DIVERSITY & MULTICULTURAL INITIATIVES
American Advertising Federation-Houston: Diversity & Multicultural Initiatives
-1-
DIVERSITY & MULTICULTURAL INITIATIVES
Diversity is a priority for AAF-Houston leadership and members in a market in which the majority of all residents
are non-Caucasian. Approximately 20% of AAF-Houston members are ethnic. Event attendance averages 15%
ethnic, and AAF-Houston leadership has been 10-20% ethnic over the past six years.
• In addition, Board Composition for the AAF-Houston (excluding the Executive Committee) is 50% White
Males, 5% African-Americans, 10% Hispanics, and 35% Females.
• AAF-Houston Executive Committee includes: Chairman White Female, Chairman Elect White Female, Vice
Chairman White Male, Immediate Past Chairman White Male, Presidents Council Chair Hispanic Male,
Treasurer White Male, and Secretary White Female (Ex. 3A).
DEVELOPMENT OF MULTICULTURAL PROGRAMS
Activities in the Houston Market
Objective and Target Audiences: AAF-Houston programs promote multiculturalism using aggressive
acknowledgement, inclusivity and awareness strategies. These programs and events aim to attract not only members
and prospective members, but also the greater Houston advertising, marketing, media, production and corporate
business communities. These activities highlight the value of multiculturalism in advertising and allow the club to
increase funding for education and scholarships. AAF-Houston also sponsors many educational programs aimed at
attracting multicultural students to advertising careers and assisting them in their career endeavors (Ex. 1A – 1B).
DIVERSITY – OUR COMMON BOND
Overview: At AAF-Houston we view diversity as a core strength and are committed to its inclusion in all aspects of
Club affairs, i.e., recruitment, website, events, contractors, community involvement, professional development and

scholarships. The diversity of our backgrounds gives us the range of expertise needed to tackle our goals and the
needs of our stakeholders. Committee objectives have been adapted from the AAF Mosaic Center on
Multiculturalism.
Budget: Zero-based, supplemented by sponsorships and in-kind donations
WHY DIVERSITY IS IMPORTANT
• Houston is now the most ethnically diverse major metropolitan area in the entire United States, according to the
latest report from the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University. (Ex. 1B)
• According to the analysis, the percentage of metropolitan area residents who are Anglo dropped to 40% by 2010,
down from almost 58% in 1990. Anglos make up 49% of the population in New York. (Ex. 1B)
• The percentage of Latinos in the Houston area increased to about 40% by 2010, up from 20% in 1990. (Ex. 1B)
• The percentage of Asians has more than doubled over the past 20 years to 7%, up from 3% in 1990. (Ex. 1B)
• The percentage of African-Americans has barely budged, 17% in 2010, down from 18% in 1990. (Ex. 1B)
• Houston ranks 5th in the U.S. for Highest Percent of Metro Population Foreign-Born (Brookings Institute). (Ex.
1C)
Participation
Objective and Target Audience: Work with selected AAF-Houston committees (such as membership, programs,
nominating, education and scholarship) to encourage diversity in not only the committees, but also in program
speakers, educational workshops and seminar topics.
Results Achieved: Diversity Committee members met with the board during the strategic planning session for the
year to reinforce our mission for greater diversity in all aspects, i.e. membership, advertising education, club
management, and communications. Results have been effective in that scholarship applicants and recipients are more
diverse than ever. This year, minorities and women in the Houston advertising and communications industry who
have never been part of AAF-Houston are being directly courted by both the diversity committee and the
membership committee to become involved. AAF-Houston’s array of education programs is aggressively including
students from all schools, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (Ex. 2D). The Diversity Committee

has surveyed the membership for candidates for awards like the AAF Silver Medal (Ex. 7A – 7B) and AAF-Houston
Trailblazer Award Over (Ex. 6C) the last three years we honored a Hispanic male and two female entrepreneurs with
these distinguished awards. The Trailblazer Award honored its first woman recipient in 2012 (Ex. 6C).
EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS
Objective and Target Audience: AAF-Houston aims to promote advertising as a career choice to multicultural
students of all ages and to attract a diverse pool of university students to apply for the AAF-Houston/Advertising
Education Foundation of Houston (AEFH) scholarship and internship programs (Ex. 2A – 2F). Advertising is also
promoted as a career choice to multicultural students of all ages.
Results Achieved: In April, AAF-Houston and the AEFH awarded 25 scholarships totaling $50,000 (up from
$40,000 last year) to students in advertising from universities throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas.
Twenty-one scholarships were awarded to women and ten to people of color (Ex. 2B – 2D). Exceptional efforts were
made to reach students of all cultural backgrounds. Students were recognized for their academic performance,
interest in the advertising profession, desire to work in the Houston market, financial need, leadership, and their
essays.
The AEFH administers the Lopez Negrete Hispanic Marketing Education Fund that is devoted to Hispanic
advertising students and endowed by AAF-Houston members Alex and Cathy Lopez Negrete (Ex. 2D). The
Gilbreath Communications Scholarship, endowed by AAF-Houston member Audrey Gilbreath, is dedicated to
students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) (Ex. 2D).
CLUB LEADERSHIP AND MEMBERSHIP COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Objective and Target Audience: Houston’s focus on multiculturalism has created an opportunity for local and
district AAF members, including current and former board members, to represent AAF-Houston in key minority
related organizations. The goal in recruiting these professionals is to ensure that AAF-Houston marketing and
advertising establish deep roots into all communities.
Results Achieved: AAF-Houston board members include: Tony Canales (Hispanic/Diversity chair/ President and
General Manager of KTMD-TV47 Telemundo/NBC, Board Member of Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce),

Locke Bryan Productions (LBP), is credited with building the company from a boutique operation to a
production powerhouse. Through her efforts, LBP has endowed an AEFH Director’s scholarship (Ex. 2D & 3B).

Acme Fish Creative Boutique and is a past chairman of Only in Houston (OiH). For several years, Lou has been
working with a client and friend with neurofibromatosis (NF) and a heart of gold. Lou works tirelessly to help
raise awareness of NF, needed research, and related ADA issues. Fundraising generates support for the Just Ask!
Foundation to provide resources and an online community of support. Their mission is to spread awareness of
NF and inspire others whose lives are impacted by NF to start living fuller, more rewarding lives (Ex. 3B).
• Audrey Gilbreath, 2016 AAF Silver Medal Winner, has the distinction of being the first woman and the first

of Selectors of the American Institute of Public Service. He is Chairman Emeritus of the Houston Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce, and was named as Agency Executive of the Year by HispanicAd.com (Ex. 2D & 3B).
• Ann Iverson, AAF Silver Medal winner, AAF-Houston Past Chairman, entrepreneur, and is affiliated with Rice
University. Ann is a board member of the Tenth District Foundation for Advertising Education and monitors
proposed legislation and policy changes that could impact the industry (Ex. 3B & 6A).
• Cesar Rincon is an AAF-Houston past board member, with a background in Hispanic TV and radio, and
member of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Cesar is also a board member of Camara de
Empresarios Latinos de Houston. CELH is part of the Houston Mayor’s Office of Trade and International
Development and one of the most active business advocates in the city. CELH promotes Hispanic
entrepreneurship and educational initiatives (Ex. 3B).
CONDUCTING PROGRAMS THAT EDUCATE AND MOTIVATE MULTICULTURAL STUDENTS TO PURSUE CAREERS IN ADVERTISING Objectives and Target Audience: Attracting minority college students in the greater Houston area and throughout
the Tenth District to participate in the annual AAF-Houston Student Conference and to apply for AAF-Houston
scholarships and the internships. This program helps us reach high school and middle school women and minority
students to foster interest in Advertising as a career at a younger age.
Results Achieved: Minority participation in this year’s AAF-Houston Annual Student Conference continued to
grow both in terms of participants and in the expansion of minority hosts for the student teams, this year including
minority-advertising agencies.
• This year we had over 180 students attend from 15 universities and of those we had 48% women and 44%
minority students. This was a 4% increase over the previous year’s program.
American Advertising Federation Houston – Diversity and Multicultural Initiatives

• This conference is the largest hands-on experience of its kind in the country and is effectively transitioning
students into the real world of advertising. Students who attend the conference are better prepared to launch their
careers, according to employers, students and instructors (Ex. 4A).
• We took a proactive approach in courting historically black colleges, Texas Southern University and Grambling,
to participate. By personally contacting the professors and department heads by phone and through e-mail (Ex.
4B), students were encouraged to complete our scholarship applications as well as our internship requests. AAF-
Houston’s goal is to strengthen its ties with Texas Southern, Grambling and other HBCU programs and initiate
their participation in other AAF-H educational and professional development programs. The AEFH awarded a
scholarship to a Grambling student in 2015 (Ex 2D) and has received an increased number of scholarship
applications from Texas Southern University for 2016.
BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS WITH MEDIA OUTLETS AND MULTICULTURAL SUPPLIERS AND VENDORS
Objective: AAF-Houston strives to maintain strong relationships with multicultural media outlets, suppliers and
vendors. Through event sponsorships, trade or in-kind sponsorships, and involvement in many AAF-Houston
educational efforts such as our internship program, AAF-Houston invites the media, suppliers and vendors into
opportunities to gain visibility in the market and within the AAF-H membership community.
Target Audience: AAF-Houston members, the advertising and communications communities in the greater Houston
market.
Results Achieved: Three of AAF-Houston’s largest Corporate Members are Telemundo Houston, Univision
Houston, and Lopez Negrete Communications. The Houston market has many multicultural media outlets, suppliers
and vendors. AAF-Houston has relationships with all the local media outlets, including, but not limited to: KTMD-
TV: Telemundo, KXLN-TV: Univision, KFTH-TV: UniMas, KLOL-FM 101.1: Clear Channel Communications and
Clear Channel Outdoor, African-American News and Issues newspaper, La Informacion Spanish newspaper, Rumbo
newspaper, El Dia and La Subasta newspapers, and Mikel Marketing online newsletter for the Asian-American
community. These multicultural media, suppliers and vendors can be found at our monthly meetings, supporting our
major events such as the Trailblazer Awards Gala and the American Advertising Awards program. Many also

support the annual Houston Media Classic Golf Tournament. Most companies sponsor one or more AAF-H
members.
ROLE MODELS AND LEADERSHIP REINFORCEMENT
Goals & Tactics: Each month we bring in national advertising and “Creative Thought Leaders” to share best
practices with our membership. Part of the annual Club goal is to ensure that 20% of our speakers are women or
minorities. This way, we can reinforce to our diverse audience that people from all colors are doing breakthrough
things to impact our industry and create opportunities for them. The club also leveraged the Trailblazer Gala and
Southwest Advertising Hall of Fame to ensure that industry-leading females were being properly recognized.
Results Achieved:
• Alex Lopez Negrete (former club chairman) and Dennis Vegas (former board member) made appearances at the
monthly speaker luncheons to offer their expertise on various topics, including: prosperity in America, keeping
up with an evolving industry, and Hispanic advertising (Ex. 6A).
• Aimee Woodall (White Female) from Houston’s Black Sheep Agency made a riveting presentation on how her
agency was transformed into one that helps non-profits market themselves in this social world. Aimee discussed
the challenges in running the business as the transformation was occurring and how she went about coaching her
staff during this evolution. It was very informative for the local agency owners and small business professionals
in attendance (Ex. 6B).
• AAF-H honored Stacey Gillman Wimbish (White Female), one of the most respected women in the auto
dealership industry across the country, at the Houston Trailblazer Gala (Ex. 6C).
• Camille Bryan (White Female) of Locke Bryan Productions, and Brenda Love (White Female) of Love
Advertising were nominated and (subsequently) inducted into the Southwest Advertising Hall of Fame (Ex. 6D).
Conclusion: We will continue to grow the club and its programs by achieving greater workplace diversity within the
Houston advertising industry; preparing the industry's future leaders; creating opportunities for minority suppliers
and general market corporations to work together to create effective advertising campaigns and programs targeted

towards multicultural markets; and establishing metrics and reporting results of the multicultural programs in
Houston’s advertising and related industries.
ENSURING THAT MULTICULTURAL TALENT IS REPRESENTED Objectives and Target Audience: With Houston being one of the most diverse and multicultural cities in the world,
AAF-H holds itself responsible for promoting creative talent and work that reflects the composition of the city. The
Houston American Advertising Awards is one platform to exhibit just that.
Results Achieved: After four months of event coordination and entry promotion, AAF-H received one of the most
impressive lineups of judges, one of the highest tallies for Non-English/Hispanic and African-American
submissions, and honored a local legend who defied the odds of being a female entrepreneur.
• Non-English work performed very well, winning: Best of Show – Broadcast, Brett Elliott Award for
Excellence in Copywriting, Special Judges’ Award for Excellence in Art Direction, 10 Gold, 10 Silver, and
12 Citations of Excellence (Ex. 7A).
• A diverse, international panel of industry veterans to judge the work: 3 Male/1 Female; from Mexico, Miami
(by way of Brazil), Chicago, and Denver (Ex. 7A).
• Audrey Gilbreath (African-American Female), CEO and Founder of Gilbreath Communications, Inc., was
chosen in 2015 to be the next AAF Silver Medal Award winner (Ex. 7A – 7B).
• Event was co-chaired by Nicole Fellers (White Female/Executive Director of AAF-H) and Candace Pittman
(African-American Female Member) (Ex. 7A & 7C).

Learning English and Leadership in Houston
Houston is America on demographic fast-forward. In the first decade of this century, the metro area’sforeign-born population grew 48 percent, compared to 28 percent for the nation as a whole. More than 42percent of Houston’s children have at least one foreign-born parent, compared with a national rate of 23percent.
Not surprisingly, Houston also has one of the highest numbers of limited English proficient (LEP) residents ofany metro in the nation, ranking 5 among large metropolitan areas. Over two-thirds of LEP residents in theregion are in the workforce, but typically earn only about $25,000 a year.
As Jill Wilson explains in her new paper, these workers, and their children, will account for almost allworkforce growth in the coming decades, not just in Houston but in the nation as a whole. Realizing howmuch depends on the success of these families, public, philanthropic, private and civic actors arecollaborating to expand access to English-language education, and thereby bolster earnings for families andcreate better outcomes for children.
Neighborhood Centers, Inc., which Bruce Katz and I have written about previously, is helping LEP residentsof the greater Houston region, including in suburbs where community self-perception and public serviceshave not always caught up with demographic realities. Neighborhood Centers is one of the largest nonprofitservice providers in the country, operating throughout the state of Texas, but its work is concentrated in
th
community centers located throughout the sprawling Houston metropolis. One of those centers is inPasadena, a once middle-class white suburb that now has a 20 percent poverty rate and is two-thirdsHispanic.
In 2006, Neighborhood Centers uncovered a huge gap in Pasadena between demand for English languageclasses and their availability (something Wilson notes is common). According to Pasadena resident RobertaLeal, who I interviewed early last year for the book The Metropolitan Revolution, “Harris County [publicschool officials] were saying, ‘We have the capacity to host the classes, we just can’t get to the people.’ Onthe other hand, Neighborhood Centers is saying ‘We have the people, we need the resources, theinstructors. Let’s meet in the middle, let’s make this happen.’” Today Neighborhood Centers coordinates asubstantial adult education and English language program in Pasadena.
This effort can provide tangible benefits to families and communities: Wilson’s paper documents an earningspremium of between 24 and 39 percent (depending on educational attainment) for English proficient workersversus LEP workers. “In some cases,” she notes, “better English proficiency is associated with more of adifference in earnings than is higher educational attainment.”
But there are also benefits that defy easy quantification. Leal, whose mother learned English at aNeighborhood Centers program in Pasadena, then taught other LEP immigrants at the same communitycenter, says that offering English language instruction sends a strong message to immigrants in particular. “Itsays we’re not upset that you came to this country and you don’t speak English. It says, we’re glad youcame here, come to our home, we can teach you something new and get you out into the community to beyour own leader.”

Networking post event.
I thought the DJ MCees were a bit lame. They seemed out of their element. After the female sort of ended the event, I thought the audience expected more since, usually, the president thanks everyone and ends the luncheon. It could have been handled better, more smoothly. Also, we need to receive these surveys much sooner since we tend to forget some of the things that happened at the event.

HMNS Background: • The Houston Museum of Natural Science is one of the nation’s most heavily attended museums.
• Annual attendance tops 2.5 million. • • The museum is over 100 years old and started with just a small display at the Houston Zoo.
• From that it has grown to four floors of permanent exhibit halls, the Wortham Giant Screen Theatre, Cockrell Butterfly Center, Burke Baker Planetarium, George Observatory and a satellite location in Sugar Land.
• It has been host to numerous blockbuster exhibitions from Kremlin Gold (the first time the Kremlin jewels had ever left Russia) to The Dead Sea Scrolls, BodyWorlds, Lord of the Rings and many more.
• The museum has over 50,000+ member households and something to delight every age group.
• In December, the museum will open an exhibition on the Virgin of Guadalupe – the first time a major exhibition on this subject matter is opening anywhere in the nation.
HMNS Background Cont….:
What is Mixers & Elixirs: • Mixers & Elixirs started over 10 years ago as a way to bring new audiences to the museum.
• Most people either visit a museum as a child (on a school field trip most likely) and then again when they have a family of their own.
• We wanted to pull in a demographic of A25-44 who are young adults and enjoy going out and meeting other like-minded people.
• So Mixers was built out of that.
• There’s always live music (usually a popular local band), cash bars, food trucks and most fun of all – an opportunity to dance under the dinosaurs, mingle in the mineral hall, meet other people and generally see the museum in a whole new light.
Objective: Increase Event Awareness and Increase Attendance
amongst target demographic
Target: A25-44 A21+
Geographical area:
Greater Houston area

Welcome to the 54th Annual American Advertising Awards, It is with great honor that we welcome everyone to this year’s Award Show. We should all be proud of the quality of work that is produced in Houston on behalf of some fabulous clients. This award has been given to Houston’s best since the early ‘60’s. For everyone that has entered it is a testament of your commitment to keeping GREAT work coming out of the Houston Advertising Community. As the material we are producing continues to evolve to the always-changing face of the consumer and the technology that they are served through, the fundamentals of the profession remain strong. A Radio commercial is now becoming an Audio ad and TV commercials are becoming Video ads, but they all must accomplish the goal in a creative and motivating manner to garner results for our clients.
Will your work win tonight? Tag #URit.
Remember, none of this would be possible without the generous support of our sponsors and the countless hours invested by our many volunteers. In gratitude, we ask that you greet them, consider them for your next project, and most of all, take a moment to personally thank them for their contributions.
Congratulations to everyone who had a hand in the body of work represented here tonight! Your efforts are worthy of praise. We hope that you enjoy your evening and leave tonight inspired and reenergized to make the most of the opportunities waiting for you during this coming year.
Thank you for being here.
Tammy Guest AAF-Houston Chair
“Think outside the box, collapse the box, and take a f#*!ing sharp knife to it.”
— Banksy, Wall and Piece
This year at the 54th American Advertising Awards Houston we celebrate creativity, and we wanted to produce a show that did just that. We aspired to have a show that was different and modern, organized and edgy, but most of all paid homage to the brilliant men and women whose work makes up this show every year.
Our city and industry is made up of thousands of men and women who think outside the box, day in and day out to create beautiful art, amazing copy, compelling branding and unforgettable advertising that draws in companies and consumers.
As the AAA committee we did what we could to make our mark and make this a great show for you. Now, we invite you to be social and colorful and pack your sharp knife!
It’s your turn to make your mark, Kill the Box! Next year will be 55 years... make it great.
