2015
By Carolyn Gwartney, 2015
2014 has come and gone, 2015 is here…We wonder what will happen in this New Year.
The prices of cattle have been so great, I know the bankers are happy when you’re notes aren’t late.
It puts more money in your pocketwhen shopping you like to go…
I even buy more things that my husband doesn’t know.
We are always so happy when it comes convention time.
We never knows what the plans will be,but you can always bet that they will be mighty fine.
It’s not too early to start planning ahead…We hope everyone will have a good year.
Come to the convention when the time does come, and have some wild stories for everyone to hear !

2014-2015
JUNIOR
From a young age Michelle has been invested in the cattle industry. She attended her first cattle show when she was two weeks old and has never looked back. Michelle has had the opportunity to travel the nation and exhibit Simmental cattle. She was honored to have the 2013 Grand Simmental Heifer at Fort Worth, as well as Reserve Grand Simmental Heifer at the 2011 Tulsa State Fair. She has expanded her herd over the years to 42 registered Simmental and Angus cattle. While attending Geary High School Michelle was active in FFA, Student Council, Beta Club and served her class as President. She was most involved in her FFA chapter, serving as Chapter President for two consecutive years. She was able to incorporate her cattle operation into a research experiment of Grain Fed vs. Grass Fed beef conducted
through her local chapter. Throughout her High School career she was active with FFA on a local, State, and National level. At the 2014 State FFA Convention she received her State FFA Degree, as well as placing 3rd in the Agriscience Research-Animal Systems proficiency award, 1st at the Agriscience Fair Division II and was selected as a candidate for State FFA Reporter. Upon graduating in May, Michelle has continued her education at Oklahoma State University majoring in both Animal Science and Agricultural Communications. She plans to utilize these degrees by coming home to continue the farming operation and pursue a career in the agriculture industry. Michelle is a great ambassador for Simmental genetics and the OKSSA is proud to have her as our Junior of the Year.

The Helm Family….Mike, Sarah, Michelle, Allison and Katie. The Helm Family
operates Helm Farms, a cattle and
wheat operation in western Oklahoma.
After purchasing their first registered Simmental cow in
1981; Mike bought out a herd and became a Lifetime member
of ASA. As the farming operation grew so did the Helm family. In 1996
the family attended their first cattle show. Allison and Katie began their show career in
4-H and Michelle tagged along. The girls showed many mostly Angus heifers and a few crossbred steers. They
were very involved in FFA and the commercial cattle operation. Katie holds the title of the first “Calf Scramble Champion” at the Tulsa State Fair. In 2004, Michelle purchased her first show heifer from the Strate Family. The next couple of years were spent hauling to mostly Oklahoma shows. The girls did well with their cattle; winning many divisions and state champion showmanship awards. The commercial herd continued to grow and the SimAngus cattle did very well. The purebreds bought years ago had set the foundation for a dependable set of commercial cows.
In 2009, we purchased a heifer from the Elmore Family at the Tulsa State Fair Sale. “Kate” was our first trip to The National Western Livestock Show in Denver and set the bar very high for the percentage class. Since that first trip to a major show, we have also made Kansas City, Louisville and Fort Worth our vacation destination spots! We have continued to upgrade and cull our commercial herd introducing new genetics that have added many quality traits to our operation. In 2013, we campaigned a bull (Lincoln) and Michelle’s heifer (Rolling Hills Allison) at Fort Worth. “Ally” was Grand Champion heifer and Lincoln was Reserve Champion Bull. That year Lincoln also won Simmental Breeders Sweepstakes, The National Western Livestock Show and Fort Worth. We are anxious to see his 2015 calf crop.
The Helm Family continues to grow and start the next generation of cattlemen. Allison married Todd Ice and they raise commercial cattle and wheat on the TI Ranch. Katie married Chad Scheihing and they operate Scheihing Farms. They have blessed us with 3 grandchildren: Caleigh, Grady and Sage. Michelle is a freshman at Oklahoma State University where she is majoring in Animal Science/Ag Communications. She has continued to stay competitive in the Jr. Division and has started entering cattle in open shows. Mike and Sarah have been great supporters and valued members of the OKSSA. They would like to thank the OKSSA for being named Family of the Year.
