be awestruck by their level of detail—some of the sculpted

shoes still contain visible tread on the soles! Learn about

who worked to build China’s Great Wall, an architectural

this honoured area must be exactly the same size so

that they are perfectly uniform when marching. Explore

Cambodia’s emblematic Angkor Wat temple complex.

Although it took 40 years to complete in the 12th century,

one modern engineer estimated it would take 300 years

to complete today. And while in Hanoi, discover a unique

theatre in the world of its kind.

CHINA, VIETNAM, AND CAMBODIARemnants of some of the world’s most ancient

civilisations, the architectural marvels of China,

of Vietnam and Cambodia.

As visually captivating as these memorials, mountains,

sanctuaries, and statues are, so are the stories behind

them: the passions and peculiarities of emperors, artisans,

monks, and warriors. The joys and sorrows, triumphs and

tragedies of the Chinese, Vietnamese, and Cambodian

peoples are written on their lands and in their monuments,

in their tiny villages and in their great cities. You’ll get to

THE YANGTZE AND ITS FAMED THREE GORGESFlowing across the breadth of China, the mighty

Yangtze River originates from the glaciers on the

Tibetan plateau and empties into the East China Sea

at Shanghai, nearly 5,633 kilometres away. The people

of China have lived on its banks and sailed its waters

for millennia, and the Yangtze’s cultural, economic, and

historical influence—like the beauty of its famed Three

Gorges—is immeasurable.

HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR YANGTZE RIVER CRUISE:Three Gorges: The highlight of your cruise is a narrow

passage through the spectacular Three Gorges. The river

setting is enchanting, with rushing waters and nearly

vertical limestone cliffs, perpetually enveloped in mist

and clouds.

Qutang Gorge: The spectacular Qutang Gorge is the

shortest, but perhaps the most dramatic and majestic,

of the Three Gorges. Its sheer, steep cliffs reveal stunning

vistas and interesting oddities.

Wu Gorge: This gorge is noted for its plunging valley and

the tranquil beauty of its luxuriant, forested mountains.

The stunning Twelve Peaks flanking the gorge are

universally renowned for their picturesque charm and

fanciful shapes.

Xiling Gorge: The Yangtze’s longest gorge winds 64

kilometres through rich canyons dotted with fruit

orchards, picturesque villages, and historic relics.

Shennv Stream: Running along the Wu Gorge, the Shennv

Stream is a still-pristine tributary of the Yangtze River.

Among its most notable sights are its magnificent peaks—

some seem to stretch up to the heavens, while others

are so wondrously shaped, they’re said to have been

created by Shennv, the goddess of the stream, herself.

ELEGANTLY DESIGNED SHIPSClose-up views of the Yangtze’s stunning scenery

come standard onboard the elegant Century Legend

Beijing

FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, hutongs tour with home-hosted lunch, and Peking duck Welcome Dinner with complimentary wine

Your first full day in Beijing takes you to Tiananmen Square, which is both a centre of modern civic life in Beijing and the gateway to the Forbidden City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, it is surrounded by monuments to Chairman Mao and the Communist revolution that transformed China following WWII. You’ll stroll through the square and enter the Forbidden City, the 180-acre precinct of China’s historic emperors. Begun in the 15th century, the complex grew to encompass palaces and gardens, quarters for the imperial family, and offices for bureaucrats. This vast compound houses many treasures of the Qing and Ming dynasties.

Your next stop takes you to the traditional residential neighbourhoods of Beijing, the hutongs, which you’ll tour in the most traditional way—via rickshaw. You’ll also be invited in to have lunch with a local family. In the evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner of succulent Peking duck, a signature dish of the city, with wine.

DAY 3 u b BB L D

Beijing

FEATURED EXCURSIONS: The Great Wall and Kung Fu show at Beijing’s Red Theatre

Walk along a section of the legendary Great Wall, a UNESCO-designated site that has been one of the manmade wonders of the world since it was originally built in the sixth century to keep out invaders from the north. Back in Beijing, spend the evening enjoying a spectacular show that combines

kung fu prowess with acrobatics and dance; it’s the best performance in town.

DAY 4 u b d BB L D

Beijing, fly to Xi’an

FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Temple of Heaven and Beijing Zoo with giant panda visit

Start the day touring the Temple of Heaven, a UNESCO-designated site completed in the 15th century. A masterpiece of architectural and landscape design, it influenced architecture throughout China for centuries. Next, you’ll visit the giant pandas at the Beijing Zoo.

After lunch, you’ll fly to the ancient city of Xi’an, where you’ll settle into the Hilton Xi’an hotel.

DAY 5 u b BB L D Xi’an

FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Museum of the Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses, City Wall, and Tang Dynasty dinner show

Twenty-four centuries ago, China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, was entombed with a vast army of warriors and horses made of clay. The large tomb complex lay undisturbed until the 20th century, when it became one of the most astonishing archaeological finds ever recorded. Only about 8,000 of the life-sized Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses have been excavated; no one knows for sure how many more figures remain concealed. You’ll visit the museum where some of these figures are exhibited and learn how they were created. Then you’ll see the massive defensive wall built around Xi’an by the first Ming emperor in the 15th century. In the evening, indulge in a lovely traditional dinner—complete with chou-jiu, a milky rice wine served warm—and a cultural performance that re-creates the music, folk dances, and traditional costumes of the Tang Dynasty.

FLIGHTCRUISENIGHTS ONSHORE# UNESCO SITE

EXPERIENCE THE BEST OF CHINA—FROM ITS BUSTLING CITIES TO ITS NATURAL WONDERS—ALL IN ONE GRAND JOURNEY.

From thriving contemporary cities (Beijing, Shanghai, and

Hong Kong) and monumental manmade marvels (the

Great Wall and the Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses) to

glorious landscapes (Suzhou, the Yangtze, and Guilin), this

extraordinary expedition is the perfect introduction to the

grand sweep of ancient and modern China.

Begin in Beijing, home to some of China’s most famous

aftershocks of history in Tiananmen Square. Walk along the

Great Wall and marvel at the UNESCO-designated Temple

of Heaven. Then fly to Xi’an and be awestruck by the sheer

enormity of the Terra-cotta Army, the life-sized warriors and

horses that still stand guard over the tomb of China’s first

emperor. Visit Guilin’s Reed Flute Cave, where stalactites and

stalagmites flaunt dazzling colours. Take a cruise down the

bucolic Li River. Wander around the exquisite, tranquil Humble

THE MATCHLESS MEKONG, MEANING “MOTHER OF WATER”For thousands of years, the Mekong has been an

important trade route between the many villages along

its shores. Today, more than 60 million people in Vietnam

and Cambodia depend on this river for their livelihood

and it is home to more species of large fish than any

other river in the world. Now you can visit the peaceful

villages along this as-yet untamed river and delight in

the unique natural beauty of the magic Mekong onboard

Uniworld’s River Orchid.

Life along the Mekong may seem far removed from the

hustle and bustle of the everyday, but on this once-in-

a-lifetime journey, you’ll get the chance to meet with a

local family and see their village through their eyes. You

may even be invited into their home, where you can see

someone weaving silk scarves and table linens on the

family’s loom, just as has been done for generations.

SMALL GROUPS OF NO MORE THAN 20You will visit many villages and floating markets by

boarding a traditional sampan directly from your cruise

ship. Onboard your sampan, you’ll often be served fresh

fruits and beverages while your Cruise/Tour Manager

and local experts guide you to destinations that lie off

the beaten path. With a small group of no more than

20 people, you’ll enjoy authentic, immersive experiences

that are designed to give you a complete understanding

of the local culture and the way of life along the river.

This means that whether you’re touring an astounding

temple or learning about the medicinal uses of indigenous

fruits and plants from local villagers, you’ll have genuine

experiences every step of the way.

AN INTIMATE EXPERIENCE ONBOARDUniworld’s commitment to intimacy extends to your

shipboard experience as well. The River Orchid boasts no

more than 58 guests at a time, which means you will be

treated to gracious and personalised service. The staff

onboard the River Orchid will be there to ensure you have

everything you need—morning, noon, and night. Whether

you are sitting on the spacious sun deck being served

a refreshing complimentary beverage as you watch the

passing scenery or you are listening to an enlightening

lecture, your staff will stand ready to make your stay as

special and comfortable as can be.

DISCOVER THE RHYTHMS OF THE COUNTRYSIDECruising along the Mekong takes you back in time to

another century, where the rhythms of the countryside

remain unchanged. Travellers who wish to go with the

flow of the river and experience a more rigorous type

of adventure will find that a journey along the Mekong

through Vietnam and Cambodia is certain to leave a

lasting impression on both your heart and mind for

years to come.

At Uniworld, we—like Confucius—delight in entertaining

honoured guests from distant quarters; that’s why we

plan each included meal to delight and satisfy all your

senses. Whether you’re dining onboard, at an onshore

restaurant or hotel, or experiencing a special-themed

dinner, you will savour expertly prepared dishes served

in surroundings that encourage dining camaraderie and

cultural exchange.

Asia’s many cuisines are varied and sophisticated,

but your options are not confined to Vietnamese and

Cambodian foods. Plentiful breakfast buffets onboard

and at your hotels onshore offer an array of dishes from

around the world that are carefully prepared to please

every palate. Complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks

are served with dinner onboard and at the various dinner

venues in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Siem Reap.

AUTHENTIC DINING EXPERIENCESYou’ll indulge in a variety of dining options in authentic

settings, so you can fully experience the culture and

cuisine of the region. One such highlight is an Apsara

dance show with dinner in Cambodia’s Siem Reap. This

traditional Khmer dance form is better described as a

“dance-drama” because it conveys a story. The Apsara

dance is made up of four main modern genres of

traditional Khmer dance. While watching the show, you’ll

enjoy a typical Cambodian meal.

THE WEDGE OF SOUTHEAST ASIA OCCUPIED BY VIETNAM AND CAMBODIA IS A PLACE OF DELIGHTFUL CONTRASTS.

City, and Phnom Penh, to the floating villages of the Mekong,

where life is still lived much like it was centuries ago, you’ll be

Running the gamut from ancient to modern, rural to urban,

forested mountains to arable plains, Vietnam and Cambodia

Modern-history buffs will find fascinating and terrifying

remnants of the ravages of war, from the Cu Chi Tunnels in

GENERAL INFORMATION AND CONDITIONSPassport/Visa: A valid passport is required to travel on all Uniworld programs. Passports must be valid for at least six (6) months after the scheduled return date of the trip. You should check with your travel agent or the Australian Consulate Service for information regarding necessary documentation. Non-Australian citizens must contact the appropriate consular office for entry requirements pertaining to your trip.

For entry to China, a single-entry visa is required for all passport holders.

For entry to Tibet, a visa is not necessary, but an entry permit is required for all passport holders. Uniworld will provide a Tibet Entry Permit while on the tour for all guests. In order for us to properly arrange for your Tibet Entry Permit in advance, please email a copy of the photo page of your passport as well as a copy of your China visa to [email protected] no later than forty-five (45) days prior to departure. Please include your name and Uniworld booking number in your email.

A multiple entry visa is required for entry to Vietnam.

For entry to Cambodia, our Tour Manager will take care of obtaining Cambodian visas for each Guest while on the tour. Each Guest will need to provide the Tour Manager with their passport and $50 USD cash per person while on the tour for this purpose. The Tour Manager will then submit all passports to the Cambodian Immigration Authorities and obtain the visas. For southbound Mekong cruises, this will be done at the Siem Reap Airport. For northbound Mekong cruises, this will be done onboard the River Orchid prior to entering Cambodia.

A single entry visa is required for entry to Laos.

Any visa(s) or other documentation required for a particular itinerary is the sole responsibility of the guest. Obtaining and carrying these documents is your sole responsibility. Uniworld will not be responsible for advising and/or obtaining required travel documentation for any passenger, or for any delays, damages and/or losses, including missed portions of your trip, related to improper travel documentation.

Due to government imposed security/immigration measures, passport information and emergency contact information are required for all passengers prior to release documentation.

Advanced, Cancelled, or Delayed Sailing: Uniworld reserves the right to cancel, advance or postpone any scheduled sailing date and may, but is not obligated to, substitute hotels or vessels. Uniworld shall not be liable for any loss to you by reason of any such cancellation, advancement or postponement. In the event of cancellation by Uniworld, your sole right of recourse shall be to obtain a refund of monies paid to Uniworld in connection with such cruise/tour.

Cruise Prices: Prices are based on costs, charges, tariffs, rates, prices, taxes, levies and exchange rates as at 07 March, 2014.

Should the total cruise price increase by more than 10%, passengers will have the right to cancel their cruise within seven (7) days notification of the surcharge without penalty.

No surcharges in respect of cost or currency fluctuations will be made once payment for the deposit of your cruise is received. This does not apply to fuel surcharges and any taxes, charges or levies imposed by any Government or their agencies.

Cruise Participation: Uniworld trips are exciting, relatively active holidays. While there will be plenty of time to relax, there will also be much to see and do. Your included excursions may require an extensive amount of walking over cobblestone streets, uneven pavement and sometimes steps, so please bring any issues regarding your health or mobility to the attention of Uniworld when making your booking as this could greatly impact your holiday experience. In addition, you should know that while river cruise ships are spacious and elegant they may not have elevators. If you are disabled, a companion who will be responsible for providing any required assistance must accompany you, as Uniworld is unable to provide any individual assistance. Uniworld has sole discretion to decline the booking of any passenger whose condition may affect their own health, safety and enjoyment of that of other passengers. Additionally, Uniworld reserves its right to require a current passenger to end their trip for the aforesaid reasons. Uniworld do not recommend their tips for children under 8 years of ages.

Itinerary Changes: You can count on the value of Uniworld’s experience and regional knowledge to make sure you enjoy your cruise/tour even when conditions beyond our control occur. The very nature of a river, its sources, and networks of bridges and locks, means that there will be times when weather or other conditions in a region require Uniworld to make adjustments and/or modifications to an itinerary. Although every effort will be made to keep itineraries, vessels, and hotels as they are shown in the brochure, Uniworld reserves the right to substitute itineraries, hotels or vessels. In such cases, we will do everything we can to make sure the locations visited, the excursions taken and the hotels or vessels offered are similar to the ones originally planned. Any changes to itineraries will not result in eligibility for a refund. Itineraries are subject to change without notice and may need to be altered specifically because of water levels, wind factors, or other conditions.

Extensions/Land Tours: Uniworld reserves the right to reschedule and/or cancel land extensions or land tours if the minimum number of participants (20 people) is not met or for safety reasons. If you, as the Passenger, choose to cancel your pre- or post-cruise extension eighty-nine (89) days or less before departure, then please refer to the Cancellation Policy section for the applicable cancellation policy and penalties that will be applied.

Medical Issues: Uniworld does not employ staff doctors or nurses. Should you need medical attention, it will be at local facilities, at your expense. Uniworld is not responsible for any costs incurred as a result of medical services, or for the quality of medical care or medical services you receive.

Your Asia Cruise: We are confident your river cruise/tour in Asia will be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Indeed, a cruise on the Mekong or Yangtze Rivers is the most comfortable way to experience these fascinating countries. You will be travelling through a region that is continually changing. Many things are different from those at home, and what you might take for granted in Western countries may not be available during your cruise/tour. To make the most of your cruise/tour holiday in Asia, please take along your spirit of adventure and willingness to be flexible and tolerant. You will be richly rewarded, because this river cruise/tour is more than just a vacation; it’s a unique cultural experience you will remember and talk about for the rest of your life.

Young Travellers: Guests who are less than 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult who is 21 years of age or older. While we will accept children 4 years of age and older as Guests, it is our long-term experience that most children do not enjoy or appreciate the river cruise experience. There are no special arrangements, activities, medical facilities, or accommodations (unless noted) for children on Uniworld cruise/tour programs. Adults accompanying children are responsible for their behaviour onboard and ashore.

Smoking Policy: For the comfort of all our Guests, smoking is only permitted on the sun decks of our ships. Smoking is not permitted on motorcoaches.

Diets: Please advise the Uniworld reservation agent of specific dietary considerations and we will do our best to accommodate your request. Please also indicate your needs when you complete the Passenger Information Form at uniworldcruises.com.au.

Pets: Pets are not permitted on Uniworld trips.

YOUR CRUISE TICKET CONTRACTTransportation aboard the ship is provided solely by the ship owners and charterers pursuant to the terms and conditions of the cruise ticket contract that you will receive prior to embarkation. A copy of the form of the cruise ticket contract terms and conditions will be provided upon request. Please note that the cruise ticket contract includes a clause specifying the courts of Basel Switzerland as the exclusive forum for resolving disputes. The cruise ticket contract is governed by the law of Switzerland and is subject to limitations of liability and time limits for making claims under the Athens Convention Relating to the Carriage of Passengers and their Luggage by Sea, 1974 (“Athens Convention”) and the International Convention on Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims, 1976 (“1976 Convention”).
