TABLE OF CONTENTS

Clinton County is a community of makers. For more than 100 years, inventors, engineers, tradespeople, and skilled workers have supported a vibrant manufacturing sector and served as a pillar of our regional economy. Manufacturing has always been an industry of innovation and resilience. Manufacturers in Clinton County have seen their share of ups-and-downs, and many have endured hard times, only to come out stronger and better prepared to compete than ever. Today, more than 20 percent of the jobs in Clinton County are in the manufacturing sector, and the sector continues to grow.

Our local manufacturers are some of our best kept secrets. It easy to drive by their large, boxy facilities and not even notice that they are there. Yet, behind these mod-est facades, products are being produced that are being exported all over the world, using highly skilled labor and advanced manufacturing technologies.

The Chamber is proud to represent and support a strong community of manufacturers in Clinton County. These businesses represent the makers and creators in our community, and they will play a critical role in building our economic future. Each of these amazing companies has a unique and inspiring story to tell about their people and the products that they produce. If time and space per-mitted we would love to share them all, but we hope you enjoy a few of these stories of manufacturing in our 2015 Chamber Magazine.

TIMBERTECH: Quality combined with growth

By Kathleen Norman

TimberTech has gone through a lot of changes in the past few years, but some things haven’t changed — quality products, steady growth and a great relationship with Clinton County.

TimberTech is an award-winning manufacturer of capped composite and wood-plastic composite decking, railing and fastening solutions, as well as a leader in the research, development and marketing of these products. It’s latest “Legacy Collection” was recently named a “Professional Builder Magazine” Top 100 New Building Products for 2014.

From Clinton County back yards to a global

presence in 25 countries, products from Tim-berTech, as well as its sister brand AZEK, are considered a low-maintenance, long-lasting alter-native to wood decks. The TimberTech and AZEK product lines span decking, railing, porch, trim, moulding and pavers.

TimberTech products are produced through a highly automated production line. According to the CPG website, “Virtually every step of our manufacturing process is microprocessor con-trolled,” from the blending operations to fabrica-tion operations.

TimberTech moved into its current location on Prairie Avenue (the former Milacron building) in 1999 with numerous subsequent expansions,

including a warehouse in 2004.CPG International, a manufacturer of market

leading brands of highly engineered building materials, headquartered in Scranton, Pennsylva-nia, acquired TimberTech in 2012. The acquisition resulted in several CPG and TimberTech opera-tions consolidating in the Wilmington location.

With the consolidation- came the development of additional square footage and a steady uptick in hiring. The TimberTech campus now covers 400,000 square feet in its main manufacturing facility and 100,000 in its warehousing annex next door. Other CPG products are manufactured in Foley, Alabama and in Scranton.

The company currently employs over 300

people, with new job postings posted regularly in both plant operations as well as business office positions. The parent company, CPG Interna-tional, employs more than 800.

According to Vice President, Innovation Paul Bizzari, “We expect the Wilmington/Clinton

County community to continue to play an essen-tial part of TimberTech’s future success as it has since we located here in 1999. One of the key reasons for locating to Wilmington in 1999 was the work ethic instilled in and around this area. This fundamental work ethic continues today

as we look to continue to grow and develop our future business.

“Our goals for 2015 and would not be attain-able without the dedicated workforce we have in Wilmington, where each and every worker is an integral part of our team.”

PENNANT MOLDINGS features ne custom metal workmanship

Did you ever admire the classy look of a stainless steel stove? You may just be appreciating more fine Clinton County workmanship.

Pennant Moldings in Sabina is a leading manufacturer of custom metal roll formed and stamped products.

The Sabina-based manufacturer, founded in 1968, is a key supplier to the appliance industry, including national brands such as GE, Whirlpool and Electrolux.

“If you have stainless steel stove, chances are we made that outer skin,” says Pennant Moldings Human Resources Manager Jerri Stanforth.

But it’s not just appliances that have contributed to Pennant Molding’s success. According to CEO Michael Gaby, the compa-ny has expanded into the solar industry, producing commercial roof and ground mount support systems for solar panels.

“This is definitely a new customer and industry for us,” says Gaby. Company leadership discovered the need for these prod-ucts after attending several solar industry tradeshows while looking for new markets during the recent recession.

The forward-thinking has paid off. According to Gaby, since the nation’s economic downturn a few years ago, “We have almost tripled in size in the last four years. We have grown from a one shift operation to three shifts, mostly with current customers.”

Baseball fans will be interested to know that Pennant Mold-ings provided product for roof mount support systems for solar panels installed at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. “It’s a unique industry,” says Gaby, “and we are continuing to look into other opportunities.”

With around 100,000 square feet of production space and 110 employees, Pennant Moldings also provides parts for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in the appliance, automotive, heavy truck and general industrial markets. The company also offers its customers design assistance, prototyp-ing, welding, stainless steel decorative finishing, assembly, and powder coating.

NEW SABINA INDUSTRIES has its best year ever

A leading manufacturer and supplier to the automotive industry, New Sabina Industries in Sabina has been quietly producing dashboard instrument clusters and other automotive instrumentation for customers such as Honda, Fiat Chrys-ler, Subaru, Mitsubishi and General Motors for almost 30 years.

A subsidiary of Nippon Seiki, New Sabina broke ground for its Clinton County factory in 1986 with 12 associates on the payroll. Production reached the one mil-lion mark in 1994. In 2007, more than two million meters were produced, with the factory reaching three million just five years later in 2012.

According to Director Kelly Snively, last year New Sabina Industries had its best year ever with over 3.2 million meters produced. The company produces almost 12,000 per day.

With almost 150,000 square feet of space, New Sabina Industries currently employs around 425 production, shipping/receiving, warehouse, engineering, lab testing and office workers. The company also has around 121,000 square feet of additional warehouse space in Wilmington.

“Our main product is instrument clusters – basically the type of instrumenta-tion you see in the dashboard of the vehicle you drive,” says Snively. “Within the last two years, we started production of head up displays.”

Originally developed for the military, a head up display, also known as a HUD, transmits key information, such as speed and GPS navigation, turn-by-turn, into the driver’s field of view as the driver is focused on the road. “The advantage of a HUD is that it allows the driver to see the information needed without taking their eyes off road,” says Snively. New Sabina Industries produces around 10,000 HUD displays per month.

According to Snively, the company has also developed its own injection mold-ing operation with 25 machines operating on three shifts and producing 1.7 million parts per month. New Sabina Industries also manufactures printed circuit boards, with three printed circuit board production lines. The facility mounts around 30 million chips per month.

With its continued success, comes growth, with the company making changes throughout the factory to improve productivity, quality and energy efficiency.

According to Snively, equipment changes will affect the molding operation, which is changing from hydraulic to electric equipment. Management is also evaluating equipment changes for printed circuit board production to increase chip capacity and improve quality.

“We are also looking at making a change to our plant layout which will improve material handling and material flow. We are trying to reduce the number of “touches” (number of times a piece of material is handled) and distance traveled by associates in the plant (as they do their work).”

In addition, Snively says New Sabina added prototype manufacturing in 2014. “Prior to this, all prototype manufacturing was completed by our parent company in Japan. This process requires a high level of skill from our associates.”

Located in downtown Wilmington, just a few blocks from the Clinton County Courthouse, Custom Molded Products has been producing one- and two-shot injection molded products to numerous industries since 1999.

“Our biggest customers are auto-motive,” said President Norm Allen. “Almost every Honda vehicle cur-rently being made in North America has one of our parts in it.”

Custom Molded Products uses a range of materials to produce the interior car parts.

“We produce map pockets, panels for the power window switches, hous-ings for seat controls and seat belts, lock knobs — primarily items that go on the doors and seats,” said Allen.

The local manufacturer also pro-vides components to the medical, dental and construction industries.

The company offers injection, two-shot and insert molding. It also offers tooling, sonic welding, as well as assembly and packaging to complete any production needs.

“We go through all the manufac-turing steps here, from raw material through to a finished part,” Allen said.

Custom Molded Products recently completed a facility expansion at its Grant Street location, building a new warehouse to replace three older buildings. The 27,000 square-foot expansion gives the facility a total of 96,000 square feet of production and warehouse space.

About Wilmington, Allen says, “When I started, I wanted my busi-ness to be where I was from. I was born here and went to school here and it’s a great central location between Columbus, Cincinnati and Dayton.”

According to Human Resources

Director Jennifer Payne, the company has grown from 75 to 100 employees in the last year-and-a-half.

“We believe in developing our own people,” saidAllen. “Many of our people come here out of high school and we train them. All three of our current supervisors are people who graduated locally and then came to work here.”

This year, Custom Molded Prod-ucts is working toward achieving

its ISO 9001 certification, an inde-pendent accreditation that assures customers that an organization is following quality processes and procedures, and is therefore likely to produce a quality product.

“We anticipate being certified in the fall of 2015,” said Allen. “It will open up other markets for us. We are well established in automotive, but would like to go deeper into some other sectors.”

FERNO a world leader in EMS market

Page 17: 2015 Wilmington-Clinton County Chamber of Commerce Magazine

2015 Clinton County Chamber of Commerce 17

By Kathleen Norman

A leading employer in Clinton County for 60 years, Ferno is the global leader in pre-hospital emergency care solutions serving the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) market.

According to CEO/President Joe Bour-graf, Ferno wants to transform the future of EMS with new environments that address not just the needs of the patient, but of the caregiver.

“Everything we know about the EMS experience – from the point an ambulance arrives to the scene to the point it arrives at a hospital with a patient – the whole environment is changing because of the need for improved safety, higher efficiency and increased technology,” said Public Relations Director Heather Martin.

In working with military during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Bourgraf said, “We learned how the environment needed to change.”

Ferno began developing and manufactur-ing products and solutions that incorpo-rated modularity, re-configurability and interchangeability. “It’s led to the evolution of an entire new product range and portfo-lio,” said Bourgraf.

The company has based its Integrated Patient Transport System (IPTS) on three platforms: the human element, the vehicle environment and the intelligence platform.

“IPTS is changing how we go about designing products, how we go about test-ing products, and how we go about manu-facturing,” said Bourgraf. “It represents a new generation of design and development. It will change the way EMS is practiced.”

With the recent unveiling of Ferno’s iN/X Integrated Patient Transport and Loading System, the company has achieved its first milestone in transforming the market. The

product just began manufacture in Febru-ary after five years of development and has already won EMSWorld’s Innovation Award for Patient Handling. The EMS World Top Innovation Awards recognize companies that have produced innovative, new prod-ucts or made significant changes to an existing product.

Martin says research indicates more than half of all pre-hospital provider back injuries result from lifting patients, and nearly 25 percent of all EMS workers expe-rience career-ending back injuries within the first four years of their career.

The iN/X is the first integrated, X-frame design that allows operators to load and unload patients without lifting, navigate obstacles with the touch of a button and see and be seen in dark environments,” according to a Ferno news release.

“The iN/X optimizes both patient and medic safety, solving problems inside and outside ambulance,” says Bourgraf.

In 2015, Ferno is expecting to hire as many as 75 positions to support the demand for the iN/X, according to Martin. The 300,000 square foot headquarters and manufacturing facility located at the Wilm-ington Air Park currently employs more than 300 people primarily from Clinton, Fayette, Highland and Warren counties.

“We believe we can change how the EMS industry will engage in the future, providing optimal care not only for the patient, but for the provider,” says Bourgraf.

“Ferno is driving the future of EMS – everyone else is trying to keep up,” adds Martin.

Ferno is a family-owned company made up of 18 group companies with 700 people worldwide serving over 100 countries.

Established in 1955 in Staunton, Ohio, the company relocated its corporate head-quarters to the Wilmington Air Park in 1971.

As the oldest company in Clinton County — 143 years young — Champion Bridge Company has earned the right to take a break. But according to Proj-ect Manager Noah Dell, the company continues “to diversify and keep itself busy.”

Founded in 1872, company found-ers patented the “Wrought Iron Arch Bridge” and established “The Champion Iron Bridge and Manufacturing Com-pany” to build and sell its creation. Shortly thereafter it added fences, machinery and farm implements to its product line.

The company currently occupies 28,000 square feet at its location on East Sugartree Street in downtown Wilmington, where the company has maintained a presence since 1893.

Dell says steel is Champion’s main business today, with the company’s 14 employees providing structural steel for building projects principally in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

“We work on a lot of schools, medical and industrial buildings,” said Dell.

Champion is currently providing material for Wilmington College’s new

Sports Sciences facility that is expected to open in August 2015.

In 2013, the company began looking for ways to diversify during slow peri-ods. The result was the development and manufacturing of of the “Strong Box Hauler”, a large capacity dump trailer.

According to the company website, the trailer “provides all of the rugged-ness of a Dumpster, yet the ease and simplicity of a dump trailer.”

Champion manufactures the trailer for customers to buy or rent and can also provide delivery, pick-up, and dumping services. Dell says the trailer has become popular with home owners, farmers, landscapers and other small businesses.

Champion is planning for the future with equipment and technology upgrades that will enhance all aspects of its operations, including material management, drawing management and scheduling.

According to Dell, Champion is “leap-frogging” its competition, leveraging cloud storage technology which will give them increased access to drawings and other key pieces of information at job sites.

Historic CHAMPION diversi« es, continues to prosper

Airborne Maintenance & Engi-neering Services (AMES), located at the Wilmington Air Park, manu-factures aircraft components, replacement parts and aftermar-ket upgrades for commercial and private aircraft.

“When people think of us, they often think of large commercial jets flying in for maintenance. They don’t think of manufactur-ing. It’s a behind-the-scenes effort,” said AMES Director of Business Operations Brad Heath.

AMES itself has been around in various forms for more than 35 years, first as the in-house main-tenance and engineering support for Airborne Express and ABX Air, and then, in 2009, becoming a separate entity.

The ability to manufacture parts grew and expanded signifi-cantly under AMES, according to Heath.

Manufacturing was a natural development from AMES’ core maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations. “When air-planes come for maintenance, we frequently find defective or worn parts,” said Heath.

“First, we try to buy the replacement part, if we can, from an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). When we find it’s not available, we have to reverse engineer it and build the part ourselves.

“We are a specialty manu-facturing shop. We understand aviation and aircraft structures, and can meet unique customer requirements with customized manufacturing.”

In addition, AMES performs upgrades on aging aircraft to make them more modern in appearance, as well as technologi-cally capable for today’s digital world. These upgrades and retro-fits keep airplanes serviceable for a longer period of time.

“A lot of airplanes built in the 1980s and 1990s had older tech-nology, especially in the cockpit,” saidHeath. Pilots used to look at several individual instruments for their flight data– now they look at a few flat-panel display screens for the needed information.

“We build a lot of replacement cockpits,” says Heath. “We build new instrument panels, pull out older generation instruments, put in the new flat-screen displays, and make sure everything fits and functions properly.”

Heath says AMES also puts together kits and ships them to customers who prefer to install their own upgrades.

“We are trying to grow our manufacturing operation around kits and parts for people who want to upgrade and modernize their airplanes. We are good at it and have done it for many years,” he said. “We are well-known and it’s helping us to grow.”

According to the AMES website, the manufacturing operation is performed in a 100,000 square-foot facility dedicated to component repair, overhaul and light manu-facturing. AMES holds a Part 145 FAA/EASA Repair certificate and its component repair and engineering departments are AS 9100:2009 and ISO 9001:2008 certified.

Overall, AMES currently employs nearly 700 people at its various locations, with around 530 at the Wilmington Air Park. About 65 technicians and staff support the manufacturing operation.

Air Transport Services Group, Inc., (ATSG), the parent company of AMES, employs more than 1,000 people through its various subsid-iaries located at the Wilmington Air Park.

According to the AMES website, the company has four hangars encompassing 350,000 square feet at the Wilmington Air Park and operates line maintenance stations at the Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport and Miami International Airport.

When discussing the importance of different industries on Clinton County’s economy, agricul-ture and transportation come to mind.

But did you know Clinton County is home to a state-of-the art, high-tech global biopharmaceuti-cal manufacturing plant?

Alkermes plc opened its Wilmington manu-facturing facility in 1991, and has been a steady, strong employer and supportive community pres-ence ever since. Headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, Alkermes has an additional manufacturing facility in Ireland, as well as a Research & Development Center in Massachusetts.

Alkermes develops and produces drugs used in the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) diseases. According to the company website, Alkermes’ aim “is to develop new medicines that make significant advances for chronic CNS conditions that affect millions of patients, such as schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and pain.”

According to a 2015 National Institutes of Health (NIH) fact sheet, an estimated 2.4 million American adults have schizophrenia, one of the most serious types of mental illness. Worldwide, it is estimated that one person in every 100 devel-ops schizophrenia.

Additionally, census figures indicate an esti-

mated 16.1 million people in the United States suffer from major depressive disorders in a given year.

At the Wilmington plant, Alkermes is manufac-turing extended release injectable medications that treat opiate addition, schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder. The plant produces more than 40 million doses per year.

“‘Do I take a pill today or not?’ can be a compli-cated factor in treating these disorders,” saidRe-becca Peterson, Senior Vice President of Corpo-rate Communications. “Monthly injections such as those manufactured in Wilmington are more effective for treatment because they eliminate the need for the patient to make a daily decision.”

ALKERMES265 Olinger Circle, Wilmington, OH 45177937-382-5642 www.alkermes.com

Page 28: 2015 Wilmington-Clinton County Chamber of Commerce Magazine

According to Peterson, the Wilmington plant produces Risperdal, Consta and and Vivitrol.

Risperdal Consta is a long-acting inject-able that is given once every two weeks and is approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and for the maintenance treatment of Bipolar I Disorder.

Vivitrol is a long-acting injectable formula-tion of naltrexone, given once per month. It is approved for treating alcohol dependence as well as for preventing relapse to dependence on opi-oids such as heroin.

The drug blocks the brain receptors from feel-ing opiate effects. So, even if recovering addicts try to get high while on Vivitrol, they do not feel the effects.

Even with these drugs already in production,

Alkermes researchers continue to develop a pipe-line of additional drug candidates for the treat-ment of schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and pain, as well as diseases such as Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis.

“We are focused on the diseases that are breaking the back of our healthcare system,” said Peterson.

As new drug candidates move through the pro-cess that takes them from development to clini-cal trials to approval to production, Peterson says Alkermes holds Wilmington as a “critical part of our ongoing strategy. An increased number of drug candidates are being manufactured there.”

Peterson says Alkermes is planning for con-tinued investment in the Wilmington facility, including increased capital expenditures as the

company expands and continues to optimize the facility. “As the interest increases for injected medications, we anticipate more growth and will continue to invest in the facility and hire the best.”

The Wilmington News Journal recently reported an $18 million expansion is expected at the Wilmington facility with 51 jobs predicted to result from the expansion.

The plant in Wilmington currently employs approximately 300 people in its 200,000 square feet facility on 23 acres off of David Drive.

“CNS diseases are prevalent – they are everywhere,” says Peterson. “Your neighbor, your brother, your friend may have these diseases. Alkermes is really proud to be able to contribute to the community in finding treatments.”

It’s hard to drive through Clinton County without seeing signs designed, manufactured or installed by Abbott Image Solutions (AIS).

Wilmington Air Park, Wright-Patt Credit Union, Austin’s Casual Eatery, Bisig Automotive, First Choice Automo-tive, PAS Technologies, Praxair … the list goes on and on.

The sign manufacturer and image solutions specialty company is also on the radar of many regional and national organizations, according to Cinnamon. Companies such as Taco Bell have turned to AIS for re-branding and installation assistance.

AIS is a one-stop shop for designing, manufacturing, installing and repairing interior and exterior signage, such as electric and electronic message signs, way « nding signs, pylon signs (the super tall signs you can see from the interstate), neon signs, monument signs (signs that sit on the ground in front of many businesses) and wall signs.

In addition to signage, Abbott Image Solutions also produces specialty architectural items such as custom lighting, wallpaper, awnings and exte-rior lighting, as well as vehicle wraps.

The « rm recently produced trade show signage and other branded materials for local manufacturer Ferno.

Founded by Greg Abbott in 2012, the company has grown rapidly. According to Mackenzie Cinnamon, Sales and Marketing Coordinator, last year AIS achieved its greatest revenue to date and is looking forward to continued growth.

The « rm has recently expanded its physical presence on Park Drive in Wilmington, increasing from 7,000 to almost 18,000 square feet. AIS currently employs 10 people and is expecting to add several more posi-tions this year.

AIS provides project managers to direct your project through the entire life cycle from design and development to production to installation. AIS is experienced in working with custom-ers to understand the local permitting and variance requirements, as well as surveys, tra± c and feasibility studies, and incorporating that understanding into outcome.

In November, the company launched UDesign, a “do it yourself design tool that lets you be the designer from the comfort of your living room.” Users can apply designs to multiple di² erent products on the site.
