irmingham, Alabama native GeorgeBarber modified, raced and maintainedPorsches in the 1960's (63 first-placewins). He started collecting andrestoring classic sports cars in 1989, buthis interest soon turned to motorcycles.Barber recognized that there was not amuseum which reflected the history ofmotorcycles from a global perspective. He wanted to preserve motorcyclehistory in the United States in a way thatrepresents an international aspect andto supply an example of motorcyclesthat until then could only have beenseen in books and magazines. This wasthe theme used in the mission anddevelopment of the Barber collection.

The collection grew with theassistance of skilled restorers thatworked for Barber at a secluded locationin Birmingham that once housed acommercial vehicle refurbishing facility.Out of the same shop a vintagemotorcycle race team operated with thechallenge of maintaining and racinghistorically significant machinery. Thesebikes were routinely campaigned aroundthe United States and Europe so thatthey could be enjoyed and appreciatedin their original setting, rather thancollecting dust in a garage. This racingeffort brought the Barber Team 7National Championships in the AmericanHistoric Racing Motorcycle Association(AHRMA) and helped secure a credibleplace for the collection in the communityof motorcycle enthusiasts.

In 1994, the Barber collectionbecame the Barber Vintage Motorsports

Museum when it was granted a 501(c)3not for profit status. On March 14, 1995,the museum was officially opened to thepublic in the original secluded locationon Birmingham's Southside. Themuseum operated here until November1, 2002. The Museum reopened at itsnew location at the Barber MotorsportsPark on September 19, 2003. Along theway vehicles from the museum’scollection have been featured in exhibitsaround the world. Twenty onemotorcycles were selected for the famedArt of the Motorcycle exhibit at theGuggenheim’s New York and Bilbao,Spain location as well as the FieldMuseum in Chicago. England’sGoodwood Festival of Speed hasfeatured cars from the Barber collection.Birmingham’s own Museum of Art hasconducted a special exhibit featuringmotorcycles from the Barber collection.

The collection now has over 1200vintage and modern motorcycles and aswell as a substantial collection of Lotusand other racecars. It is considered thelargest collection of its type in NorthAmerican and possibly the world. Thereare approximately 600 of the collection’s1200 motorcycles on display at anygiven time. These bikes range from 1902to current-year production. Bikes from20 countries represent 200 differentmanufacturers. The common street bikeis represented, as well as rare, one-offGran Prix race machinery. Bikes havebeen purchased from as far away asAustralia, New Zealand, and Sweden, but also as close as down the street.

For the past two years, Ryan Hunter-Reay has owned the Honda Indy GrandPrix of Alabama, winning both races andleading for more than half the total laps.In 2015, he’s looking for the hat trick.

Hunter-Reay, a Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.native, began his racing career behind

the wheel of a go-kart. He worked hisway up through Skip Barber Racing, andhe started racing in the IndyCar Series in2007. In 2010, he signed to drive forAndretti Autosport.

Behind the wheel of the No. 28 DHLHonda, he finished first at BarberMotorsports Park in 2013 and 2014, lastyear in the rain. But no matter thecondition, he said it’s one of his favorite

courses to drive.“I think it’s just the flow of it,”

Hunter-Reay said of his success atBarber. “You have to have a car that’s intune with what you need from it. If youhave that, then you have to get in tunewith track.

“Barber has some challenging slowsections, some tough technical sectionsand some really fast, high-committment

sections that offer a lot of reward forrisk.”

Besides that, he said it’s one of thebest tracks for fans on the circuit.

“Every year here, there’s some of themost passing we have on any roadcourse,” he said. “When you get a goodlap time out of a car in qualifying or inthe race, it’s tough to do it over and overagain.”

Charlie Kimball:

Dealing with diabetes

at 200 mphBy JEFF [email protected]

A few years ago, Charlie Kimball was the featured guestat an event at Barber Motorsports Park hosted by a localdiabetes awareness organization. He had lunch withthe group, gave a quick speech and showed offhis Indy car. After that, he sat down to signautographs, and a woman approached him.

“I don’t need you to sign anything,” she said.“I just wanted to say thank you.”

Her son, like Kimball, had recently been diagnosedwith Type-1 diabetes, and the diagnoses crushed him. Hewanted to play baseball, but decided with all the nutrition, hydration and blood sugar management required for someonewith diabetes to play a sport, it wasn’t possible.

The woman said her son heard Kimball speak about his ownstruggles with the disease that day, about the blood-glucosemonitor he keeps on his steering wheel that’s connected to hisbloodstream while he’s on the race track. She said her son leftmotivated.

“Just after you finished speaking,” the woman told Kimball,“he asked me, ‘Mom, can we stop by the store on the way homeand get a glove?’”

“I hadn’t had a good qualifying lap that morning,” Kimballsaid, “but after that it didn’t matter. That just made my day.”

Kimball was diagnosed in 2007 at 22 with Type-1 diabetes. The diagnosis came as he was rising through the ranks towardIndyCar competition, and it caused him to miss part of theseason. He said at that time he really didn’t know much aboutthe disease, but the diagnosis was terrifying.

“I didn’t know if I’d ever get back, but I’d fallen in love with

racing and I wasn’t going to letthe diagnosis keep me from trying,”he said.

Kimball worked with a team ofdoctors and specialists to figure out atreatment regimen. He learned how tomonitor his blood sugar, and he now takesinsulin injections three or four times a day.Soon after, he was back on the track, and in 2008he became the first licensed driver with diabetes towin a race in the Verizon IndyCar Series.

Now, he drives the No. 83 car for Novo NordiskChip Ganassi Racing. During the Honda Indy GrandPrix of Alabama, his Chevrolet Aero kit will have acouple modifications that you won’t find in his

competitors’ cockpits.First, among the many

readouts featured on hisdashboard, Kimball has one that

shows him his blood sugar. The monitoris connected to a needle that’s inserted

beneath the skin while he races. In addition,Kimball has two bottles he can drink from while

driving — one with water and the other withorange juice.

“It’s something I deal with every day,” he said, describing how he monitors his blood glucoselevels. “If I saw my lap times changing, I’d tell theteam to check the tire pressure. If I see my bloodglucose levels drop, I just drink some OJ.”

Kimball said he’s looking forward to his returnto Barber, which he described as one of hisfavorite tracks on the circuit.

“To be honest, Mr. Barber did such a nice jobjob,” he said. “It’s a great, technical layout fordrivers high-speed straights that slow intoconnected corners then into tight, low-speed hair-pins. It’s challenging for the engineers, but manyof the drivers love it.

“The best thing about Barber is that if youdrive it well, it will reward you with good results.”

IndyCar DriversBarber from the Driver’s Seat

James Hinchcliffe“From a driver’s point of view,

the track is amazing. All theelevation and blind corners arewhat makes it great for a driver. Itreally lets us stretch our legs inthese Indy Cars. It’s super hard ontires, which is bad for us, but it’sgreat for you guys because itmakes the racing better wheneverything goes off the rails.”

Ryan Hunter-Reay“There are a lot of corners that

are falling away and depressions,so the cars vary in grip level. It cancatch you by surprise. It’s alsoone of most physical tracksbecause of the G-loading. Somecorners are almost 4Gs, and wedon’t have power steering. All thatmakes it really tough, really toughto get consistent lap times out ofour cars.”

Josef Newgarden“First off, Barber is in a great

area. I love Birmingham; I lovecoming to Alabama. And I lovethis circuit because of some of theways that it’s built. It’s a fun, fast-flowing track that’s very difficult todrive. It’s a technical, twisty trackthat’s always moving. I think ourtop speed is 180 mph, and thelowest is turn 5 at about 60 mph.”
