On Sept. 29, 2015, the Metro 50 committee honored 50 of the fastest-growing, privately-owned companies

in the region at the 20th annual Metro 50 Awards. Earning the title of Oklahoma City’s fastest-growing company was CNI Advantage LLC., with Candor and PowerHouse Resources International Inc. rounding out the second- and third-fastest growing companies, respectively.

The company with the most growth in this year’s rankings, CNI Advantage, grew from five to 100 employees since 2013 and experienced revenue growth of more than 3,300 percent. CNI Advantage offers a total logistics solution for its customers, including construction, job order contracting, supply chain management and security support and has been in operation for four years.

“Central Oklahoma offers an immense amount of resources at a lower operating cost than other large cities,” Jeff Keel, general manager of CNI Advantage, said. “Strategically located in the middle of the country, operating in Central Oklahoma provides convenience and value.”

According to Keel, CNI Advantage was created to help promote the economic development of the Chickasaw Nation, and

its profits are used to help support Chickasaw Nation’s childcare, education, senior care and healthcare. For CNI Advantage, the people of Oklahoma City that make up their workforce are a key to their growth.

“We are surrounded by hardworking, dedicated employees who strive to help our company support our desire to contribute to the Chickasaw Nation and our surrounding community,” Keel said.

Candor, a full-service public relations and business consulting firm, took second place in the Metro 50 awards. Candor was founded in 2012 with one full-time employee – its founder and president Karen Wicker. Today, the company has expanded to 10 employees and has recently purchased a building on Film Row to accommodate its growth.

Wicker said that her company experienced growth organically as it added business consulting services alongside its work in perception management. Candor’s capabilities include addressing the strategic communications needs of its clients and advising them on organizational management.

Wicker, who spent part of her career in Tulsa before founding Candor, credits Oklahoma City’s location as a benefit to her business.

“In two or three hours, if you need to have a face-to-face meeting in any part of the state, you can,” Wicker said. “Half of my team travels every day. It is a good location for doing business at the crossroads of all the interstates.”

PowerHouse Resources International Inc., the third-fastest growing company, was founded in 2010 as an HR and finance consulting firm for government contractors. The company shifted its business model a few years later, and now acts as an aircraft and group vehicle maintenance company supplying services to the U.S. military throughout the country. From 2012-2014, PowerHouse Resources International Inc. experienced an 800 percent revenue increase and an expansion from five to 60 employees.

Linda Mandel, CEO and chief operating officer of PowerHouse Resources International Inc., said that Oklahoma City’s central location and its recent renaissance have helped her business succeed. She also credits the people of Oklahoma City as being a positive asset for her company.

“We strongly believe the people of Oklahoma City are one of its biggest assets,” Mandel said. “As PowerHouse Resources continues to grow its headquarters, we are confident that we can fill open positions with qualified, knowledgeable employees that have good work ethic.”

The 2015 Metro 50 Awards also honored two companies that have been on the list seven or more times in the last 10 years. Saxum celebrated its ninth appearance on the Metro 50 list, and Enviro Clean was recognized for its 10 years as a Metro 50 winner.

“The Metro 50 Sustainers are an example of what makes Oklahoma City’s economy so vibrant,” said Kurt Foreman, executive vice president of economic development for the Chamber. “Oklahoma City’s economy sustains lasting success for its companies, and in turn, those successful companies help maintain the strength of our economy.”

The Metro 50 Committee includes Bank of Oklahoma, Cox Business, EY, Express Employment Professionals, Hartzog Conger Cason & Neville, The Journal Record Publishing Company, OGE Energy Corp. and the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber. View a list of all 50 winners at www.okcchamber.com/metro50.

Leadership Notes Giving credit where it is due

Last month, the Chamber and other members of the Metro 50 Committee were able to honor the 50 fastest growing companies in the central Oklahoma region. While this event

celebrated individual companies throughout the metro area and in several different sectors, it also highlights something very important about Oklahoma City’s economy: It is sustained by our existing businesses.

In total, the 2015 Metro 50 winners generated more than $735 million in revenues and employed about 2,100 Oklahomans. This significant economic impact supports the recently released findings of our 2015 Business Retention and Expansion Report – Oklahoma City’s most significant economic growth comes from its existing businesses. In FY15, 93 percent of interviewed companies reported an increase or no change to the number of people that they employed and 69 percent said their product or service was in an emerging life cycle. A majority of the companies in Oklahoma City are thriving.

While a lot of factors contribute to a company’s success, we must give credit to the existing businesses that employ our neighbors and invest in our communities. The business leaders of Oklahoma City are hardworking and determined. I am confident that no matter what challenges come our way, the Oklahoma City business community will continue to lead the way in creating progress. The Chamber is proud to be your voice, and I am proud of all that you do to make Oklahoma City one of the greatest cities in the nation to conduct business.

Roy H. Williams, CCEPresident & CEO

Since the 2011-12 school year, the Oklahoma City Public School District has offered its students the chance to pursue more rigorous and specialized

courses of study in certain fields through its Career Academies – career-themed schools within the high schools.

The business community has responded with support for this effort to get students college- and career-ready after graduation by offering these students internships,

donating resources, serving on advisory boards and more.

Any eighth-grader can apply to be in one of the district’s Career Academies for high school, and the district has partnered with The National Academy Foundation and Metro Technology Centers to provide this educational opportunity

throughout the district.

On a recent overcast day at Capitol Hill High School in south Oklahoma City, a group of students gathered outside to fly the remote-controlled drones they had built in class the day before. On the first attempt, a propeller came off and the drone dropped from the sky, but later attempts were more successful as the drones took off.

For the students, landing the drones gently turned out to be the most difficult part of the class that day, as some

of them flew high into the air and sailed away.

In some ways, that’s the point: The Academy of Engineering that has brought these students together for the drone-flying experiment is designed to help them find flight and soar – with new ideas, skills and long-term goals that include college.

“I was lucky they enrolled me in the class. … I want to stay with this,” said ninth grader Heriboto Morales, who is interested in graphic design. “It involves a lot of math.”

In return, these students will enter the workforce better prepared to succeed in their chosen fields.

Capitol Hill’s Academy of Engineering is one of nine academies throughout the Oklahoma City Public School District offering specialized learning for students in certain areas, including fine arts, finance, health sciences, hospitality and tourism, law and public safety and more. The National Academy Foundation (NAF) notes on its website that during the 2014-15 school year, nearly 82,000 students attended 667 NAF academies in 38 states, including Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. And of those, 97 percent of seniors graduated from high school, and 93 percent of the graduates planned to go to college.

“We are a school within a school so we have a lot of pride in our program,” said Mike Jennings, career academy site manager at Capitol Hill, referring to the engineering academy.

Districtwide, about 1,100 students have signed up for career academies so far this year, said Kate Haydon, who was with the district and is now NAF’s academy development manager for this region. The first career academy students with OKCPS graduated this past May, and a majority of those named college as their goal.

The academies and related internships help students make the connection about why they’re in school, making learning “relevant and real,” she said.

Instructors and volunteers at several academies noted their students are motivated and confident; many are seeing increases in test scores among academy students.

In the freshman-level introduction to engineering design class, Capitol Hill academy teacher Jonathan Inhoff said the students not only are building drones, but they’ll also design items on a professional CAD program that they can print on a 3D printer.

In another classroom on the same campus, teacher Erika Reyes with the Fine Arts Academy leads a group of students through dance moves and exercise. The academy students will perform at the State Fair this month and the Fiestas de Las Americas next month. In addition to dance, this academy also offers music and drama and is in its first year at Capitol Hill.

“I hope to get our 75 freshman and sophomores on the right path. I hope to inspire future academy students in middle schools,” she said. “We are the only Academy of the Arts on the south side of Oklahoma City.”

On another recent afternoon at Southeast High School, students in the Academy of Information Technology are filming a video featuring business leaders eager to support and promote the academy. After it’s over, SandRidge Energy volunteers lead a discussion about video production and real-life applications.

These academies “are full of students that want to achieve and want to find a place in this city and in the business community where they can accomplish their goals,” said Bank of America Merrill Lynch Market President Tony Shinn in the video. “The students in high schools in these career academies are some of the best and brightest, and we need to provide all the resources and support we can to help them achieve their goals.”

GreaterGrads.com Gets a New Look

The Chamber recently launched a new website for its Greater Grads program, a Forward Oklahoma City program that connects recent college

graduates with employers in the metro area. The website, which can be accessed at www.GreaterGrads.com, offers resources for employers to strengthen their college recruiting strategies and provides internship listings for students to access. The website is also the main landing page for the Greater Grads Career Fair, which takes place each spring, and the InternOKC program.

The new website features a responsive design that can be accessed from desktop computers, smart phones and tablets. Not only does this design provide a cleaner and crisper look, it also makes sure that Greater Grads’ resources are available no matter the device used to

access them. The website better connects visitors to already available content from the Chamber and career services offices at area universities.

“In today’s mobile culture, it is important for us to make our information readily available across all platforms,” said Drew Dugan, vice president of education and workforce development for the Chamber. “The new site will provide better access for our employers, and it also better promotes living, working and playing in Oklahoma City to the students who are considering starting their career here.”

For more information about GreaterGrads.com or for details on the Chamber’s workforce development initiatives, contact Elisa Milbourn at [email protected] or 297-8951.
