Misericordia University is a member of the NCAA Division III. The largest of the NCAA’s three divisions, Division III promotes a well-rounded approach to intercollegiate athletics participation. While Division III is best known by some for what it doesn’t offer – athletics scholarships – it has plenty to offer.Knowing that Division III student-athletes play for the love of the game, the D-III experience is structured to help participants devel-op fully as students, athletes and citizens. Athletics participation at many of the 444 institutions that comprise Division III allows for student-athletes to succeed in the classroom and athletics. That certainly is the case at Misericordia as student-athletes are often active in student government, residence life and other extra-curricular activities. In addition, Division III playing seasons and class schedules are designed to minimize conflicts between athletics and academics to promote academic success. This is evidenced by MU’s overall 3.17 GPA among student-athletes and 182 MAC All-Academic honorees in 2013-14While Division III athletics programs promote participation, they don’t sacrifice when it comes to competition. In fact, the NCAA sponsors 36 national championships annually at the D-III level.Misericordia is one of just two schools in the Middle Atlantic Conference to offer all 23 sports sponsored by the MAC.MU has enjoyed its share of success since joining the Division III ranks in 1992. MU has captured 43 conference championships and sent 22 teams to the NCAA Championships, including the women’s soccer team advancing to the NCAA Final Four in 2012.In addition, several individuals have put Misericordia on the national map: Ashlee Ward, Track & Field: NCAA Indoor & Outdoor high jump champion. Eric Sweeney, swimming: NCAA champion. Willie Chandler, basketball: Second-leading scorer in Division III history. Heather Dougherty, swimming: NCAA All-American. Sam Helmstetter, women’s soccer: First-team All-American. Michelle Myers, volleyball: Led Division III in blocks per game. Amy Bower, cross country: All-American. Frank Redmond, track & field: All-American. Kim Daniel, field hockey: Eighth in Division III career assists. Mike Murphy, baseball: Division III single-game hits record.Founded in 1924, Misericordia is a liberal arts based, co-educa-tional Catholic institution located in northeastern Pennsylvania.Sponsored by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, MU is one of 18 Mercy institutions in the United States and welcomes individuals from all faiths and offers a variety of liberal arts and professional programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.MU offers 34 majors in three academic colleges: Arts and Scienc-es; Health Sciences; and Professional Studies and Social Sciences.Dedicated to the values of the Sisters of Mercy: mercy, service, justice and hospitality, these values are found throughout the Uni-versity, from programs of study to service projects. The hallmark of MU is a dedicated faculty and a high quality core liberal arts and sciences curriculum. With a total enrollment of 3,111 students, including 1,982 full-time, Misericordia offers the benefits of a small university with the scope of a larger institution. An average class size of 19 ensures personalized attention and a 12.6:1 student/faculty ratio allows students and faculty to truly know one another.Located in Dallas, PA, MU’s 123-acre campus has a suburban at-mosphere and is only nine miles from Wilkes-Barre and two hours from New York City and Philadelphia.

The athletics facilities at Misericordia University recently underwent major renovations which provide MU’s student-ath-letes with some of the finest competition venues in the region.

The facilities - all located on campus - include the Anderson Center, Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Outdoor Athletics Complex, Tambur Field, Metz Field House, McGeehan Field, Anderson Softball Field and six tennis courts.

Since 1993, the Anderson Center has provided a home for the Cougars basketball, volleyball and swim teams.

The Anderson Center features a six-lane swimming pool, indoor track, racquetball courts, fitness center and an aerobic/dance studio.

The building attracts more than 75,000 visitors annually for recreational uses.

Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Athletic Complex was con-structed in 2002 and serves as a home for the footbal, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and track & field programs.

The Anderson Complex features a synthetic grass field and a six-lane synthetic track, with an eight-lane straightaway, which allow MU’s student-athletes to compete even when weather conditions are less than ideal.

The Misericordia softball team has called Anderson Field home since 1992.

Named for the late Dr. Robert S. and Geraldine Ruth Daley Anderson, the Anderson Sports-Health Center, Anderson Athletic Complex and Anderson Fields are all tributes to their commitment to Misericordia University.

Mangelsdorf Field honors the dedication of Jack and Dorothy Mangelsdorf to MU and the region.

The Misericordia tennis complex opened in 2004 as part of a gift by the M & T Foundation.

Honoring the Robert Tambur family, Tambur Field was chris-tened in 2013 as the new home for the MU baseball team.

McGeehan Field, named in honor of Mary Ellen McGeehan ‘46, opened in 2012 and provides a second artificial grass venue for the MU field hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams.

In addition, the John & Mary Metz Fieldhouse was construct-ed in 2012 and provides meeting and locker room space for the MU football, soccer, field hockey, track & field, baseball and lacrosse teams.

The 21,750 square-foot facility is named for long time board of trustee member John Metz and his wife and recognizes their contributions to the MU community.
