As one of the newest members of the staff at University/College Library, I can attest to the commitment and hard work that the staff contribute to making this library a vital component of student success at both Broward College and Florida Atlantic University at Davie.

With a successful year behind us, we must now look at conquering the challenges that lay ahead. With this in mind, continued engagement with our stu-dents, faculty and staff will go far to ensure that the

Library becomes more integrated into the college’s academic and social endeavors.

As we are aware, change is constant and for libraries change is required in order to remain relevant. Our aim is to build a Library of the Future that will better serve all of our constituents.

Plans for this change must take into account our need for better use of space throughout the building, growth of electronic resources and the introduction of the latest technologies to support the curriculum of the future as well as staff work flow. Of course, none of these plans can be accomplished without the inclusion of the students and faculty.

Though it may be difficult, we are committed to the students and their success. With their success comes our reward.

After nearly 20 years of use, the side-

walks and landscaping in front of U/C

Library received a refresh in August

2014. The project included installa-

tion of new pavers and new concrete

sidewalks. Overgrown plantings were

removed and the traffic pattern recon-

figured for ease of access to the building.

BROWARD COLLEGE (BC) NEWS

In May, the Library put a copy of The Fabric of the Human

Body on display in the Health Sciences

Simulation Center. It is an annotated

translation of Andreas Vesalius’s De

Humani Corporis Fabrica. The new

book recreates the masterpiece of sci-

ence and art for the first time in a way

that is understandable to 21st century

readers who do not have any knowl-

edge of Latin.

Circulation & Reserves

This year U/C Library saw an increase in Academic Re-

serve usage to 6,958 loans.

Two full-time Circulation employees, Brian Mena

and Maria Nolazco, graduated from Broward Col-

lege with their Associate degrees in December 2014.

Finally, in February 2015, Leon Williams conduct-

ed a training workshop for North and South Campus

library faculty and staff, in order to aid in the imple-

mentation of the Reserves Module at their campuses.

Interlibrary Loan

In August 2014, the Circulation Department merged

with the Interlibrary Loan Department. This union

provides the Interlibrary Loan Department with added

staff support, which will further improve the excellent

customer service patrons are used to receiving from

both departments.

This year proved to be very busy with a marked increase

in both ILL borrowing and lending requests.

The Academic Success Center (ASC) had a great year serving faculty, staff, and students with resources that contribute to student success par-ticularly in the TOP12 and Developmental Education classes. A goal was set for a 20% increase in student visits. The ASC achieved a 47% increase in student usage of its services.

In addition, the ASC staff served over 15,000 students through outreach initiatives such as classroom visits, orientations and much more. For the

year, there were 513 orientations serving 11,380 students. Of the 513 orientations, 166 were for TOP 12 classes serving 2,122 students. Some of the special outreach efforts included programs such as Start Smart camp, “Talk STEM”, and A&P Mock test. Of the review sessions, we focused on targeted courses in the areas of Math, Science, and English. Services offered in addition to tu-toring included Early Alert, Smarthinking, laptop circulation and e-testing.

Additionally, for the year there were 25 classroom visits serving 561 students. Classes includ-ed FRE1120, ENC1101, ENC0025, ENC1102, MAT1033, MAC1105 and STA2023. Of these, 531 were students in TOP 12 classes. There were seven department visits (Biological Science, ESL, Accounting, and English classes).

The ASC continues to serve students and looks forward to reaching new goals in the upcoming year.

APRIL 2015

• Human Library

U/C Library hosted the Human Library in April,

2015. The Human Library, an international concept

that has taken place across the globe, allows students

to “check out” human books, instead of traditional li-

brary resources like hard copy books and electronic

resources. Human Books included faculty, staff and

administrators from Broward College and Florida

Atlantic University. Subjects ranged from aviation,

calligraphy, careers to anthropology, drones and po-

etry, among many others. Over thirty human books

were available during the event and over 100 students

were able to meet and converse with a human book.

• U/C Library Tells Students To Keep Calm

An outreach effort to help students focus and provide

stress relief during exam week saw its second iteration at

the end of Spring 2015. The project, piloted successfully

in December of 2014, has met with popular approval and

the library plans to offer it at the end of every semester.

The theme “Keep Calm and Quiet – It’s Finals Week” is

based on the famous British WWII era London Tube

signs urging passengers to “Keep Calm and Carry On”.

U/C Library offered BC and FAU students directional

services, support materials such as pens and scantrons,

and most importantly a smiling face and a kind word

to assuage student concerns during finals week.
