COASTAL CLEANUP DAY 2015

Think globally. Clean up locally. Coastal Cleanup Day is everywhere on Saturday, September 19 from 9am until noon.

JOIN THE BIGGEST VOLUNTEER EVENT ON EARTH.

WHY?

Oceans cover 71% of our planet. They provide up to 70% of the oxygen we breathe. And they need 100% of our help.  On September 19, join hundreds of thousands of other volunteers around the world — including over 10,000 Los Angeles residents — in showing some love for our most valuable natural resource. Volunteers from Huntington Beach to Hong Kong will do their part to clean up their local beaches, rivers, creeks and parks on Saturday, September 19.  In 2013 alone, 648,015 volunteers in 92 countries collected over 12 MILLION pounds of ocean-bound garbage. There’s no other single-day volunteer event that even comes close to the impact of Coastal Cleanup Day. In L.A., Heal the Bay is hosting over 60 cleanup sites to choose from.  HOW DO I SIGN UP?

1. Pick a cleanup site. We’ve got over 50. Check out the map at:http://www.healthebay.org/get-involved/coastal-cleanup-day/sites?We have beach cleanups, inland cleanups—even underwater Scuba cleanups!

Our Featured Creative Activist Project

We’re Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein and together we produce award winning documentaries on a variety of important subjects – all of which we both care deeply about.

Some of you may know me from my talk show or from John Water’s “Hairspray” whilst Abby is known as an award winning film-maker who’s credits include “Until the Violence Stops”. You might know us both from our first documentary The Business of Being Born. We’re currently working on films including Weed the People which explores the use of cannabis on children with cancer, as well as a film about hormonal birth control, called Sweetening the Pill.

We’re proud to call each other friends as well as producing partners. We made The Business of Being Born together, we made the follow up series together, and we also wrote a book together, called Your Best Birth. Together we make films which we feel passionately about and we hope they open up people’s minds about various social issues.

David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation   David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation responds to urgent conservation threats by supporting trusted, reputable individuals and organisations operating in the field.

The Founder, David Shepherd, is known internationally as an artist and ambassador for wildlife. In 1960 he became a conservationist overnight when he came across 255 zebra lying dead around a poisoned waterhole in Tanzania. Since then, with the help of supporters across the world, the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) has given away over £5million in grants to save critically endangered mammals in their wild habitat and benefit the local people who share their environment. David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation as an adaptable and flexible, non-

bureaucraticorganisation supports a range of innovative, vital and far-reaching projectsthroughout Africa and Asia, achieving real results for wildlife survival.

The Foundation supports sending undercover agents into the field to investigateillegal wildlife crime, training and supplying anti-poaching patrols. It has helped

establish nature reserves and other protected areas and works with governments to

NOT IMPOSSIBLE

THE LATEST

Whales, Whale-Snot & a Drone.A "Snotbot" that hovers over whale blow holes to capture key data from our world's biggest mammals. Does Dr. Iain Kerr have a job that's more fun than yours?

Thespian Patrick Stewart has joined the side of tech for the sake of humanity. More specifically, he's called for the support of Snotbot, a drone that helps us understand whales, that helps us understand the oceans, that ultimately helps us help humanity.

Dr. Iain Kerr is a leading scientist and current CEO of Ocean Alliance, an international organization devoted to whale research and ocean conservation, who has spent the past thirty years dedicated to understanding these marine mammals. Dr. Kerr is a firm believer that the future of humanity resides in the ocean. As he says: “we don’t live on planet earth, we live on planet ocean”.  Please check out:

NOT IMPOSSIBLE NOWThe People at Not Impossible Now believe in technology for the sake of humanity. While nobody can do everything, everybody can do something, so we crowdsource our solutions to real-world problems. Suddenly, yesterday’s pipe dreams are Not Impossible Now!

By helping one person we can all inspire others to do the same – it’s their “Help One Help Many” philosophy and it breaks down barriers, enabling greater access to all in need.

Access to healthcare, literacy and technology shouldn’t ever be limited by finances, geography or physical ability.

Listen in on Not Impossible founder Mick Ebeling's conversation on CBC radio's program "Q" right here: http://www.cbc.ca/q/popupaudio.html?clipIds=2476780836

In the book, which is available in stores and online now, Mick discusses how he’s made a difference in people’s lives through technology by assembling teams to help others in need. Here's an excerpt!

Also, we’re thrilled to announce that Not Impossible has received the “Innovative 3-DIY” award at the 2015 SXSW Interactive Innovation Awards in Austin, Texas, on Tuesday night, March 17. The award is in honor for Not Impossible’s work on “Project Daniel.”.

“Project Daniel” focuses on a teenager who’d lost both arms in a bomb blast in Sudan. When Not Impossible sent a team there to 3-D print limbs for Daniel, the impact resonated farther than any could have predicted. “Project Daniel” has not only restored hope for a teenager in Sudan, it’s spurred other individuals to take up the charge and make a difference.

HEAL THE BAY

Page 22: 2015 year in review ezine

This year in 2015, Heal the Bay celebrates three decades of protecting Los Angeles’ greatest natural resource. Yeah, it's a big deal. To help us get the word out, we collaborated with two creative ad agencies to create a summer campaign to honor our mission and rally our supporters. Here’s some details about the digital campaign, which you’ll see running over the next two months.

WHY NOW?30 years ago, Santa Monica Bay was riddled with pollution and dead zones. Since then, thanks to HtB’s tireless advocacy and passionate community engagement, it has been brought back to life. But there’s plenty of work still left to be done – be it battling offshore drilling, stemming the tide of plastic trash on our shores or fighting for a more sustainable source of local water. As a member-supported organization, we need the support of everyday folks to get the work done.Hinging off our 30th anniversary, we’re asking people to protect what they love by donating $30 and becoming a member of Heal the Bay.

WHAT CAN I DO?

In addition to becoming a 30th Anniversary Member (for just $30!), you can impress and inspire your friends by sharing the videos and cinemagraphs below on social media. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

OCEAN CONSERVANCY: Clean Beaches - Clean Water

We have a profound stake in a healthy ocean that is free of trash and marine debris. The ocean sustains us with the basic elements of life—it produces half of the oxygen in the air we breathe, and it is an essential part of the water cycle, helping to provide the water we drink. The world’s beaches, the frontier of this essential resource, support ocean health. They provide habitat and nesting grounds for important ocean wildlife like sea turtles and sea birds, and they attract vacationers from around the world, helping to sustain complex coastal economies. Please check out: http://www.oceanconservancy.org/healthy-ocean/clean-beaches-clean-water/

Trash Free Seas

Ocean trash ranks as one of the most serious pollution problems of our time. Much more than an eyesore, trash in the water and on the shore affects the health of people, wildlife and economies. For example, trash in the water:injures swimmers and beachgoers;harms wildlife that eat it or get trapped in its mess;drives away tourists—and their wallets; andensnares boat propellers, a costly navigation hazard.

The good news is we can prevent trashed beaches and debris-filled water. Ocean Conservancy has a vision of trash free seas, and we’ve been leading the way for more than 25 years.Ocean Conservancy is creating a world of trash free seas by:

Organizing and executing the International Coastal Cleanup®, the world’s largest volunteer effort to clean up our beaches and waterways, with partners around the globe.

Publicizing data  that help the public and the global science community better understand the problem of ocean trash. Please check out the NEW Ocean Trash Index: http://www.oceanconservancy.org/our-work/international-coastal-cleanup/2015-ocean-trash-index.html

Creating innovative solutions to the ocean trash issue with leaders from the private, public and academic sectors.

Building a movement to help inspire all of us to stop trash before it starts and live cleaner, healthier lives. Thank you for your consideration and support.

CREATIVE VISIONS

Give a BeatLauren Segal

Our Featured Creative Activist Project

Music energizes us, lifts us up when we’re down, reaches deep within us to release emotions, creates cultural understanding, and makes us more open and receptive to new ideas.

Give a Beat serves as a catalyst to transform the positive energy of global dance music culture into meaningful interactions that build community and generate social good. We provide dance and world music producers and lovers with a unique channel for activism and philanthropy by empowering them to make purposeful decisions. By creating a dynamic presence online, and hosting live events, we raise awareness of pressing issues and injustices and allow our supporters to make a difference through small, but deeply impactful, socially conscious acts. Give a Beat believes in the strength of collaboration. We partner with organizations that use music as a tool in helping vulnerable populations in the U.S such as veterans, parolees, the incarcerated, foster children, at-risk youth, homeless, and victims of domestic abuse.

Give a Beat will harness the positive power of dance music to make a tangible impact in the lives of others by creating innovative opportunities for economically isolated individuals and under-served communities. We believe every person deserves compassion, love, and forgiveness – a second chance, and with just a little help; people can turn their lives around and set out on a course toward a brighter future, benefiting the entire global family!

TIGER TIME

Page 33: 2015 year in review ezine

Keeping Tigers on the Agenda

2015 is an important year for the tiger. Following intense discussions at CITES in July 2014 some very specific recommendations on tigers were adopted:

Countries are to ensure that their legislation prohibits domestic trade, including in parts of captive bred tigers

It requires those who are currently trading to report the scale of that trade

It requires countries to report on the volume of existing stockpiles

It requires countries to destroy the bodies of deceased captive tigers

Between now and the next meeting in January 2016 progress will be assessed by a working group being chaired by China.

Help TigerTime demonstrate how important we feel these recommendations are to the survival of the tiger. Please sign up at http://tigertime.info/take-action/sign-up/

Our aim is to deliver over half a million signatures to the Chinese Embassy in London in October 2015 respectfully requesting that China, in its key role as chair

A solar powered family sedan that is so efficient she generates more energy than she consumes during the entire year! We LOVE it!

In 2013, a team of 20 students from the Netherlands' Eindhoven University of Technology amazed the global community with its world’s first solar-powered family car, Stella. That car’s performance went beyond even its creators’ expectations, running for 3000 kilometers (about 1864 mi) to win the biennial Bridgestone   World Solar Challenge   Cruiser Class, in Australia. On July 2,the new upgraded model, Stella Lux, was presented by the Solar Team Eindhoven, in the MetaForum of the campus.

HELP NEPAL

More than 8,500 people have died as a result of the back-to-back earthquakes. On last Sunday, Nepal’s Home Ministry confirmed at least 8,583 deaths from the past month’s two major earthquakes and subsequent tremors, making the combined disaster the deadliest in the country’s history, reports Reuters. On April 25, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake erupted approximately 85 miles east of the capital, Kathmandu, killing more than 8,000 people and destroying a half-million homes nationwide. Three weeks later the country was struck again by a 7.3-magnitude tremor near Mount Everest that killed more than 100 people and triggered fresh landslides. MORE: 6 Ways You Can Give to Nepal Earthquake Relief U.N. officials report that millions of people remain in need of basic humanitarian assistance as the looming monsoon threatens to inundate the country’s fragile transportation network and hamper ongoing aid efforts. The April 2015 Nepal earthquake (also known as the Gorkeha earthquake)[7][8] killed more than 8,000 people and injured more than 19,000.It occurred at 11:56 NST on 25 April, with a magnitude of 7.8Mw [1]  or 8.1Ms [2]  and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of VIII (Severe). Its epicenter was the village of Barpak, Gorkha district, and its hypocenter was at a depth of approximately 15 km (9.3 mi).[1] It was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake.[9] [10] [11]  The earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing at least 19,[12] making it the deadliest day on the mountain in history.[13] It triggered another huge avalanche in the Langtang valley, where 250 were reported missing.[14] [15]

Page 47: 2015 year in review ezine

Hundreds of thousands of people were made homeless with entire villages flattened,[14] [16] [17]  across many districts of the country. Centuries-old buildings were destroyed at UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley, including some at the Kathmandu Durbar Square, the Patan Durbar Square and the Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Geophysicists and other experts had warned for decades that Nepal was vulnerable to a deadly earthquake, particularly because of its geology, urbanization, and architecture.[18] [19]  Continued aftershocks occurred throughout Nepal within 15–20 minute intervals, with one shock reaching a magnitude of 6.7 on 26 April at 12:54:08NST.[4] The country also had a continued risk of landslides.[20] A second major earthquake occurred on 12 May 2015 at 12:35 NST with amoment magnitude (Mw) of 7.3. Mw.[21] The epicenter was near the Chinese border between the capital of Kathmandu and Mt. TIGER TIME

Our aim is to deliver over half a million signatures to the Chinese Embassy in London in October 2015 respectfully requesting that China, in its key role as chair of the inter-sessional working group, guarantees the compliance of CITES

NOT IMPOSSIBLE

A Bike Lane Provides Shade and Generates Solar EnergyA 20-mile bike lane in South Korea generates energy with the solar panels covering it.

Please check out the video at Janbaz Salehi’s YouTube Channel.

If you have ever ridden a bike on a hot day, then you know how valuable brief moments of shade can be. Now, bicyclists in South Korea can experience 20 miles of relief from the sun in a covered bike path that also generates solar energy.

The 20-mile bike lane is covered in solar panels and is in the middle of a six-lane highway. According to The Green Optimistic, there are even a number of underground bridge crossings that allows cyclists to get safely onto the bike lanes without having to cross the highway.

The idea of a solar panel bike lane is not an entirely new one. Last year,Not Impossible Now covered a story about a solar bike lane that was built in the Netherlands. This project was done on a much smaller scale, covering only 230 feet. In addition, the solar panels were on the ground, not covering the lane. Although this bike lane did not provide shade, it did show how certain road surfaces could be used to generate solar energy and provide special lighting, Autoblog reports.  While the bike lane in South Korea does offer shade and protection from cars, it is not without its limitations.

The solar panel bike lane may have its issues, but using available space to create clean energy is definitely a step in the right direction.

CREATIVE VISIONS

One of the Tribe Zoe Tryon

Our Featured Creative Activist Project

Guided by the understanding that we are all part of one human tribe, we fund and support tribe-driven health, education and economic capacity building projects, and use film, photography, books and art to raise awareness about indigenous issues, foster environmental stewardship and corporate responsibility, and inspire people everywhere to be one of the tribe.

Having grown up in the rather tame wilds of the English countryside, Zoe Tryon, founder and project director of One of the Tribe, has always had a passion for wild places. Zoe suspected that indigenous people may have had a better idea of how to be truly happy, than we in the modern world do, and how to live in relationship with nature.

Inspired by wild places and indigenous peoples, Zoe hopes that even in a small way, One of the Tribe will benefit this and all future generations, flora and fauna of our world.

TIGER TIME

Our aim is to deliver over half a million signatures to the Chinese Embassy in London in October 2015 respectfully requesting that China, in its key role as chair of the inter-sessional working group, guarantees the compliance of CITES members to all of these recommendations. Without that compliance, the future of the wild tiger remains uncertain.

Page 70: 2015 year in review ezine

Please be part of it. TigerTime already has over 300,000 signatories – help us reach the 500,000 mark by signing up at www.bantigertrade.com

NOT IMPOSSIBLE

Don’s Voice

“Don’s Voice” is a heart-warming look at the true story of Don and Lorraine Moir, a farm family debilitated by ALS. Don and Lorraine married in 1989. Six years and three children later, Don was diagnosed with ALS. Week by week, Don lost more of his motor-neurological functions. Then on May 21, 1999, Don was fitted with a ventilator. He hasn’t spoken since.

Don communicates via a letter board: a simple sheet of paper with the alphabet divided into quadrants. Letter-by-letter, word-by-word, the disease has forced Don to communicate silently through others for over a decade.

After hearing Not Impossible Founder Mick Ebeling on the radio, Lorraine contacted Not Impossible to help create a digital solution for her husband. The Not Impossible team, led by volunteer Javed Gangjee, utilized its know-how, the HP x360 Convertible PC and SpeakYourMind Foundation software to develop a simple interface that replicated Don’s paper letter board. Don was now able to access a new world of technology and communication for the first time since being diagnosed.

Through this simple technology, Don independently wrote a love letter to his wife and was able to audibly say “I love you, Lorraine” for the first time in 15 years.

“We hope ‘Don’s Voice’ will inspire and remind others to tell their loved ones they love them, and to use the amazing technology at our disposal to connect with each other rather than disconnect,” states Ebeling. “In the midst of busy schedules, and the madness of everyday life — sometimes you just need a reminder to #VoiceYourLove to those you care about most.”

Trash Free Seas

Ocean trash ranks as one of the most serious pollution problems of our time. Much more than an eyesore, trash in the water and on the shore affects the health of people, wildlife and economies. For example, trash in the water:injures swimmers and beachgoers;harms wildlife that eat it or get trapped in its mess;

drives away tourists—and their wallets; andensnares boat propellers, a costly navigation hazard.
