JIM HERLIHY

Plymouth State University, 1988 A leader with more than 25 years of experience in athletic administration, including nearly 12 years working at the NCAA Division II level, Jim Herlihy was been named the new Director of Athletics at Auburn University at Montgomery in September of 2015. Herlihy spent the past 16 months as the Director of Athletics at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., a NCAA Division II member which competes in both the Northeast-10 Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference. During his tenure with the Hawks, Herlihy oversaw 20 sports, nine facilities, 68 employees and more than 450 student-athletes. He managed the financial aspects of a $7 million operating

budget and Annual Fund, while cultivating gifts in athletic initiatives during the leadership phase of the first-ever Capital Campaign conducted in the 125-year history of Saint Anselm. Herlihy also served on the President’s Cabinet, where he was the liaison for numerous campus committees. Under his leadership, five teams qualified for national tournaments and more than 55 percent of student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List. Additionally, the department of athletics boasted a 92 percent graduation rate and student-athletes participated in more than 4,000 hours of community service. More than 60 percent of all student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, while athletics recorded a graduation rate more than 20 percent higher than the general student body. Founded in 1949, what is known today as the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) has prospered and excelled both athletically as well as academically in the Southeast region of the United States. The SSAC is currently made up of 14 institutions from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi. The conference was originally established as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GIAC) with six charter members, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the league was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference (GAC) and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. In November of 2012, the league announced that it planned to expanded to 16 teams for the 2013-14 season with the inclusion of Blue Mountain College, Martin Methodist College and Bethel (Tenn.) University from the TranSouth Conference. At the conclusion of the 2013-14 year, the league saw the departure of Southern Wesleyan University, Spring Hill College and Emmanuel College, which all transitioned to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, in addition to Southern Polytechnic State University, which was consolidated with Kennesaw State University. Those vacancies allowed for the admission of Dalton State College and Middle Georgia State College. Both institutions will compete within the SSAC during the 2014-15 season, giving the conference 14 total members. The SSAC hosts 14 conference championships including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s track and field. Since its inception and affiliation with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the conference has developed a reputation as being one of the premier conferences in the country in several sports. The SSAC boasts 32 teams and 11 individual national titles, while 30 more teams have finished as national runners-up. With its office based in historic Montgomery, Ala., the conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Sam Knehans, Treasurer Sally Shoppe and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The 2015-16 academic year marks the 16th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the SSAC. Since joining the league in 2000, the university has collected 74 total conference regular season and tournament championships.

Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 40 years, AUM has claimed 25 national championships and seven of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Kansas City, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and more than 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion.

HOLLYCLARKE

Graduate Assistant CoachSecond Season

Following a three-year playing career in which she was honored by the Southern States Athletic Conference all three seasons, Holly Clarke will remain on the side-lines for the AUM women’s soccer team in 2014 as a student assistant coach.

Clarke started 48 matches during her tenure with the Warhawks, winning 25 games and posting eight shutouts. She finished her career ranked second in the program’s

history in goals against average and fifth in saves. Last season Clarke allowed just 13 goals in more than 1,200 minutes between the nets, tallying four shutouts and 35 saves en route to second-team all-conference accolades. She also collected second team honors in 2012, when she allowed just 17 goals in 1,622 minutes. She posted a career-best scoreless streak of better than 442 minutes. The year prior she was selected a member of the SSAC All-Freshman Team after stopping 44 saves in 15 matches. Clarke has also been extremely successful in the classroom at AUM, earning NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors, Capital One Academic All-America Second-Team accolades and All-Academic honors from the SSAC twice. She was also a two-time Capital One Academic All-District selection. Additionally, she is a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society. Prior to joining the Warhawks, she attended Hewett Sixth Form in Norwich, England, and played three seasons of club soccer for the Norwich City Ladies. Clarke is the daughter of Alan and Frances Clarke. She is currently majoring in exercise science at AUM.

Tafadzwa Ziyenge takes over the helm of AUM women’s soccer team for the 2015-16 season in his first season in Montgomery. Prior to AUM, Ziyenge was head coach at Arkansas State where he accounted for a 39-50-8 record, including the first two winning seasons in the history of the women’s program. His 39 coaching victories are the most in school his-tory. In 2014, he led the Red Wolves to a 4-14 record as well as earning the Sun Belt Conference’s Team grade point

average (GPA) award. In 2013, Ziyenge posted his second double-digit win season with a 10-7-3 record and an even 4-4 showing in Sun Belt play. ASU also set school records for season points (114) and assists (36). The team also defeated Louisiana-Lafeyette in the Sun Belt Tournament marking its first postseason win in school history. In 2012, Ziyenge set a school-record 11 wins, the first winning season in the program’s history. The Red Wolves finished 5-4-1 in SBC play and made two consecutive ap-pearances in the postseason tournament. As a team, ASU established a new school record with 41 goals scored and 2.05 goals per match. Ziyenge led Arkansas State to consecutive seven-win seasons in his first two years. In 2011, he led the Red Wolves to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. During his ten-ure at Arkansas State, Ziyenge coached the all-conference performers, including first-teamers Loren Mitchell and Lindsay Johansen in 2012. The honors marked the first time in Red Wolves’ history that two players earned all-conference accolades in the same season. Ziyenge pushed his team in the classroom as they earned the Sun Belt Conference’s Team GPA award again in 2012. A-State finished with a 3.599 team grade point aver-age, the highest of any team in the conference. The team was also honored by the National Coaches Association of America for having the seventh-highest team GPA among all Division I women’s soccer teams. Before joining the Red Wolves, Ziyenge was the head women’s coach at his alma mater, the University of Alabama-Huntsville, from 1998 to 2009. During his tenure, he led the Chargers to 96-90-6 career record, reaching the conference tournament five times. Ziyenge also spent one season as the head coach for the men’s program, where he helped the team to Gulf South Conference Tournament championship match. As a player, Ziyenge played professionally in the Eastern Indoor Soccer League, where he played for two years with the Huntsville Fire. He finished the 1998 season as the club’s second leading scorer. He also played in the USL A-League, where he spent two seasons for the Tennessee Rhythm. Ziyenge was a four-year letter winner with the University of Alabama at Huntsville from 1993-96. He currently holds, or is tied for, the single-game record for shots on goal (10), the season record for game winning goals (8) and shots (72). Ziyenge is ranked third overall in goals scored, fifth in points and eighth in career assists. He is only one of six players to score 100 career points at UAH. During his senior year, he was named to the All-Region First Team, GSC regular season MVP and conference finals MVP. A native of Marondera, Zimbabwe, Ziyenge holds his undergraduate degree in business administration from UAH. Ziyenge is married to the former Carly Thomas, a previ-ous women’s soccer player at Auburn University.

Coaching Staff and 2015 Outlook

2015 SEASON OUTLOOK The Auburn Montgomery women’s soccer team will begin the 2015 season with eight returning letterwinners from last year’s 10-6-1 squad, and an inspired new head coach in Tafadzwa Ziyenge. The Warhawks’ senior core will undoubtedly be an asset with the return of Lila Remache and Julia Losert who accounted for 55.5 of last season’s goals. A certain key piece to the success of AUM in 2015 will be Ida Bjerkland’s presence in defense as she has provided the Warhawks with 56 starts over here three-year career. There are still question marks out there. Who will step-up and take the place of former goalkeeper Chloe Crook who registered 85 saves, 14 wins and four shutouts over a two-year span for AUM. How will the team respond to its new coach? Will the squad reach for the top this season? “We face the challenge in 2015 of stepping into the shoes of a soccer program that has a history of success,” Ziyenge said. “The bar has been set pretty high by our predecessors and we hope to continue the success of AUM soccer. To do this, we will need our returners in particular our five seniors Ida,Lila, Julia, Kendall and Stephanie to lead the way. They have been there before and understand exactly what our opponents bring to the table. AUM returners will serve in vital roles and should provide major stability to the program, both from a play and a leadership standpoint. Senior forward Lila Remache has played in 33 games during her career, while scoring on 13 occasions, including 11 goals last seasonwhile registering four assists. She was also honored with Southern States Athletic Conference Second-Team honors. Senior defender Ida Bjerklund, a Second-Team All-Conference performer last season, will anchor a defensive unit which allowed just 28 goals in 2014. Senior goalkeeper Chloe Crook made five starts for AUM in goal last year and posted a 4-1 record in those matches, one of which was a shutout. The Warhawks also welcome eight talented newcomers to the program. Joining the program for the 2015 season will be freshman goalkeepers Felicia Wester and Taylor Kitchens, defenders Brittany Havenner, Anna Svensson and Bronte Cintrone and midfielders Stella Mazillo, Hannah Long and Agnes Edlund. “I’m excited about the balance between rookie and returning

players and look forward to blending the two groups into one unit,” Ziyenge said.

Goalkeepers After a successful spring, Glenn is expected to take over as the team’s goalkeeper after the departure of Chloe Crook. Glenn accounted for four saves in six games of action in her first season at AUM, following a standout high school career at Stanhope Elmore High School. “Chloe has been chomping at the bit to take over in goal,” Brownlie, a former keeper herself, said. “She has prepared well for it and is excited about the challenge. She has a wealth of experience

NicoleLetford

Graduate Assistant CoachSecond Season

Marking her second season as student-assistant for the women’s soccer team, Nicole Letford will be assisting head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge in 2015. A Second-Team All-Southern States Athletic Conference selection last season, Let-ford was one of four AUM players to start all 19 games, tying for the team lead with nine goals and 20 points. She also led the team with 50 shots and 30 shots on goal. On three occasions, she scored multiple goals. She was named a NAIA Scholar-Athlete

following the completion of last season. The season prior Letford also started all 19 games, collecting four assists, including three against Brewton-Parker. She was selected to the SSAC All-Academic team each year. Before her arrival at AUM, Letford attended Forth Valley College in Falkirk, Scotland. She also played four years of club soccer for the Falkirk Ladies FC, where she helped the team to the League Cup Championship in 2006. Letford is the daughter of Debbie Letford and is majoring in sports management.

from the junior college level, where she led the team to the national tournament. She is a strong presence and has great athletic ability. I think last year helped her mature and she is ready to take on more of a leadership role. She is a calm presence in the back, which will be a key for our team.” “Morgan is easily the most improved player that we had this spring,” Ziyenge said of Glenn. “Morgan gained tremendous confidence comfortably embracing a regular starting role.” Adding to its depth at goalkeeper, Felicia Wester and Taylor Kitchens will join the squad as newcomers. “Felicia is a solid shot stopper with very good footwork,” Ziyenge said of Wester. “Taylor commands the box very well can distribute the ball very well with both her feet and hands,” Ziyenge said of Kitchens

Defenders The Warhawks surrendered just 28 goals while allowing 211 shots last season, with Ida Bjerklund and Amy Glynn largely contributing to those numbers. Bjerklund will take over the leadership role among the defenders, both verbally and by her quality play. “Ida is a fearless leader and commanding presence capable of operating in multiple positions,” Ziyenge said. Glynn, who appeared in 18 games last season, will also be counted on to help lead the Warhawks defense. “Amy is a no nonsense defender with a very sharp soccer mind,” Ziyenge said. Newcomers Bronte Cintrone, Brittany Havenner and Anna Svensson will be competing for playing time along side Bjerklund and Glynn. “Bronte brings a combination of speed and strength to the defense,” Ziyenge said. “Brittany is a very strong central defender who loves to overlap,” Ziyenge said of Havenner. “Anna possesses tremendous field vision and ball distribution skill,” Ziyenge said.

Midfielders The Warhawks midfield will likely be its strongest group of 2015 with the return of Lila Remache, Julia Losert, Kendall McCardell and Stephanie Anes, even with the loss of Kristen Hagen who started all 19

games last season. Remache, Losert, McCardell and Anes were major players last season for the Warhawks and will be counted on again in 2015 for AUM’s source of production. “The leading goal scorer last season, Lila is blessed with tremendous skill and a high work ethic,” Ziyenge said. “Julia is a very skillful and deservedly highly decorated multi-purpose player,” Ziyenge said. “Kendall is an energetic and creative utility player who can both go forward and defend, “ Ziyenge added. “Stephanie is a hardnosed defender who is very dangerous in dead ball situations,” Ziyenge said. Along with Michaela Dahlin, who started 17-of-19 games last season and accounted for two goals, Ziyenge is also excited about the addition of Stella Mazzillo, Hannah Long and Agnes Edlund, with starting postions still in flux. “Michaela is a tireless midfielder who operates with great ease both centrally and on the flanks,” Ziyenge said. “Stella moves very well off the ball and provides a key link between the midfield and attack,” Ziyenge added “Hannah brings a lot of creativity on the flanks and can deliver dangerous crosses into the box,” Ziyenge said of Long. “Agnes is a very polished central midfielder who creates opportunities for the offense,” Ziyenge said.

Forwards The forward position will return three contributors from last season, including Megan Kowalski, Caroline Booth and Kourtney Presor. Rising junior Courtney Omodei will make her return to the pitch after missing last season due to injury. She has 29 career appearances through two seasons at AUM. “Megan is a very adventurous outside defender who never hesitates to venture forward,” Ziyenge said. “Caroline is a very underrated offensive threat who can strike from difficult angles,” Ziyenge said. “Kourtney brings an up tempo mentality to the team and is a very underrated but dangerous finisher inside the box,” Ziyenge said. “Courtney brings a critical veteran presence to a young team and made tremendous strides after sitting out the 2014 season,” Ziyenge said of Omodei.
