8/18/2019 2015 NYSSMA Conference
2/12
Invitation from the President
A IR TRAVEL
For the 80th time in our history NYSSMA will hold its Annual Winter Conference.
We will once again be in Rochester. Our professional association comes together to celebrate not only the joy of teaching music to the students of New York State, but also, pride in a job well-done. The conference will conclude with almost 900
student musicians who will be performing in eight All-State Honors Ensembles.
Also featured will be an impressive array of student ensemble and solo perfor-mances including Concert Hour and showcases for Composition, Electronic Music, and Piano. With over 150 workshop sessions and exhibitor showcases, there will undoubtedly be something
of interest and intrigue for everyone in attendance.
Our keynote speaker at Friday evening’s concert will be Glenn Nierman, President of the National Association for Music Education. An active and passionate music educator, he will surely start theconcert with inspirational words and an update of NAfME initiatives. I am sure his information will
be timely. Also featured on this concert will be Triton Brass. Triton Brass is an exciting musical col-laborative comprising five of the Northeast’s most talented brass players. Prize winners at the
2005 Lyon International Chamber Music Competition and 2003 Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition, Triton has also been artists-in-residence at The Boston Conservatory, where thegroup served as both performers and instructors, and are proud to be faculty and co-hosts for the Atlantic Brass Quintet International Seminar. Triton Brass also served as chamber music faculty atthe Boston University Tanglewood Institute from 2005-2010. Their wide range of repertoire
promises to be a special night for everyone.
Please join me in welcoming our special guests and celebrating another year of quality musiceducation in New York State. I look forward to seeing you all and catching up with old and new
friends in Rochester.
Sincerely Yours,
Dr. David A. Gaines

Fredonia Wind EnsemblePaula Holcomb, Director
The Fredonia Wind Ensemble consists of the most outstanding wind and percussion players at
the college. Dedicated to presenting the finest repertoire from all musical periods to its audi-ences, it draws from contemporary and historical wind works, orchestral transcriptions, as well as standard band literature. The size and instrumentation of the Wind Ensemble is dictated by the demands of the music being performed, thus affording a more comprehensive experience for both audience and performer.
Fredonia Saxophone EnsembleWildy Zumwalt, Director
Studies and performs original and transcribed works for various combinations of saxophones and appears frequently both on and off campus.
Róisín Dubh (Irish Traditional Music Program & Ensemble)
East Rochester Junior & Senior High Schools
Mark Gowman, Director
RÓISÍN DUBH (formerly Celtic Music Society) is a unique program comprised of stu- dent musicians from East Rochester Senior and Junior High Schools in East Rochester,
New York. This group of young musicians performs the traditional music of Ireland in authentic traditional and contemporary styles, and students are instructed
through traditional methods. Since 2001, we have performed nearly 300 times, released three albums, hosted seven workshops by All-Ireland Champion musicians, and been heard worldwide on NPR’s Thistle
and Shamrock radio program and Armed Forces Radio Network. Róisín Dubh was the only school-based performance in the 2013 Rochester Fringe Festival, and has shared the stage with some of the top Irish musicians from our region and the world, including Lúnasa, Téada, Gráda, and Karan Casey. Róisín Dubh frequently presents workshops to students, teachers, and college music edu-cation majors. Róisín Dubh (The Black Rose) was one of only four student ensembles from the United States invited to perform at
the National Music Student Leadership Conference in Salt Lake City, where we also presented a workshop for more than 100 teach-ers at the corresponding Music Educators National Conference.
