2015-16 Season Outlook with Coach SpecketerWomen’s basketball has begun, so we got together with head coach Betsy Specketer to see how the team is shaping up . How are you guys shaping up?

“It’s actually been a little bit of a slow start, mostly due to having only three returners and 10 new players,” said coach Specketer . “We’ve done some team bonding things, individual skill work, conditioning, and thrown in some system work as well . That’s a lot for so many new players to grasp in such a short amount of time . We’re showing improvement though and as we get further into October, I think we’ll start to see them really gel as a team .” What are you expecting from the group?

“As far as my expectations, those never change from one year to the next,” coach said . “I expect us to compete for a SWAC title and on a national level, be recognized as one of the best teams in the country . I think this team has the potential to meet those expectations and hopefully be playing their best basketball when it matters in March .” Things from last year which we are improving on…

“Last year’s group had a really good year,” Specketer said . “It’s hard to improve upon 27-7, a repeat SWAC title, and a Sweet 16 national finish. We had a rough March though in losing Clarissa & Cassidy for the National tour-nament, so I’m hoping this team can stay healthy through the years end . If so, I think this group has the talent, the balance, and the position depth to have an even bigger year .” What can fans expect at the games?

“SLCC fans are the best!! For sure they can count on this group to compete every night, and in particular, protect their home floor,” she said. “They’re a really athletic group, who can run and get to the rim, so I think we’ll see a little more up tempo play from them, which should be fun for our fans .” The Bruins will face their first opponent on Oct. 30 at the Snow College Tournament. Their first home match up with be against Gillette College on November 25 at 5:30 p.m. Please keep an eye on slccbruins.com for all of your up to date Bruin basketball information .

Head Coach Betsy Specketer

Head Coach Betsy Specketer enters her 20th season at the helm of the SLCC Women’s Basketball program .

Last season, Coach Specketer led the Bruins to an impres-sive 27-7 overall record with a Scenic West Athletic Confer-ence (SWAC) record of 13-2 . During the 2014-15 regular season, Specketer and the Bruins earned a first place SWAC finish and the top seed for the Region 18 Basketball Champi-onships in Ephraim, Utah. With a Region 18 Runner-up finish, SLCC earned an at large bid to the NJCAA National Tourna-ment where Specketer led the Bruins all the way to the Sweet 16 and finished at No. 9 in the final NJCAA polls.

In addition to one of the most successful seasons in SLCC Women’s Basketball history, Coach Specketer placed two players on the All-Region 18 list with two First Team mem-bers Cassidy Whitney and Raushan Gultekin . Both Bruins where names NJCAA All-Americans . Whitney received Sec-ond Team honors, while Gultekin was named Third Team All-American . Coach Specketer was also named SWAC Coach of the Year having and incredible 432-176 win-loss record . However, despite the multiple awards and accolades, Betsy remains steadfast in her ultimate goal—to bring an NJCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship home to SLCC .

Specketer firmly believes in ‘doing things the right way’ and with that philosophy has moved at least 65 of her players on to compete and study at four-year institutions during her tenure . She takes great pride in helping her players achieve their dreams both on the hardwood and in the classroom .

Assistant Coach Marcilina Grayer

Assistant Coach Marcilina Grayer enters her third season on the SLCC coaching staff . A former SLCC Women’s Basketball player herself, Coach Grayer brings a wealth of experience with her in returning to the program . She has also taken on the role of Eligibility Coordinator for the department .

Mostly working with the Bruin post players, Grayer played a huge role in helping SLCC land a First Team All-Region 18 and Player of the Year pick in sophomore Cassidy Whitney . Because of her efforts, Marcilina helped lead SLCC to a 27-7 overall record and 13-2 Scenic West Athletic Confer-ence (SWAC) record, leading to winning the SWAC championship and a NJCAA National Tournament at large berth where the Bruins advanced to the Sweet 16 .

Prior to coming back to SLCC, Grayer spent a full season as an as-sistant coach at Feather River College (FRC) and was in charge of the

strength and conditioning program for the Golden Eagles . While at FRC, Grayer was also the head coach of the track and field program.

She helped lead the Golden Eagles Women’s Basketball squad to its best record in ten years under FRC Head Coach Haley White. Kevin Dustin enters his first year as the Athletic Direc-tor (AD) of SLCC Athletics where he replaces longtime AD Norma Carr .

Officially beginning his duties as of July, 1 2014, Dustin steps into the position at a perfect time as all five SLCC athletic programs are coming off highly successful seasons both on and off the field.

two years as an assistant men’s basketball coach, seven years as Associate Athlet-ics Director of External Operations, and four years as Associate Athletics Director of Development .

Dustin began his career as an English teacher and men’s basketball coach at Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah. Leading the Bobcats to the state championship in 1994, he was named the Utah 4A Coach of the Year .

A native of Logan, Utah, Dustin graduated from Utah State University with his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1983 and his master’s degree in education in 2000. Married to wife Danene, they are the proud parents of five grown children.
