MissionStatement
TheDivisionofInformationTechnologyiscommittedtodeliveringastrategicadvantagetoRadfordUniversitybyfosteringcreativeandinnovativeuseoftechnologytoachievetheuniversity’sobjectives.Thedivisionpromoteseffectivestewardshipofinformationassetsandprovidesasecure,highlyreliabletechnologyinfrastructurealongwithhigh‐quality,customer‐orientedservicesandsupport,soastomeettheever‐changingneedsofstudents,facultyandstaff.

MissionStatement
ThemissionofElectronicEngineeringandCommunicationServices(EECS)istoprovideup‐to‐dateengineeringandtechnicalsupportforallcampuselectroniclearningspaces,campusradiostationWVRU,campuscabletelevisionsystems,satellitedownlinkfacilities,internetup‐linkingsystemsforprofessionaltelevisionbroadcastaccess,campusdigitalsignage,audio‐visual(AV)supportengineering,graduationstreamingservices,andrepairanddispositionofvariouselectronicequipment.
MajorAccomplishmentsCenterfortheSciencesTechnologyInstallation
TechnologyfortheCenterfortheSciencesbuildingwasplannedandinstalledtosupportfortheneedsoffacultyteachinginthenew,state‐of‐the‐artfacility.High‐resolutionLEDdisplayswereusedinsteadoftraditionalprojectorsinmostspacestoprovidesharperandbrighterimages.AVsystemsintegratedinthebuildingincludethelargelecturehall,19teachinglabs,2computerlabs,and4classrooms.High‐resolutionceilingmounteddocumentcameraswereinstalledtoprovidetheabilitytodisplayitemsandperformdemonstrations.Aconferenceroomwasalsooutfittedwithatelepresencesystemtoprovidevideoconferencingcapabilities.
ElectronicLearningSpaceUpgrades
ElectronicEngineeringandCommunicationServicesupgradedmorethan50electronicclassroomfacilitiesincludingtheDoctorofPhysicalTherapy(DPT)PrograminRoanoke,theRoanokeHigherEducationCenter,Walker,Young,Russell,Porterfield,andCovingtonhalls.Twenty‐nineclassroomsreceivedlaserprojectorsprovidingenhancedimagesandinstant‐onfunctionality.SoftwareandinterfaceswerechangedontheCrestroncontrolsystemsin185learningspacestoenhanceusabilityandsupport.
AVTroubleshootingguidedeveloped
AnAVtroubleshootingguidewascreatedtoenhanceandexpandsupportfortheelectroniclearningspacesoncampus.Thenewguideallowshelpdeskandotherstafftobetterassistwithsupportrequestsandexpediterepairs.

EnhancedAutomationforWVRURadioStation
Radford’sWVRUFMradiostationprovidesopportunitiesforstudentinternstolearnabouttheoperationofaradiostation.Theradiostation’sstudioautomationsystemwasupgradedtothelatestsoftwareandoperatingsystemenhancingfunctionalityandsimplifyingprogramming.Theautomationstoragesystemspacewasincreasedprovidinggreaterstorageandenhancedreliability.
Aspartoftheupgrade,SMARTWEBtechnologywasincorporatedinallaspectsoftheautomationincluding:unattended‐recording,playback,FTPdelivery,andradioprogramscheduling.Musicfilehandlingcanbeperformedthroughthewebinterface.
CampusDigitalSignageUpdates
AnupgradetotheSymondigitalsignagetechnologywascompletedtosimplifyprogrammingandaddvideoformats.Theweatherserviceapplicationwasupgradedtoprovideseamlessintegrationandadditionalgraphicscapabilities.NewchannelswereaddedtoallowbuildingspecificinformationscreensforMartinHall,CenterfortheSciences,CollegeofHumanitiesandBehavioralSciences,CenterforVisualandPerformingArts,McConnellLibrary,andKyleHall.
AudioSystemUpgrades
NewportableAVequipmentincludingdigitalmixers,digitalsnakes,XLRsplitters,microphones,speakersandcableswaspurchasedtoprovidesupportforad‐hoceventsinvenueswhereadditionalsoundreinforcementistemporarilyneeded.SoundreinforcementwasinstalledintheStudentWellnessandFitnessCenterandaShureWirelessMicrophoneSystemwasinstalledinthePetersHallGym.TheSELUBarnalsoreceivedanewCrestronAVswitchingandaudiosystemtoenhancefunctionalityformeetingsheldinthevenue.

Cardinal,theCommonwealth’snewfinancialmanagementsystem,wasintegratedwithBannerreplacingtheoldintegrationwithCARS.Radfordtechnicalandfunctionalstaffinvestedoverayearattendingtherequiredplanningandtrainingsessions,andintegratingCardinalwiththeBannersystem.Acompleterewriteofinterfaceswasrequiredtosynchronizethetwosystems.Radford’simplementationsuccessfullylaunchedonscheduleinFebruary2016.
LawRoomTitleIXTrainingforFaculty,StaffandStudentsLaunched
TheLawRoomTitleIXtrainingproductwaspurchasedtoprovidethetrainingcontent,trackingandreportingforrequiredannualTitleIXtraining.EnterpriseSystemsprovideddataloads,testingandsupportforuseraccessandsinglesign‐onfunctionality.
UpdatedBillingandRefundProcessesforAugustmester
Augustmesterbecameanofficialtermin2015.Multipleprocessesweremodifiedtoaccommodatechangestobilling,financialaid,refundanddropprocessingforthisnewterm.

PeerTransferprovidesameansforinternationalstudentstoconvenientlymakepaymentstotheirstudentaccountinUScurrency.EnterpriseSystemsworkedcloselywithPeerTransfer,NelnetandotherRadfordstafftomakethisintegrationasmoothtransitionforstudents.

EighteenBannermodulesandtheintegrationtotheCommonwealth’seVAprocurementsystemwereupgraded,testedanddeployedtoproduction.TheupgradessetuptheinfrastructureandapplicationenvironmenttoimplementthefirstphaseofBannerXE,thenextmajorversionrelease.

UpgradedAdAstraClassroomSchedulingSystemtoaCloudHostedSystem

Inaccordancewithbestpracticesandtheuniversity’ssecuritystandard,theUniversitycollaboratedwithanoutsideconsultingfirmtoconducttherequiredthree‐yearreviewoftheITsensitivesysteminventory,BusinessImpactAnalysis,andRiskAssessments.
IncreasedVulnerabilityScanningandPenetrationTesting
TheInformationSecurityEngineerachievedPenetrationTester(GPEN)certificationinMarch,2016,whichincreasedcapabilitywithinthedepartmenttoassesstargetnetworksandsystemstofindsecurityvulnerabilities.Onedetailedpenetrationtestwasconductedforacloud‐basedmobileservicescheduledtobeonlineinJuly,2016.Improvedvulnerabilitymonitoringtechnologiesandincreasedcapacityforcontinuousscanningacrossthedomainwerealsoimplementedtostrengthenthesecurityprogram.

OperationandSystemsAdministrationcompletedtheinstallationofnewloggingserverhardware.Duringthisinstallation,aredesignoftheapplicationarchitecturewascompleted.Thisredesignallowedforthesplitofthesearchengineandthedatabasetoincreasethespeedofqueriesandreports.
ImplementedSystemBackupsandSnapshotsatVirginiaTechforAdditionalRedundancy
ITInfrastructureimplementedanoff‐siterackofequipmentintheVirginiaTechdatacentertosupportsystembackupsandsnapshots.Thisrackofequipmentincludesasmallnumberofservers,storage,andadiskbasedbackupappliance.Therewillbecontinuedevaluationofthisimplementationtodeterminefutureexpansion.
ExpandedtheWirelessInfrastructureThroughoutCampus
AstheuseofInternetresourcesbytheuniversitycommunitycontinuestogrow,theneedforwirelessaccessincreasesonanannualbasis.NetworkServicespersonnelenhancedthewirelesscoverageinresidencehallsandacademicspaceswiththelatestinwirelesstechnologies.
MoveCloudHostedApplicationstoSingleSign‐On
