WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 2015 - CHESTER COUNTY PRESS - KENNETT RUN 5

We are a SMALL TOWN…hosting a BIG RACE…supported and surrounded by our STRONG COMMUNITY.The Kennett Run Charities was established in 1989 by local community service groups with the purpose of promoting the general well be-

ing and civic betterment of Kennett area residents, organizations and projects. It has been our honor to support the needs of our community. Our race offers multiple running and power run events attracting all ages and abilities. Our one-of-a-kind multi-faceted event conducts a 1-mile

run, 5K and 10K as well as our well know 5K and 10K PoweRun. We’re pleased this year to continue the FundRun. This is a unique concept, in that by just participating, gives directly back to our schools in the Kennett and Unionville Districts. This all volunteer community event is planned, organized and staffed by hundreds of community volunteers along with Rotarians and members of the Kennett Square Lions Club. What make thisday so special is the big party in the park for all the racers, their families, volunteers and anyone else from our community to join in this celebration. Food, drinks and entertainment are all provided by the generosity and support of our local businesses and sponsors, celebrating the strength of com-munity and family in Kennett Square.

Through our grant application process, the Board of Directors has gifted over $1,000,000 back to the community since its inception. In addition, the funds raised and our volunteers have assisted in the Anson B. Nixon Park’s maintenance and re-development plan, community enrichment pro-grams and reaching out to non-profi ts in need of funding. Our all volunteer Board of Directors and Race Committee believe strongly in the mission on which the charity is based.

We are so very grateful for the support of our corporate sponsors. Knowing the economic business climate today, their generosity continues. It is most important we extend our appreciation to East Marlborough Township, Kennett Borough, Kennett Township, Police, Fire Companies and

EMS workers for their support in planning this annual event. We could not provide the quality of an event like the Kennett Run without them!On behalf of the Board of Directors of Kennett Run Charities, Inc. and the dedicated volunteers, we look forward to a fantastic day celebrating the

26th Kennett Run in order to serve our community. So, REGISTER AND JOIN US!

See you on race day!Matthew Genereux, President

program benefi ts from money raised by the Kennett Run.

Recently, Perna discussed her in-volvement with WIN and how the funding fi lls a critical need in the community.Q: Was the WIN program your

initiative? When did you get started?A: The seeds of WIN were sown in

my conversations with the Kennett Consolidated School District’s for-mer superintendent, Dr. Rudy Kar-kosak. After the concept was given the green light, Dr. Constance Lo-gan wrote the proposal for a 21st Century Community Learning Cen-ters Grant, and we received funding for a three-year program beginning in the 2007-08 school year. I was hired as the program coordinator and designed the program around

the grant proposal. Q: How was the program initially

funded, and how have the funding sources changed? A: Initially, WIN was exclusively a

federally funded program; today the program is supported by a combina-tion of federal funding, private dona-tions, and student fundraising. Q: How many students take ad-

vantage of all the program offers at Kennett High School? A: It varies from year to year, but

averages 100 students annually. Q: How much money does the

program get through the Kennett Run, and what percentage is that of the total funding? A: It varies. This year the program

received $2,000, which is about 4 percent of the overall fundraising budget.Q: How does WIN differ from

what a school guidance counselor might do? Is it more individualized help for students, or broader based? A: The WIN program was origi-

nally conceived to provide aca-demic support, improve mathemat-

ics achievement, increase options for post-secondary education, edu-cate parents regarding the American school system, and mentor Latino students. This was accomplished with the assistance of Kennett High School teachers who led the after-school program that focused on homework, class projects, and the graduation project. It also included a four-week summer program.

A primary focus of the WIN pro-gram is college readiness. This as-pect facilitates college visits for all class levels, as well as assistance with online SAT registration and col-lege applications (e.g., college and scholarship essay tutorials, FAFSA/PHEAA workshops, parent meetings, and transportation to required col-lege interviews). Additionally, WIN provides special workshops that pro-mote community awareness, career preparation, and self-confi dence through dramatic exercises. It also connects students with the commu-nity through volunteerism, which enables students to complete this important aspect of their graduation

project. Q: How do students help at the

Kennett Run? Is it one of many vol-unteer/service projects you connect students with? A: On the morning of the Kennett

Run, WIN students meet very early in Anson B. Nixon Park to set up wa-ter tables for the runners. They also help clean up the park after the race.

Additionally, last year 13 WIN stu-dents met monthly with the race di-rector to discuss the logistics of pro-moting the “Kennett FundRun” in all six schools of the Kennett Consoli-dated School District. The students created posters and fl yers, met with the principals, and engaged with teachers from each school to dis-cuss how they could help motivate the students to participate in the FundRun.

Other organizations that WIN stu-dents volunteer with include the Kennett and Longwood Rotary, Ken-nett Square Senior Center, the Mush-room Festival, Cinco de Mayo Festi-val, Kennett YMCA, Red Clay Valley Association, Familias Fuertes, and

the Kennett Education Foundation. Q: Do you hear back from stu-

dents who have taken part in the WIN program after they have en-tered or completed college? What do they say? A: I am happy to report that many

former WIN students do keep in touch with me throughout their col-lege years, and even long after they graduate from college. I often hear “I don’t know if I could have done it without WIN.” Two former WIN students have agreed to share their feelings about the program:

Yanet ZavalaKHS Class of 2009

Penn State graduate 2014“I am very thankful to Ms. Perna

and the teachers of WIN. I am espe-cially thankful for Ms. Perna entering my life, especially when I was a ju-nior at KHS. Thanks to her, I started getting involved in the community and participated in numerous sum-mer programs. She provided me with multiple resources to prepare for college. I strongly believe be-cause of the WIN program, I was accepted into Penn State University, main campus. The college readi-ness program is extremely helpful to all seniors. It helped me throughout my college career. She defi nitely goes over and beyond for all her stu-dents. If it were not for all her help I wouldn’t have pursued higher edu-cation. I graduated from Penn State

University with a bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Park and Tourism Management.”

Angel Chimal RodriguezKHS Class of 2012

Junior at Immaculata University Criminal justice major“The WIN program is a great re-

source for all students. Students should take full advantage of every-thing it has to offer. If it wasn’t for this program and the help of Ms. Perna, I don’t believe that I would be in col-lege, pursuing a higher degree. This program helped me to realize that college was not only a possibility, but also a place where I could excel. With Ms. Perna’s assistance, I was able to apply to many colleges and for many scholarships. I think that this program opened my eyes to the re-alities of a higher education, because Ms. Perna daily enforced the WIN rules. Her rules helped me mature so that I would be prepared to live well in adult life after high school.”

By Steven HoffmanStaff Writer

The underlying purpose of Kennett Run Charities has al-ways been giving back to the community by supporting orga-nizations like The Garage Com-munity & Youth Center.

In 2001, Mike Bontrager, the founder and CEO of Chatham Financial, and Mike Miller, a youth pastor at the Willowdale Chapel, saw a need for a pro-gram to help middle school and high school students in the area.

“There was a need for a place that kids could call there own—they needed a safe place,” ex-plained Bontrager.

They found a vacant car ga-rage in Kennett Square that was available to rent and could serve as the future home of the youth center. A small group of people did the renovation work on the building, while another group started planning the af-ter-school programs that would benefi t youngsters.

For Bontrager, the motiva-tion to help with the founding of The Garage Community & Youth Center was simply the opportunity to help youngsters in the area.

“I have a heart for kids, and it seemed like Kennett Square needed a place like this that could help these kids thrive,” Bontrager said.

The Garage Community & Youth Center was so success-ful and quickly became such an integral part of the community that within a decade there was a second center established in West Grove. Between the two

centers, more than 400 students pass through the doors each week for tutoring and mentor-ing services, enrichment ac-tivities, participation in youth groups, and more.

Through the years, Kennett Run Charities has been sup-portive of The Garage and its activities.

“A bulk of The Garage’s fund-ing comes from the support of local individuals and local or-ganizations. It’s all funded pri-vately. Kennett Run Charities has been a supporter of The Garage,” Bontrager explained.

for the help that it provides to dozens of organizations in the area.

“The Kennett Run has been good for two different reasons,” Bontrager explained. “The Ken-nett Run is well-publicized, it is well-run, and it’s just a lot of fun. It’s great for the town. But then there is the charitable foundation and the support that it gives to organizations that is just fantastic.”

Bontrager was the board pres-ident for The Garage for its fi rst decade, and while he no longer serves as a board member he is still an advocate and a donor to the organization. He is proud of the impact that the youth center has had over the years.

“It was a big step to start it,” Bontrager explained. “We did not know if we could build a funding base. But we felt like God was leading us in that di-rection. I’m still a donor, a sup-

porter, and a big believer in what they are doing.”

He and his wife have been residents of Kennett Square for the last ten years. Bontrager said that one of the great things about the town is its sense of com-munity. There is a very diverse group of people of all different backgrounds living together in the small town.

“The thing that I really like about Kennett Square,” Bon-trager said, “is that it’s not just a town, it’s a community. And people really care about that community here.”

One example of that caring is the large number of organiza-tions in Kennett Square that of-fer help to those who need it.

“For a town the size of Kennett Square to have the number of charities is extraordinary,” Bon-trager said. “It’s great to have all these organizations that provide help to those in need.”
