations.
How does this impact aquatic weed control situations?
Over the last decade a significant proportion of widely used aquatic pesticides have lost their approval for use. Within an aquatic system,
we relied upon Dichlobenil granules (Embargo G and Casaron G). These would sink to the bottom of the pond and control the plants in
situ. However, this chemical was found within water that was sampled and therefore, quite correctly, was removed from the list of approved products.
There is an important distinction to make between plants that emerge from the water, or are floating on the water and can be controlled with the use of
Glyphosate with the specific written approval of the Environment Agency.
Therefore, the types of weeds that can’t currently be controlled with herbicides are, for example, Canadian Pondweed (Elodea Canadensis). Alternative strategies are
required to manage these type of situations. Whereas the type of plants that can be controlled are Water Lillies, Floating Pennywort and Parrot’s Feather.
Working closely with leading herbicide manufacturers and monitoring and implementing best cultural and chemical practices, ALS Contracts can be consulted
on all aspects of aquatic weed control.

BIOLOGICAL PEST CONTROL
Leatherjackets and Chafer Grubs can cause serious damage to turf whether it be through
feeding on roots of the turf plant, or secondary damage caused by birds and other animals
digging them out as a food source causing disruption and damage to carefully prepared
playing surfaces.
We have over 25 years experience in turf pest control dealing with major and minor infestations. We have
the knowledge and expertise to diagnose the problem, discuss treatment options and eradicate your infestation
in the safest, quickest, cost effective and environmentally responsible manner.
However, the loss of several insecticides has lead to difficulties in finding effective methods for controlling these turf pests.
Since 2011 we have been regularly undertaking field scale applications of nematodes as an approved biological control
method within the UK for treating Leatherjacket and Chafer Grub infestations within turf.
Nematodes are microscopic worms, naturally occurring in soils. The nematodes seek out the Leatherjackets or Chafer Grubs and attack
them by entering natural body openings. Once inside, they release bacteria that stops the pest from feeding, quickly killing them. They do
not stop there: the nematodes reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of hungry, infective nematodes, which disperse and search
for further prey.
Case Study: Asburnham Golf Course - Carmarthenshire
Ashburnham Golf Course had been experiencing problems with Chafer Grubs since the beginning of 2011 – Paul Hopkins, the Head Greenkeeper, returned from
holiday to discover a sight that he’d been dreading. They had experienced damage in the previous two years in the rough areas of the course; however this was the first
year that the problem had moved out onto the fairways. In previous years it had simply been a matter of repairing the damage caused by predators seeking an easy lunch. At
one stage 48 magpies were dispatched over a 6 day period. This approach didn’t resolve the problem leading Huw Morgan, the Golf Club Manager to conclude that he had to tackle
Chafer Grubs, the food source of the predators.
In the early hours of a September morning ALS arrived on site with 100 x 500 g trays, each containing 250,000,000 nematodes. The nematodes were applied at a water
volume rate of 2000 litres/hectare in conjunction with a wetting agent. This ensured that sufficient numbers of nematodes came into
contact with the Chafers. Spraying over 15 hectares of the course required the ALS Contracts team to use two specialist rigs. The
operatives started at 6.30am and completed the task early, without impacting an event later that day.
With such wonderful firm fescue greens in such a beautiful location, to have the course damaged by an agent outside of
their control was an exasperating time for Huw and his team.
Chafer Grub populations were controlled thanks to some inventive thinking, careful timing and the support of ALS
Contracts. The latest update (spring 2016) from Huw is he has had no further infestations or damage since ALS Contracts
applied nematodes 5 years ago.

SPECIALIST WEED CONTROL
ALS Contract Services can take care
of all aspects of weed control. We have
extensive knowledge and expertise to
control the more problematic weeds such
as Japanese Knotweed, Brambles, Giant
Hogweed, Ivy, Himalayan Balsam
and Ragwort.
Customers benefit from our professional service
ensuring the right herbicide is used, at the right
time, in the correct conditions, to provide
optimum results .
JAPANESE KNOTWEED
Important Information on Japanese Knotweed
Japanese Knotweed has been added to Schedule 9 of The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (Variation of Schedule 9)
(England and Wales) Order 2010: under this act it is illegal toplant or otherwise cause to grow Japanese Knotweed.
Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica) is an invasive, non-nativespecies that was introduced into the UK by botanists at the end of
the Victorian era.
All Japanese Knotweed plants within the UK are female and all male plants are shown to be infertile hybrids. Japanese Knotweed has an incredible capacity
to spread: as little as a 10 mm², 0.7 gm section of rhizome has the capacity to produce a whole new plant. The plant spreads vegetatively from stems, crown and
rhizomes and has spread throughout the entire UK since its arrival here in 1854.
ControlChemical control is often the most cost-effective means of controlling Japanese
Knotweed and involves applying a professional herbicide over a period up to three years depending upon the infestation. It is advisable to monitor sites of Knotweed
infestations for longer, to ensure all areas have been treated and there has been no recolonisation from adjacent sites.
ALS Contracts consider all environmental aspects ofcontrol, including the proximity of water and the
need to liaise with the Environment Agency.
We are trained and experienced in Stem Injection,a labour intensive practice that minimises
herbicide coming into contact with other plants.
With qualified botanists in our team, ALS Contracts will advise the best treatment method available
and apply in optimum conditions and at the timeof the year the Knotweed plant will best respond
to the chosen method of control.
For any enquiries regarding Japanese Knotweed Control contact our team on 01952 259281or email [email protected] 15
GIANT HOGWEED
Important Information on Giant Hogweed
Giant Hogweed has been added to Schedule 9 by The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
(Variation of Schedule 9) (England and Wales) Order 2010: this means that it is illegal to plant or
otherwise cause to grow Giant Hogweed in the wild.
Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) is a member of the Apiacaea family; also known as Cartwheel
Flower because of the extremely large flower heads. As a non-native species it does not have any natural predators that
would normally control its population and as a consequenceit has naturalised along watercourses, roadsides, hedgerows,
waste places and rough grassland.
Giant Hogweed is highly invasive, but more concerning are its ability to inflict serious injury and even blind people that come
into contact with the plant. The sap of Giant Hogweed contains a toxic chemical which sensitises the skin and leads to severe blistering when
exposed to sunlight. The burns can last for several months and even once they have died down the skin can remain sensitive to light
for many years.
ControlGiant Hogweed is susceptible to systemic herbicides. The benefit of spraying
with a selective herbicide is that grasses that are present will not be affected and can happily recolonise the area occupied by the Giant Hogweed once it
has died.
ALS Contracts possess long-lance sprayers to accurately apply herbicide to plants growing in difficult to access infestations along river banks either by a
spot treatment to individual plants, using hand-held equipment, or by overall spray using machine-mounted spray booms. In the latter instance, total weed control of all
vegetation will occur and it may be necessary to reseed the treated area with grass and other native plants. Establishing a good sward of grasses soon after treatment of the
weed will help to reduce the rate of recolonisation of the area by seeds of Giant Hogweed.
We are also trained and experienced in applying herbicide through stem injection equipment. Sites with infestation of Giant Hogweed will need to be monitored annually
for 5-10 years after treatment, and re-treated as necessary to take account of newlyemerged seedlings.
ALS Contracts can advise and will work with you to gain specific approval for application offthe Environment Agency and undertake an effective programme of Giant Hogweed control.
COMMON HORSETAIL (MARESTAIL) Horsetail (Equisetum arvense, L.) is also commonly mistakenly referred to as Mare’s-tail, (Hippuris
vulgaris), which is actually a completely different plant although it looks similar. The sterile stems that are seen through the growing season are what are readily recognised as Common Horsetail. The fertile
stems look quite distinct, off-white, 10–25 cm tall and 3–5 mm diameter, with brown scale leaves, and an apical brown spore cone.
ControlChemical control is often the most common and cost-effective method for controlling Common Horsetail.
Anyone who has attempted to control this notorious plant will understand how difficult it is, so ensuring theright herbicide is applied is essential.
HIMALAYAN BALSAM
Important Information on Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan Balsam has been added toSchedule 9 by The Wildlife and Countryside
Act 1981 (Variation of Schedule 9) (England and Wales) Order 2010: this means that it is illegal to
plant or otherwise cause to grow HimalayanBalsam in the wild.
Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera.) is not a native species to the UK originating, as the name implies, in the
Himalayas. Himalayan Balsam is the tallest annual plant in the UK growing up to 3 metres in height a year. It has highly
visible pink flowers on fleshy hollow stems that are green in the spring but become red as the year progresses. It grows
very rapidly which necessitates readily available access to soil moisture which is why it has colonised river banks. This causes a
problem because Himalayan Balsam does not have an extensiveroot system and it is crowding out perennial plants that bind the
river banks with their root systems.
ControlHimalayan Balsam tends to grow near water and therefore the selection
of an appropriate herbicide is limited. Guidance notes for the use of herbicides in or near water have been published by the Environment
Agency.
Controlling Himalyan Balsam at the right plant growth stage is fundamental to success. We have the expertise and skills to help you tackle troublesome
infestations.
RAGWORT
Important Information on Ragwort WeedsThe Weeds Act of 1959 provides for orders for the control of Common Ragwort
(Senecio jacobaea, L.), this was updated by the Ragwort Control Act of 2003.
Common Ragwort is widespread throughout the UK and can be found on wasteland, development land, roadside verges,
railway land, amenity land, conservation areas, set-aside, woodland and grazing land. The tall nodding heads of
yellow flowers are composed of yellow disc and ray flowers, whilst the stems are tough and often tinged
red/purple near the base. Flowering is between June and October, after which the plant dies.
Common Ragwort can be a problem forlivestock, particularly horses.
ControlALS Contracts can apply herbicide to plant rosettes
in the spring and in the autumn before frost damages the foliage.

“ ALS were recommended to me after another contractor let us down. The team completed a full end of season renovation at The Valley and I couldn’t be happier. Their communication was fantastic and they did everything they could to get the job done as quickly as possible. The quality of work was brilliant. I can’t praise them enough. I will definitely be using them again. ”
Nathan Chapman, Head Groundsman at The Valley, Charlton Athletic Football Club
“ I have used ALS Contracts at the rugby club since 2007. We have 4 pitches at the ground and every year we get 2 pitches sand banded, and 2 pitches verti-drained. The team are brilliant and very friendly, they turn up exactly when they say will and complete all work within the specified time. The ALS Contracts team provide a very professional service and I couldn’t manage without them. I look forward to their visit at the end of every season. ”Eric Curtis, Groundsman at Buckingham Rugby Club
“ Having a company who genuinely cares about the club is important. We find the communication and advice we receive is excellent and they feel like a local company. They disc seeded the new ground, keeping an eye on the weather, waiting for the optimum time to seed, ensuring the ground would be ready for the new season. Nothing is too much trouble. ”Nick Husbands, Chairman at Bromsgrove Cricket Club

“ ALS Contracts were recommended to us and I’ve got to say I’m glad they were. The team were very efficient and cheerful, even under difficult conditions, as our green proved very awkward to get the machinery into place. I am very happy with the end results, they did a very thorough job and I will certainly use them again. ”Graham Spencer, Treasurer at Corley Bowling Club
