This Conference will help you fulfill your commitment to being better citizens, it will help you connect with member from all over the world and of course make friends that you will care for each and every day whilst here and from each of your home communities.

The program of the conference is wide and varied and will allow you to focus on such elements as youth unemployment, corporate social responsibility and sustainability. You will have the opportunity to learn how partnerships can help you grow your JCI Local and National Organization. You can of course attend many learning opportunities through the JCI Official Courses as well as further Skills Development sessions, amongst many more different events packed into the conference all for you to develop further as JCI members.

Of course one of the most vital parts of this JCI European Conference is the social side of things, where you really get to know the other delegates. From the Opening Party to the Farewell Ball I can promise that you will have a great time and just remember to save some energy for the daytime activities too!!

You are at the last stop of a long journey that started as İzmir, signed in Monaco and promoted in Malta as Kuşadası and immediately after ended in İstanbul. It was an intriguing experience for me to watch this journey as a passenger. While we are at the last stop of this adventure,

it is my duty as a President to ask how your trip has been. JCI World Headquarters completed this voyage by deciding the itinerary on behalf of JCI Turkey, with a company.

In Turkey, Turkish Coffee is drunk after a long journey and get rest. Now that we are completing a long journey as a passenger, let’s come together and drink a Turkish coffee with a glass of cold water. Turkish coffee is a method of preparing unfiltered coffee. Roasted and then finely ground coffee beans are boiled in a pot (cezve), usually with sugar, and served in a cup where the grounds are allowed to settle. At present, it is found in the Middle East, North Africa, the Caucasus, the Balkans, Bali, and Eastern Europe. Turkish Coffee is an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Turkey confirmed by UNESCO.

On this occasion, I want to welcome you all to Turkey and wish you a pleasant time.

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to my hometown of Istanbul, Turkey! This is a very exciting time as we gather together for the 2015 European Conference. We have the opportunity now to join with each other as a diverse group of active citizens to learn, grow and celebrate together.

JCI Area Conferences are always a great opportunity to develop relationships with people from diverse backgrounds, learn from experts and fellow active citizens and experience the hospitality of a new culture. This year will be a particularly exciting European Conference as we join as a region to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the JCI Movement. Now is one of our chances to commemorate this year on an international level and recognize the founding of our great organization and its growth around the world.

I hope that you will take advantage of the opportunities available to you and make the most of the week. This will be an important time to further develop our strategies to accomplish the 2015 JCI Plan of Action and our long-term goal to be the organization that unites all sectors of society for sustainable impact. This course goes over the basic components of project management related to planning, executing and evaluating projects. Participants will develop their skills to create a project statement, define clear objectives, identify and target meaningful partnerships, plan action steps and evaluate a project’s success.

It is human nature to meet other humans for many reasons and at the local level of JCI, meetings have a great impact in decision-making and sharing experiences. However, as our world progresses, we need to rethink the way we conduct meetings at the local level. What this course proposes is that JCI Local Organizations must be creative when organizing meetings. Because each Local Organization is different and can change every year, Local Officers must decide what type of meeting is more effective for the members and the organization. On one hand, humans have a need to meet person-to-person, while on the other hand, innovations have proven that there are other ways of achieving the same results.

JCI World Public Speaking ChampionshipThe JCI World Public Speaking Championship offers members a unique opportunity to exercise and showcase their speaking abilities by sharing ideas on important local, national and global issues. A speech competition requires a special kind of public speaking, challenging participants to express creative ideas in a clear and captivating manner.

Public speaking is a critical skill of a leader who can motivate people toward positive change. Every well-prepared speech should have an introduction that captures the attention of the audience, a body featuring the speaker’s message, and a powerful conclusion summarizing the speaker’s arguments. The competition gives every participant a way to express his or her thoughts to others in an exciting and challenging way.

JCI TwinningThe JCI Twinning Program is a voluntary and reciprocal agreement between National Organizations or Local Organizations in different countries, regions or cities.

The motivation to twin originates from the members in two National or Local organizations who wish to establish a mutual understanding and friendship. The objective is to exchange personal visits, ideas, projects and culture. With modern communication and transportation systems, distance is no longer an obstacle. For this reason, twinning is easier now than ever. The program formally links two or more JCI Organizations and provides a framework for members to participate in other cultures. They forge diverse connections that provide a unique perspective on the increasing interconnectedness of our world. Caylan has worked for the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency since its establishment. Since then, Caylan has served as Project Manager for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and is currently working as the UN Coordination Specialist at the United Nations House in Ankara, Turkey as Head of the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator.

Ferruh Gurtas is the Corporate Affairs Director at Intel Corporation leading the regional team for Middle East, Turkey and Africa (META) since 2006. In this role he is responsible for government affairs, education, entrepreneurship and CSR programs in the region. In 2011 he took on additional worldwide responsibility as WEF (World Economic Forum) Partnership Manager in charge of Intel’s engagement with WEF around the world. He represented Intel Corporation at global entrepreneurship and education programs of US State Department and at Entrepreneurship Advisory Group of WEF for MENA region and he is a currently member of the advisory board of Business Angels Association of Turkey (TBAA). Ferruh Gurtas has a BSc degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Middle East Technical University, Turkey and MSc degree in Communications and Signal Processing from Imperial College, London.

Lawyer Barış Kaşka is the owner of Kaska International Law Firm. Kaska attended the Summer Program of Texas Law School in 2002 (Comparative Trial Systems, Direct & Cross Examination) and in 2003 graduated from Marmara University, Law Faculty. In 2004 he took “Law of European Union” master lessons at Izmir Dokuz Eylul University and was admitted to Izmir Bar in 2005. Kaska is a lecturer at Izmir University of Economics on International Trade and Business Law. He is also a registered representative of Patent and Trademark at the Turkish Patent Institute.

Kaşka is also the Aegean Region Dealer of Durance, which offers personal care, healthy living and home cosmetics products from the region of Provence in southern France and the partner of Moneba Green Hotel, a boutique hotel with 34 suites in the heart of Fethiye.

Before joining Nothing But Nets, Margaret ran strategic partnerships and was acting field director at the ONE Campaign covering a wide range of global health and poverty issues. She also worked with UNICEF in Botswana and as a consultant for the U.S. Coalition for Child Survival. She has a broad range of experience in issue-based and political campaigning, non-profit fundraising, and international development. She has two young children (with a third on the way!) so is particularly passionate about protecting children from malaria as no child should die from a mosquito bite.

Osman Parlak is the head of the index department at Borsa Instanbul where he has held the position since 2012. Parlak has been with Borsa Istanbul for more than 15 years holding numerous titles. Parlak launched the award-winning BIST Sustainability Index in November 2014. He currently leads the project that aims to change existing index calculation systems with NASDAQ OMX ICS2 systems. Parlak has a degree in Business Administration from Boğaziçi University and received his masters degree in Risk and Asset Management from EDHEC University in France.

Melis Abacıoğlu Sezener double majored in Mathematics and Art History at Colombia University in New York City, USA. 5 years after graduation, Sezener realized her passion for motivating people to get involved in sports. Sezener co-founded Hareket Candır!*, a non-for-profit sports-organization, with her husband as well as starting her own company Actifit, a corporate wellness firm that brings employees into action for a healthier life. Sezener is also the founder of Kızlar Sahada, a movment for women’s soccer in Turkey. Sezener is married to a wonderful man that continues to support her enthusiasm for sports.

Damla Taşkın is a consultant, trainer and speaker on private sector development, capacity building, government relations and sustainability. She started her career in the private sector in the textiles, telecommunications and electronics industries in Turkey, United States and the Netherlands. For the last 11 years, she has worked with the European Union and United Nations in various projects in Turkey, Kuwait, Egypt, Azerbaijan and South Africa. She was also the Director of İzmir ABİGEM (EU Turkey Business Centre); the first business support organization in its field. Taşkın was in charge of the United Nations Post-2015 Development Agenda— Engaging with the Private Sector, Turkey Consultations as well as the Turkey country report. She is currently in charge of Private Sector Development and refugee related-programs as Program Coordinator for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

Turkish CargoTurkish Cargo is at your service all over the world with a network reaching more than 260 destinations in 108 countries. Turkish

Cargo’s fleet consists of more than 255 passenger airplanes and 9 freighters and is one of the youngest fleets amongst the European carriers.

Turkish Cargo, a subsidiary brand of Turkish Airlines, has been able to maintain its ever-envolving and rapid development raising its cargo and mail shipment volumes to 567.771 tons in 2013 from 469.036 tons in 2012. On Friday 5 June, the annual JCI European Conference Soccer Tournament will be held. Teams will compete for the desirable European Conference Soccer bowl and title. Show your support for your country and region by cheering on the teams.

Conference BadgesYou will receive your conference badge when you register. Please make sure you have it with you at all times during the conference, including the farewell ball and 100th Anniversary Celebration. Without it, you will not be able to gain access to any of the Conference activities or evening parties. If you lose your badge, please report it immediately at the Registration Desk. A fee will be charged in case of lost badges.

LunchesYou will receive your lunch vouchers upon registration. The lunch vouchers you receive can only be used in the Istanbul Congress Centre (ICC) for beverages and meals.

LanguagesTurkish is the official language of Turkey. English is widely spoken in Istanbul however. Other commonly spoken languages in Turkey include French, Spanish and German.

Internet AccessMost hotels in Turkey offer Wi-Fi as well as the airports and local restaurants. Some locations may charge a small access fee. As registered delegates of the 2015 JCI European Conference, you can also use the free Wi-Fi at the Istanbul Congress Centre.

ElectricityThe electric current is 220V AC with a frequency of 50 Hertz. European standard plugs with two round pins are used.

CurrencyIn Turkey, the local currency is the Turkish Lira (TL). Foreign currency can be exchanged at the airport as well as at private exchange offices, which can be found throughout the city and are open from 08:30 to 20:00. In addition, Traveler’s Cheques and Eurocheques can be cashed at the local banks, which are open between 08:30 and 17:00. The major credit cards (such as Visa, MasterCard) are accepted in most Turkish restaurants and shops.

Cultural NotesIstanbul is both a historic and modern city and is most apparent in the city’s architecture and people. Istanbul has a multicultural feel and a vibrant atmosphere rooted deep in the past while looking toward the future; it is truly as much a crossroads of ideas and cultures today as ever. It is a city that is home to age old churches, mosques and synagogues all of which are in close proximity showing us the ability for a community to form from different cultures that live in a state of peace and tolerance stemming from a shared human past and belief in the future.
