“Tackling Illiteracy”In the Month of October student-athletes from our fall sports pro-grams will visit second grade classrooms across the district as a part of The 2nd & 7 Founda-tion’s “Tackling Illiteracy” pro-gram. In 1999, three former Ohio State University student athletes started the 2nd & 7 Foundation to continue to give back to area communities. Luke Fickell, Ryan Miller and Mike Vrable recognized the importance of community outreach while playing football for Ohio State and continue to pay it forward through the 2nd & 7

Foundation’s “Tackling Illiteracy” Program. With the sponsorship of Dr. Doug Myers, a local Zanesville Doctor and Tri-Valley graduate we have partnered with the 2nd & 7 Foundation and are very excited to implement the “Tackling Illiter-acy” program in our schools. This great program will send our high school athletes into the second grade classrooms where they will read to students and provide each of them a free book to take home. Our student-athletes will talk to the kids about why reading is so important and encourage them to read daily. As an additional

writing component second grade students will have the opportu-nity to write a letter describing a book that they read and mail it to their favorite student-athlete who will respond with a letter back. We are extremely excited about this program and would like to thank Dr. Myers and The 2nd & 7 Foundation for the op-portunity to implement “Tackling Illiteracy” in our schools. As we continue to encourage our young readers here at school we hope that you will continue to promote literacy in your home and read with your children daily.
