Tournament of Champions By Josh Hyde

“Through these doors pass the world’s finest bowlers,” read the sign at the entrance to Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn, Ohio. History has backed up this statement, as these lanes host the PBA Tournament of Champions. Upon entering, bowlers feel as if they are going to Augusta. To make this prestigious tournament, bowlers must win a PBA national title (up until 2011) to be eligible. The tournament format has been long and grueling with 24 games of qualifying and 24 games of round robin match play. When a bowler wins it all, they know they are one of game’s best. In the past, they received a white blazer and a lifetime exemption to the tournament upon winning. Winners still get a lifetime exemption but they no longer receive the white blazer. The Tournament of Champions was the only tournament that all of the bowlers cashed in, until 2011, after 2011 only a portion of the bowlers cashed. In 2013, the tournament went back to where the bowlers had to have a PBA Tour title to be eligible to bowl in the TOC and each bowler cashed in the tournament. The TOC is a prestigious bowling tournament that a pro-bowler can win.

History

Joe Joseph won the first Tournament of Champions in 1962. Jack Biondollio bowled the first televised 300 game in 1967. Don Johnson would make five consecutive shows from ’67-’71 including his famous 299 game against Dick Ritger’s 268-game. This would be the highest scoring match that would be a record for 23 years. Jim Godman would become the first bowler to win the TOC Tournament twice. Just two years later after his ‘73 win, Dave Davis would become the second pro-bowler to win twice. This was followed by Earl Anthony in ‘78 who would become the third pro-bowler to win twice, also becoming the first bowler with 30 career titles. It would take five years before another pro-bowler, Mike Durbin, would win the TOC twice. Just two years later, Mike Durbin would write bowling history as he became the first bowler to have three TOC titles on his resume. Marshall Holman would become the third pro-bowler to surpass the $1 million mark in career winnings when he won the ‘86 Tournament of Champions, allowing him to become the fifth pro-bowler to have multiple wins at the TOC. The following year, Pete Weber would win his first major and become the fastest bowler to win 10 PBA career titles. In ’93 (the last year that Firestone sponsored the tournament),

George Branham III would become the first African-American bowler to win the TOC by defeating Parker Bohn III 227-214. Two years later, Mike Aulby would become the fourth bowler to complete the Triple Crown and the first to complete the Grand Slam. In 2000, Jason Couch was the first bowler to successfully defend his TOC title. Two years later, Couch would make bowling history to three-peat the TOC and join Mike Durbin as the only bowlers to have three TOC titles and he earned his tenth career PBA Tour Title. In ’08, the greatest comeback in TOC history occurred when Michael Haugen Jr. came back from a 50 pin deficit to win the TOC title against Chris Barnes 215 to 214. In ’10, Kelly Kulick made history by becoming the first woman to win a PBA title, defeating Chris Barnes 265-195. In ‘11, Mika Koivuniemi would win the largest paycheck in PBA history ($250K). In the semifinals, he bowled a 299 game while Tom Daugherty bowled the lowest game (100) in television history. In 2013, Pete Weber become the first player to complete the Triple Crown twice joining Earl Anthony with the most major titles (10) and the longest span between TOC titles.

Sponsorship

The longest sponsorship for the TOC was Firestone Tire Company who sponsored the event for 23 years. General Tire had a 3-year commitment as sponsor but backed out after only one year (1994). Brunswick picked up the sponsorship in 1995. They would sponsor the Tournament for 6 years. Dexter and H & R Block would pick it up for three years each. Now, Barbasol is the TOC sponsor.

Conclusion

The TOC is one of the most prestigious bowling tournaments in all of professional bowling. There has been a number of bowling history-making moments during the TOC. If a bowler wins this Major tournament he or she is surely one of the best in the game.

2015 Tournament of Champions Story Lines

o Walter Ray Williams Jr. is still trying to win his first ToC title and second player to complete the super slam

Walter Ray Williams, Jr. is still trying to win his first Tournament of Champions title. He will join Mike Aulby as the second player to complete the Super Slam if he does so. The Super Slam consists of the USBC Masters, the U.S. Open, the Touring Players Championship, the PBA World Championship, and the Tournament of Champions. He will have the chance to have won every major (and nine total) in professional bowling.

o Pete Weber is trying to become the third player to win the ToC three times and surpass Earl Anthony’s Major record

Pete Weber is trying to join Mike Durbin and Jason Couch as the only bowlers to win the Tournament of Champions three times. If he does, he will also surpass Earl Anthony’s career major record. He is currently tied at 10 titles. There could be three bowlers in this elite club of titlists.

o Weber is also trying to win his fourth title at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind.

Pete Weber is also trying to win his fourth major title at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind. He previously has won the 1991 U.S Open, the 1992 Touring Players Championship, and the 2013 Tournament of Champions. He will have the chance to win back-to-back majors at Woodland Bowl.

o Belmonte is working to become the second player to successfully defend his ToC title and become the fastest bowler to win four majors

Jason Belmonte will seek to make the title match for the third consecutive year. Last year’s titlist, Belmonte won by one pin over Wes Malott 219-218. Belmonte will have the chance to become just the second player to win back-to-back Tournament of Champions titles. Doing so will make him the fastest bowler to win four majors.

Page 8: 2015 MEDIA KIT - joshhydebowling.com MEDIA KIT Presented by: ... have a PBA Tour title to be eligible to bowl in the TOC and each bowler cashed in the tournament. ... Championship

o Duke is trying to become the second player to complete the Triple Crown twice

Norm Duke is trying to become the second player in PBA history to complete the Triple Crown twice. He is also trying to join Walter Ray Williams, Jr. and Pete Weber—the only other player to complete the Triple Crown twice—as winning multiple majors at Woodland Bowl.

o Couch is trying to become the first player to win four ToC titles

Jason Couch was the first player to win three Tournament of Champions in a row. Now, Couch is trying to become the first player to win four titles in the event, which would make him one of the greatest bowlers of all-time.

o Seven players are trying to win their second ToC title: Barnes, Koivuniemi, Jones, Rash, Belmonte, Kulick, and Haugen

There are seven players that are trying to join the club of multiple Tournament of Champions titlists. Chris Barnes, Mika Koivuniemi, Tommy Jones, Sean Rash, Jason Belmonte, Kelly Kulick, and Michael Haugen, Jr. all have this chance. However, Barnes, Koivuniemi, Jones, Rash, and Belmonte likely have the better chance.

o Kulick is working become the first woman to win multiple ToC titles

Kelly Kulick is trying to become the first woman to win multiple Tournament of Champions titles. Along with this, she is also trying to win her second career PBA Tour title. This would be a great opportunity for her to emulate her 2010 form.

o Salvino will be the oldest player ever in a PBA Tour event

Carmen Salvino will be the oldest player in this year’s Tournament of Champions field. Not only that, but this event will make him the oldest player ever in a PBA Tour event at the age of 81. Salvino was one of the founding members of the PBA in 1958.

o Shafer is still looking for his first Major

Ryan Shafer has been so close at a number of Majors. He has been in a total of fourteen Championship Round Appearances. He went back-to-back in 2000 and 2002 in the Tournament of Champions only losing to Couch which gave Couch his three-peat in the ToC. This would complete his resume for having a major title. He is probably the greatest bowler without a major title.
