is a dedicated initiative to reestablish a sustainable population of wild Okanagan sockeye salmon. The Okanagan Nation is committed to bringing our salmon back by creating partnerships and by integrating modern science with traditional practices. A critical stage of our Nation’s restoration initiative has been the opening of the Hatchery. Our 25,000 square foot Hatchery has the capacity to rear 8 million eggs. It is currently equipped to handle all fi sh culture aspects required for 5 million eggs from brood stock management until fry release. Sizing the facility for 8 million eggs allows for fl exibility in the future, or to allow for changes in the fi sh culture activities. The Hatchery includes all buildings, equipment and infrastructure required to collect, incubate, rear and release fi sh for the sole intent of

producing sockeye fry. The Hatchery is signifi cant for the program, as it poses the least risk for the fi sh population, allows for maximum egg-to-fry survival, and permits monitoring of the interaction between sockeye and kokanee.During the entire course the Hatchery mimics the natural temperatures of the river and no anti‐fungal treatments or chemicals are used.

Welcome to a night where we celebrate the Best Commercial and Industrial Buildings in the Thompson Okanagan and Kootenay regions!

The Southern Interior Construction Association has stepped forward as Title Sponsor of this prestigious event, which highlights buildings from the Thompson Okanagan region, from Kamloops to Osoyoos, including Kelowna, as well as the East and West Kootenays, meaning properties to the Alberta border up to Golden, and across through Revelstoke.

It is the second time the entire region has been involved in one event such as this, specifically designed to celebrate the best of the best commercial and industrial buildings.

Events like this would not be possible without our sponsors, and Re/MAX Commercial is our Gold Sponsor, as well as category sponsors Coldwell Banker Horizon Realty MNP LLP, Colliers Inter-national Kelowna and Business Examiner Thompson Okanagannewspaper, which coordinates the event.

Congratulations to all finalists and all of those nominated. The in-terest in these Commercial Building Awards has been very strong. We received a large number of individual nominations from all over the region. To be eligible for nomination, an investment, commercial or industrial building, development or renovation projects ad to have been completed between January 1, 2014 and July 31, 2015.

The challenge of naming the finalists went to our team of independent judges, selected from the professional and development industries. Their bios are on page 3.

The criteria required a building or renovation project to complement the surrounding properties and area, be esthetically pleasing, include unique architectural features, and answer a specific development need within the community. The level of finish and choice in construction materials was also a determining factor, as was any environmentally friendly or green elements for possible consideration.

We are very excited about the future of these Commercial Building Awards, and the high level of quality development underway all over the region.

This program has been designed to showcase the finalists, and Business Examiner Thompson Okanagan will feature full coverage of tonight’s event, as will other media outlets in the regions.

Thank you for being part of such a special evening!

When the University of

Victoria’s presidential

search committee sat

down to find a new president,

it had a daunting list of criteria

that the candidate had to meet,

including:

•Academic and administrative

experience

•A value-based leader

•strategic and visionary

•A relationship builder

•Business acumen

•Fundraising

•student-centric

•High level o

skills

•A people person

“it would be accurate to say that

of the candidates that we reviewed,

[Jamie Cassels] was the best fit,”

said Susan Mehinagic, chair of the

university’s board of governors. it

was a unanimous decision and the

committee had 20 people on it.”

Cassels said the decision by the

committee and the board was “ex-

citing and humbling.”

“it’s wonderful to have people

put their faith in you,” he said. “it

also makes you acutely aware of

the responsibility you have.”

Cassels began his career at UVic

in 1981 as a member of the la

w

faculty.

you’re young,” he said. “i thought,

It m

ight sound strange to hear

that a community as young as

Westbank is coming back to

life, but that seems to

be the case.

“Two words: new collaboration,”

said Norm LeCavalier. He’s a busi-

ness strategist at N.J. LeCavalier &

Associates Ltd., as well a

s the co-

chair of the Westbank and District

Chamber of Commerce.

“Our focus is on our m

ember-

ship base, many of w

hom are

merchants within the Westside,”

said LeCavalier. L

ike every cham-

ber, its goal is

to be “member-

centric” – focusing on what its

members are looking for. But m

ore

than that, they’re looking beyond

their regular contacts in order to

expand.

The chamber has recently start-

ed the process of rebranding itself

as the Greater Westside Board of

Trade.

Since LeCaval ier came on

board as co-chair in January, h

e’s

brought in a number of b

usiness-

focused board members and has

begun initiating feedback from

past and current members. T

he

results? The chamber’s member-

ship has grown from 250 at begin-

ning of year have to

300.

The chamber has participated

with the District of West Kelowna

in business walkthroughs: visiting

merchants and getting to know

more about their businesses. Not

only has the chamber reached out

to individual m

erchants, they’ve

also collaborated w

ith the West-

bank Centre Merchant’s Group,

a grassroots organization of key

business owners who would like to

see commerce thrive in downtown

Westbank. And they have a very

specific way achieving this.

“Our mission is to lo

bby coun-

cil to m

ove the civic centre to the

downtown core,” said Angela

O’Brien, co-owner of Esteem

Lingerie in downtown Westbank.

There aren’t too m

any young

entrepreneurs who cite fa

ith

as the core reason for their

success. Chris Priebe does, but then

the former youth pastor isn’t lik

e a

lot of other entrepreneurs.

Chris has launched m

ore than

one website and w

as an integral

part in the development stages of

Club Penguin, a multiplayer online

game for kids that was so success-

ful it w

as purchased by the Walt

Disney Company in August 2007

for $350 milli

on. On April 3

of this

year, his la

test venture, Two H

at

Security, and the company’s prod-

uct PottyMouth were awarded the

grand prize of $5,000 at the Ven-

ture Okanagan Spring Investors

Forum.

Okanagan College business pro-

fessor Steve Watson, w

ho chairs

Venture Okanagan, said Priebe’s

chat tools concept is just what par-

ents are looking for.

“Rather than focus strictly on

good and bad words, the tools ana-

lyze how people combine words

and whether – once read in

con-

text – the meaning is naughty or

nice. Essentially, w

hat they’ve done

is design a better tool to help stop

everything from cyber-bullying to

potential pedophile

Roger Bruce and planning con-

sultant Chris Hall are taking

steps toward a new develop-

ment in D

uncan along Government

Street between Herbert and Cairns-

more streets.

The proposed project will sit on land

that covers about three city blocks and

has been in the Bruce family

for m

ore

than 70 years. The proposal c

alls for

a mix of commercial s

pace and resi-

dential units.

Bruce, who is an in

vestment adviser

with National Bank Financial, said that

the idea of the new build

ing has been

floating around for several years. C

ur-

rently on the property is a 49th Parallel

grocery store as well a

s a Mediquip

store.

Bruce’s Grocery occupied the land for

about 70 years, first in the old build

ing

that is now occupied by Mediquip and

later the “new” 49th Parallel b

uild-

ing that the family erected about 40

years ago.

Talking about the progress of the de-

velopment, Bruce said, “

Who knows?

The economy is what it is; there’s lots

of commercial space available in

the

Cowichan Valley and nobody’s in a

hurry to do too much. W

e’re taking it

one step at a time with the city because

we haven’t been in any real h

urry.”
