All the students from K-6 gather at the football field for races of varying length, softball throwing, and tug-of-war. It is a hoot to watch the kids as they compete. I had the joy of attending this year and watch our 1st grader granddaughter, Josie, get in on the action. The longest of the races is one lap around the field. The kids can sign up for whatever races they feel most confident about. Our Josie prefers the shorter races, but regardless of who is in the races, the crowd cheers for every competitor. As we were watching the kids run that full lap (400 yards) you can easily see which kids have exceptional running ability, and which ones have exceptional heart. Regardless of the order of finish, the crowds cheer. There were a couple of instances that had me thinking ourselves as Christians. You know, the apostle Paul had a great interest in sporting activities and he often compared our lives as Christians with athletic competition. As I watched those kids run, more than my joy of cheering with all the other families in the stands, I really enjoyed watching all these young students holler and root for their classmates. The first kid would cross the finish line and delight in finishing first, but then would turn and yell encouragement to the others, especially for the ones that were coming in last. And they would all hug and high five. It almost made a guy cry. As exhilarating as watching those kids cheer, more so was what happened in one race, the 400. One young fellow was leading with quite a lead on the kid in second and beyond. But with only a short distance to the finish line, he fell in exhaustion. He was clutching his chest and seemed to be in some pain. The boy who was in second stopped to help his friend up. The other kids kept running and passed them both. Finally, the fallen boy got up and finished the course. He came in second to last. The boy who had helped finished last. By stopping to help his friend, the boy who would have won came in last. I got to thinking – who really won that race? We’ve been watching the television series A.D.-The Bible Continues. It follows the events that took place after the crucifixion of Christ. Often times, both the Romans and the Jewish leaders make comment about ‘this messiah of theirs’ being dead. Story over. Threat over. Order restored. Why then, they wonder, are these follows of the ‘dead’ messiah still organized and ecstatic in spreading their good news? Even willing to suffer brutal treatment and death? The Romans and Sanhedrin had thought they won the race. But the winner was The One who came to earth and stooped to help the fallen, depressed, and down-trodden to finish their course, even if it meant He came in ‘last.’ At least, last in the eyes of the world. Their belief was that, since He was dead and they were still alive, they had won the game. With apologies to the French and George Carlin, au contraire, mon frere. No, it wasn’t The One who stooped to help those who had fallen, who was the loser. It was the ones who turned their backs on Christ, and continued running past The Truth, who lost. It is Christ who has taught that death is not the ending, but the beginning. It is Christ who taught, among other blessings, that those who show mercy will be shown mercy. Read all those blessings in Matthew 5, The Beatitudes. Do you ever feel like you are losing the race you are running? Ever feel like there is just too much pain to continue the race? Hear the Good News – Jesus stopped along His course of eternity to minister to the poor inspirit, that they may find the strength and encouragement to finish their race on earth, and be with Him in eternity. Pretty cool, when you think about it. May God richly bless you in your day. See you in church. Pastor Mark

The material is very easy to use, especially with Barbara Burt putting each weeks lesson in an individual folder and Ann Jackson for making sure each classroom has the needed supplies. Save June 20 for Ice Cream Social

Hello Chapel Friends! Here is a link to this year's Ice Cream Social Work Schedule!! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lTqKiCYbB8h2pTGRD3e74aQ8aRjtwC9XBaFiRTGJXcI/edit?usp=sharing

Our numbers are down,so we had to be creative with where we placed people. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE read the schedule carefully and if you can not be here to fulfill your duties, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE TO FIND YOUR OWN REPLACEMENT!! You might be on the list more than once, maybe even more than twice, so PLEASE look closely!! Also, in years past there has been a surplus of ice cream left over. This year, we are trying to eliminate that problem. BEFORE THE SOCIAL. CHAPEL MEMBERS CAN PRE-ORDER 6 QUARTS OF ICE CREAM. There will be a sign-up sheet in the narthex. Our guests who purchase a meal the night of the social will be able to purchase an UNLIMITED NUMBER OF QUARTS. After we are done cleaning up, CHAPEL MEMBERS CAN THEN PURCHASE AN UNLIMITED QUANTITY OFICE CREAM. THERE WILL BE NO ICE CREAM SOLD ON SUNDAY, JUNE 21 (the day after the social) as it is Father's Day. Please make your plans accordingly. If you have any questions, please speak to an ICS member. Thank you in advance for all your help! We would like everyone to wear their purple Chapel Ice Cream Social t-shirts again this year. It lets people know who to ask if they have a question. Please signup on the bulletin board by June 1 or contact Amy Bland. Cost is $9.50. The Ice Cream Social Committee - Matt & Ann Jackson Dale & Heidi Langenbau Rusty Brown & Kristen Rhodes

    Our Circle of

    Concern Bible School

Plans for Vacation Bible School are underway. The big event willbe Mon-Fri, June 8-12, at Chapel Church from 1:00-3:30 pm. Allchildren going into kindergarten and through sixth grade are welcome. As in previous years, we are joining together with the churches in Garwin. Unlike previous years, there will not be a Bible School program this year. Many exciting events are being planned for the entire week. The theme is Weird Animals. The children will explore Bible stories, participate in crafts, games, and enjoy snacks. Volunteers are still wanted and needed! We hope many children will attend VBS. Thanks so much for your help and support!

Director, Claire Handorf, 641-473-2909, [email protected].

Dear Parents:Get ready for a peek at the unique!

At Weird animals VBS, kids discover that Jesus love is one of a kind. Weird Animals is a habitat filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences. Games, crafts, Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the standout activities that help faith flow into real life. (Since everything is hands-on, kids might get a little messy. Be sure to send them in play clothes and safe shoes.) Plus, we will help kids discover how to see evidence in everyday life- something we call God sightings. Get ready to hear that phrase a lot. As stated earlier, everyone is welcome to come from 3-3:30 pm each day for the Celebration time.

Parents, grandparents, and friends are invited to join us in the Tail End Celebration each day at 3 pm.

Mark these dates on your calendar: June 8-12. The fun begins at 1 pm and will end at 3:30, call this number 641-473-2909 or email me at [email protected] to register your children for this VBS adventure. All children K-6 are invited. No preschool classes this year.

There will again be a bus provided to and from VBS: Garwin School leave 12:30 pm; Green mountain leave 12:45, VBS out at 3:30; Green Mountain arrive 3:45 pm; Garwin School 4 pm.

Yours in Christ, Claire Handorf, Your Weird Animals VBS Director

When registering include your childs name and grade going into next year.

Registration forms are on the back bulletin board. Give to Claire Handorf or bring on first day of VBS.

Memorial Day Service Sunday morning worship continued on May 24 with a memorial service to honor all of the veterans buried at Chapel Hill cemetery. Because of the rain, the nurturing committee had a very appropriate service in the sanctuary.

Bill Backoff told the history of Memorial Day. Chris Krull read "Have You Looked At a Soldiers Face? and encouraged each of us to thank a soldier. The soldiers present included Pete Hoing, Lynn Handorf, Dan Steen, Stan Koster, and Don Carlon. They each told their name, branch of service, and years of service. Lynn Handorf called out 35 veterans names, plus the unknown soldier. Family members came to the front to take a red or white carnation, which were provided by Lois Groth. At the conclusion, Phil Collins played Taps on his trumpet, and David Collins played the echo. This annual remembrance reminds us of the sacrifices of our veterans. Thank you to the nurturing/worship committee for planning the service: Tammy Burt, Ross Iverson, *Bill Backoff, Phil Collins and Linda Svendsen.

Participating in the Memorial Day service were these veterans (l-r): Stan Koster, Lynn Handorf, Pete Hoing, Dan Steen & Don Carlon. Helping with the program were Bill Backoff and Chris & Marci Krull.

Sarah Janet Squires Beane, 75, died on April 22, 2015. She was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on February 2, 1940, the second child of Richard and Janet Harris Squires. Until her teenage years her family lived in Gladwyn, Pennsylvania, then in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where her father took a teaching position, and finally in Ames, Iowa.

Sarah attended Haverford Friends Elementary School, the French high school in Addis Ababa, graduated from Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania, attended Oberlin College and obtained her degree in Physical Therapy from Washington University in St Louis in 1963.

Sarah worked as a physical therapist at several hospitals in the Minneapolis area before joining the American Friends Service Committee rehabilitation team in Vietnam in 1967 to work with civilian amputees during the war there. Later she opened new physical therapy departments in Ames and Manchester, Iowa. During these years her hobbies were singing and skiing.

Sarah married Daniel Beane on April 5, 1969. Their first two years of married life were spent in Manchester, Iowa where she established a physical therapy department. Then they returned to Dans family farm where she was active in the management and work of the farm.

Sarahs service to the larger community included serving on the regional board of the American Friends Service Committee, volunteering for Head Start, serving as 4-H club leader for the Marion Merry Maids and the Marshall County Mounties, being a spokesman for the American Soybean Association, leading as an officer for the Marshall County Porkettes, serving on the executive committees of the local and state boards of the American Association of University Women, helping as a regular volunteer at the Green Mountain School, being an officer of the OWO womens club and participating in the Marshall County Farm Bureau Womens organization. She was hostess to foreign exchange students and international visitors from many continents. Along with her husband, she shared in the leadership of several youth mission teams to Tanzania, Kenya, Bolivia and Belize. They also spent several winters serving at the Friends Theological College in Kenya and later at the Cayo Deaf Institute in Belize.

Sarah was a lifelong member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and was an active participant in the fellowship of the Gladbrook Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School pianist and teacher and was active in the Volunteers womens group. For many years she participated in the international Bible Study Fellowship.

She and her husband, Dan, established the Beane-Squires Scholarship for graduating seniors of the Green Mountain-Garwin school to recognize and encourage high moral standards among the students.

Sarah is survived by her husband, Dan, her daughter, Heidi (Brett) Koopman of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota and their two children Elijah and Gabriella, and her son Douglas (Heather) Beane of Sydney, Nova Scotia and their 4 children Hannah, Abigail, Saralyn and Christopher. She is also survived by her brother E. Chadwick Squires and her sister Barbara French. She was preceded in death by her parents Richard and Janet Squires.

A memorial service will be held in the manner of Friends at 3:00 PM on Sunday, April 26 at the Chapel United Methodist Church at 1597 Abbott Avenue, rural Gladbrook, IA.

Memorials may be directed to the Cayo Deaf Institute in Belize (with a notation on checks made out to Chapel Church) or the Friends Theological College of Kenya (with a notation on checks made out to Friends United Meeting).

  • UMWThe Chapel UMW met Thursday, May 7, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Karen Collins and Marcia Wiese presented the lesson on mothers around the world who are safe today because of our giving. As evidenced in the Biblical story of Mary and Elizabeth, we were encouraged to build friendships and support between older women and younger women.

Susan Beichley, president, called the meeting to order. Nine members answered the roll call by describing something their parents did for fun. The secretarys minutes from the December meeting and March Spring Breakfast were read and approved. Correspondence was read from Dan Beane, Leon & Carol Lamer, GMG Elementary School, JoAnn Neven, Judy Oswood, and Sue Koster. Shirley Svendsen gave the treasurers report. It was approved, and bills were presented.

Education and Interpretation chair, Karen Collins, reminded us that mothers often do the impossible! She also gave this thought: Life is made up of two dates and one dashMake the most of the dash.

Eight cards have been sent. Shirley Svendsen purchased a rose bowl for Dain and Tonia McBride.

For New Business, the monthly project was discussed. Kathryn Burt moved and Cindy Ormston seconded that we give a donation to the Storks Nest, which is a resource for young women. Motion passed.

Kathryn Burt was thanked for donating two drip catchers to use with coffee and cold drink containers for large gatherings.

Mission U will be July 19-22 and also October 16-18 at Iowa Valley Conference Center in Marshalltown. If anyone would like to attend, our unit will pay the registration fee. Janice mentioned that today was National Day of Prayer, and we needed to unite together to pray for our country.

The next meeting will be June 4 at 7:00 pm. Kathryn Burt and Carolyn Kloster will have the program; Karen Collins will give the Education & Interpretation report; and the hostesses will be Claire Handorf and Sue Koster.

Prayer requests were given. Carolyn Kloster and Connie Buchman served a delicious rhubarb dessert on tables decorated with flowers.
