Welcome to the 2015 Regional Health and Physical Education (HPE) Conference Series. This conference is part of a schedule of professional development events provided by ACHPER QLD. As the peak professional body, ACHPER QLD is committed to supporting HPE teachers through local events, conferences and networking and is pleased to deliver a conference in Mackay in 2015. Our capacity to provide this conference is in no small part due to our 2015 Central Queensland Regional Conference Sponsor, ‘CQ Sporty Schools’ and our 2015 Gold Sponsor RHSports and our Major. Our thanks go also to our Conference Trade Exhibitors Binnacle Training and MyCo Sports and our Conference Advertisers, Griffith University, School of Education and Professional Studies, Flexibooks, HART Sport, Kokoda School Treks and Nelson Cengage Learning.

This year’s program was developed in consultation with local HPE teachers. It is designed to support the complex professional needs of HPE teachers, with a specific focus on teaching in regional Queensland. With the theme The Learner in HPE the focus of the conference is on creating and planning Prep to Year 12 HPE units of work. Local teachers have generously agreed to share practices that have worked for them. Their presentations are designed to stimulate ideas about how you can make a difference, promote healthy and active lifestyles and provide high quality HPE programs for your students, regardless of resourcing. You will be challenged you to consider how your school, your students and the curriculum informs your planning, pedagogy and assessment. As always the conference will offer challenging and diverse presentations for primary, middle and senior phases of schooling. ACHPER QLD is delighted Troy Meston of Griffith University has agreed to present at the conference. Troy’s session on “The Role of Embedding in HPE – Traditional Indigenous Games Informing our Future Together", whilst I am pleased to present a Keynote session on the Australian Curriculum and its potential application in your school setting. ACHPER QLD has been able to keep costs of the conference down due to the support of our sponsors, exhibitors and advertisers. Delegates will gain maximum value from the conference through their active participation and engagement with our presenters, sponsors and trade exhibitors and we ask you support them, wherever you can. I congratulate you on your attendance. Queensland students need enthusiastic educators who embrace new curricula, fresh ideas and useful technology in their daily teaching practice. Ongoing changes to curriculum and technology, along with increasing demands for accountability in schools are a fact of life. ACHPER QLD hopes this conference will assist you to face these challenges and make a difference for your students. Ben Williams President, ACHPER QLD

Friday 1 May 7.30am: Registration Opens and Trade Exhibition

8.00am: Welcome and Housekeeping 8.15am: Keynote: AC:HPE - Where are we now? AC:HPE: In, about and through movement – integration in Health and Physical Education. Ben Williams, ACHPER QLD There are many perspectives and positions on the implementation phase of the AC:HPE, and this session “Where are we now” will piece together, what the major policy lines are and what that means for teachers in their day to day practice. Within teaching and learning in Senior Physical Education in Queensland, physical activity becomes the medium for learning, as well as a source of data (QCAA, 2010). This has been described by Arnold (1985) as learning in, about and through physical activity. Similarly, the Australian Curriculum – Health and Physical Education shares a related view, with Valuing movement (ACARA, 2014) as one of the key propositions that underpin teaching and learning. This workshop provides opportunities for teachers to develop ideas and investigate different ways of integrating learning experiences from across the two strands of the Australian Curriculum – Health and Physical Education from F-12, based on the experiences of teaching in Senior Physical Education in Queensland. The session will explore ways of planning for the development of learning through Personal, Social and Community Health and Movement and Physical Activity. The workshop will provide some ideas to plan movement challenges, as well as opportunities to demonstrate how students’ personal and social skills can contribute to health and wellbeing. 9.15am: AC:HPE: In the Local Context Facilitated discussion with local presenters

With the Australian Curriculum in its final stages of approval, its release brings the challenge for schools to integrate changes into their existing work program. This session will explore the implementation of the Australian Curriculum from the perspective of local teachers who will share their challenges and achievements on the journey towards implementation. 10.15am: Morning Tea & Trade Exhibition 10.45am: Designing Effective Assessment Alyssa Beaufoy, ACHPER QLD & Griffith University This session will help primary and secondary teachers to engage with principles of assessment design. The session will assist to develop effective assessment instruments to gather appropriate evidence of what students know and can do. The assessment principles will be applied to assessment opportunities in Senior Physical Education to align with syllabus and work program requirements (QCAA, 2010). Teachers are encouraged to bring along a current assessment task or instrument as well as a device which is capable of editing these documents. Participants will have an opportunity to evaluate and check alignment with the principles of effective assessment design.

Alyssa Beaufoy is a secondary Health and Physical Education teacher and has an undergraduate degree in Human Movement Studies (Education). After teaching in Townsville as a HPE teacher and Sports Coordinator, she is currently undertaking a position as a lecturer in Health and Physical Education in the School of Education and Professional Studies at Griffith University. In her role as a Project Officer for ACHPER QLD, Alyssa is an enthusiastic advocate for equitable and lifelong participation in physical activity, on a school based and community level. 11.15am: Teaching Personal & Social Health in the year 3 – 4 classroom: the TLC Approach (Concurrent session) Sue Whatman, Griffith University This presentation explains how the Titans Learning Centre (the TLC) has customised the Australian HPE Curriculum, drawing upon the personal, social and community health strand, to motivate and socially skill young learners who are "at risk of disengagement" from schooling. It includes exemplars and some demonstration of many of the pedagogical approaches employed by the TLC teachers to motivate young learners to attempt challenging work, reflect upon failure, to set goals, to interact positively with their peers and build self-esteem. Dr Sue Whatman is a Senior Lecturer in HPE & Sports Coaching in the School of Education & Professional Studies, Griffith University. Along with Dr Katherine Main, Sue has been engaged in a longitudinal study of the classroom pedagogical practices of teachers and student outcomes at the Titans Learning Centre. 11.15am: Effective Use of Video for Assessment (Concurrent session) Adrian Brandon, Whitsundays Anglican School In this session delegates will explore how to use video recording methods to gather evidence on student performance in the physical domain. The workshop will include a brief discussion of video analysis tools and suggestions for preparing a submission for verification. 12.00pm: CQ Sporty School a Physical Activity in Schools Project Meg NcNamara, CQ Sporty Schools Thirty-six Central Queensland Sporty Schools are currently trialling ways to increase the physical activity levels of their primary students through sport. This session will describe the Department of Health funded initiative and present feedback from trial schools about the strategies that have been most effective. 12.30pm: Lunch and Trade Exhibition 1.00pm: Keynote: "The Role of Embedding in HPE – Traditional Indigenous Games Informing our Future Together" Troy Meston, Griffith University This keynote and practical engagement session will tie together the legacy of the Yulunga resource and the current landscape which informs Indigenous participation, content and issues inside the framework of schools in the Queensland context. The keynote will build from current National policies which inform Indigenous presence inside school programs and highlight EATSIPS (2011), a Queensland initiative that demonstrates how to engage respectfully and effectively with Indigenous content inside the classroom. Through the key note discussion some basic principles of embedding will be highlighted, which are affirmed from being informed locally, building strategically upon a collective and shared sense of Australian history. From this context, the Yulunga resource

will be demonstrated, through practical engagement, as a vehicle that naturally facilitates opportunities to apply the principles of the embedding framework, in, about and through HPE. 1.30pm: Traditional Indigenous Games in Practice Troy Meston, Griffith University This session will follow on from the keynote presentation and will provide the audience the opportunity to experience traditional indigenous games, and explore the embedding framework, in, about and through HPE. 2.30pm: Advocating for HPE Ben Williams, ACHPER QLD Health and physical education teachers are often fighting to gain more resources or keep the scare resources they have. Time, money, equipment, people: These are amongst the precious ingredients that help PE teachers do their thing. The need for these is only heightened at a time of large scale educational change such as the one currently confronting Queensland schools. In this workshop we look at ways of building a persuasive case and advocating for the learning area. 3.00pm: Conference Close
