Christian Ethics – The Problem of Drinking – Part 7

The Bible teaches us that it is wrong to violate our conscience (Romans 14:23). The conscience can be im-properly taught and misguided. Therefore, whatever would hinder the functioning of the conscience in its proper way, must, for the Christian be wrong. The first thing that alcohol affects is that part of the brain that makes moral judgments. Alcohol does not need to be di-gested as does food. About 20% of the alcohol you drink will be absorbed into the bloodstream almost immediately. Before there is any noticeable change in the physical senses, the brain is affected. “The higher qualities of the mind are the first to be rubbed out by alcohol. The delicate capacities of the intellectual decision and choice and dis-cretion and will power are those faculties that are first dulled and then wiped out by alcohol because they are the least capable of withstanding its toxic effects” (Haven Em-erson M.D. Columbia University). Alcohol dulls those finer instincts that help make us different from the animals. Every person has a struggle between his higher nature and his lower nature. The higher nature is what he knows is right. The lower nature is the desire of the flesh. Paul talked about this struggle in Romans 7. Alcohol allows you to do things that your better judgment will not allow. Too many times men have used alcohol to make a woman more receptive to his sexual advances. The Bible is filled with sad results of such us-age I do not drink because of the influence over those that I love. I do not want my children to drink, yet the greatest single factor in whether children drink or not is whether their parents drink. Everything that we do affects our children and that includes whether or not we drink. Drinking can affect the child while it is still in the womb. According to an article in Time Magazine, 8 out of 10 children born to alcoholic mothers are likely to have a birth defect of some kind. In a Boston hospital records showed that of nine babies born to alcoholic mothers only one was normal! In the beginning of this series we noted some of the grim statistics about alcohol and teenagers, now we want to consider some more. Arrests of teenagers for drunken driving have tripled since 1960. Sixty percent of the people killed in drunken-driving accidents are teen-agers. Drunk-driving is the number one killer of men and women in their teens and twenties. Twelve year olds are now members of Alcoholics Anonymous. The Alcohol Safety Action Project reported: “In all studies, a close rela-tionship is found between the use of alcoholic beverages by children and their parents. When the parents do not drink, only 12 % of the children do drink. When the par-ents do drink, 52% of the children also drink! And most of these (75%) began drinking before they were nineteen. Thus we do influence our children!” Edgar Allen Poe, a great poet and fiction writer, died early in his life as an alcoholic. On one occasion Poe said, “I learned to love the flavor of good wine sitting at my father’s table.”
