    FARMINGTON The104th Annual NorthernNavajo Nation Fair has alarger budget this year thatofficials say will be spenton events.

    The events include arodeo, pow wow, animalshows and tests of

    endurance. Also, for thefirst time in a decade,there will be a concert,which will feature EddyRaven.

    Were putting a lotmore money into ourevents, Fair DirectorRobert Felson said.

    Officials have nearly$470,000 in this years fairbudget, about $100,000more than it had last year,Felson said.

    The Shiprock Fair-grounds open at 7 a.m. onOct. 1, and the first event,which is at 8 a.m., is juniorrodeo. Events throughoutthat day include ElderFest, various Youth Dayactivities, a music festivaland a City of Fun Carni-val.

    On Oct . 2 , the fa ir -grounds open at 8 a.m.for a 4-H livestock show

    in the morning. Fairgoerscan part icipate in anendurance contest thatends at noon and cheero n b ul l r id e rs i n t h eevening. There will alsob e a k ar ao ke c on te st ,gourd dancing and publicspeaking presentations.

    The fairs paradebegins at 8 a.m. on Oct. 3,and the fairgrounds open

    two hours later. Eventsthat day include a rodeo, atalent show, a food eatingcontest and the EddyRaven concert at 7 p.m.

    On Oct. 4, the last dayof the fair, officials willhost, among other events,a wild horse race and agrand finale for the songand dance. Also on the billfor most days are gourddance contests.

    Felson said the fairbegan in 1909 and has pro-vided a chance for the 19nearby chapters to social-ize. But more than just thechapters are invited, hesaid. Native Americansand non Native Americansfrom around the countryattend the fair, whichdraws more than 100,000people, he said.

    Its an open invitationto anyone, he said.

    SHIPROCK The art-work selected as the posterfor the 104th annualNorthern Navajo Nation

    Fair is paying tribute to thecommunity of Shiprock.

    Artist Jonathan Curleymoved with his wife toShiprock eight years agoand since then he hasnoticed the unity that tiesthe residents.

    Everybody takes partwithin the Shiprock com-munity, he said in aninterview last week.

    The untitled piece,completed in aerosol paintand acrylic on canvas,depicts a pair of

    YeiBiChei dancers in thecolors of yellow, green,orange and purple.

    Curley, 34, explainedthat the deity on the rightside receives the peoplesofferings then unites withthe deity on the left, which

    releases the blessings.In the upper left corner

    is a hummingbird, servingas a messenger.

    Between the deities arelayers of blue, red, whiteand yellow symbolizingthe varieties of corn and

    prayers coming together asone.

    Mother Earth is depict-ed in green at the bottomof the painting and grow-ing from it is a corn stalk.
