2015 pREviEw: LANCERS pREp foR hiStoRiC 50th SEASoNGrace’s men’s soccer team will

kick off its 50th season of competition on Tuesday at Miller Athletic Complex.

While the Lancers are replac-ing eight graduated seniors from last year’s 9-7-2 team, the 2015 squad is brimming with young, exciting new talent.

Eighth-year head coach Matt Hotchkin has led Grace to the NCCAA National Championships twice in the past four seasons. While he admits the Lancers will be young this fall, he maintains the talent is there to make a run in the Crossroads League.

“This will be an exciting year, but it will have its share of challenges,” Hotchkin said. “I think our overall mo-bility is better than last year. We have more speed and better fitness on the team. The key will be to see if that translates to better soccer.”

Over half of Grace’s roster is com-prised of new faces (12 of 23), but the returning players have a strong level of playing experience and poise. Senior captains Kyle Hamlin and Justin Festa headline the returners.

Hamlin has racked up 19 goals and five assists in his career so far and hopes to cap off his playing days in style. After working tirelessly in the offseason, Hamlin is now “a more complete player than he’s ever been,” according to Hotchkin. “He’s faster and stronger than he’s ever been; this could be a really good year for him.”

Festa was an All-Crossroads League defender in 2013 and helped the Lancers to six shutouts last fall. The

athletic center back anchors a robust defensive line. Also returning with Festa are seniors Nakilee Weni, Dylan Andersen and junior Jonathan Sands. Festa and Weni form “one of the best center back tandems in the league,” in Hotchkin’s view. Incoming freshman defenders Nikola Djordjevic (Serbia) and Josiah Osborn (Argos HS) have impressed Hotchkin already through the preseason.

The midfield unit replaces the graduated steady trio of Trent Smith, Nikola Blazic and Gift Sibukome. Jon Christensen and Hector Torres plan to fill that gap as the most experienced returners. Hotchkin believes the Lanc-ers can take the next step if Chris-tensen and Torres display consistency and mental toughness in the middle.

Newcomers Daniel Smith and Colin Cape have showcased good vision and distribution from the middle, according to Hotchkin, providing a good rotation of players.

The attack will be centered on Hamlin, but freshman Damon Bin-kley (Argos HS) and senior Dominic Harris figure to be key contributors as well. Harris is a “powerful player who is hard to stop when he’s on,” in Hotchkin’s words, and Binkley is a natural goalscorer. Binkley was an All-State forward from Argos, graduating as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 130 goals.

Hotchkin has helped Miller Athletic Complex become a formi-dable home atmosphere for visit-ing teams, and that home environ-

ment will be tested early and often in 2015. The Lancers have a sterling 26-6-4 mark at home since 2011, including last year’s undefeated 7-0-2 record. Grace welcomes traditionally tough opponents Indiana Wesleyan, Taylor, Spring Arbor, Bethel and Mt. Vernon Nazarene to its home turf this fall, pro-viding a number of important matches on Grace’s campus.

Grace figures to look vastly differ-ent on the pitch this fall, but Hotchkin believes the team can overcome its youth. The key, in his words, is to stick together. “I like the camaraderie of the team and the cohesion so far. We are a young team who hasn’t faced any type of adversity yet, so we will have to learn how to respond to both adversi-ty and success. If we stick together, we could surprise some people this year.”

GRACE LANCERS 2015 MEN’S SOCCER

Matt Hotchkin enters his eighth year as the head coach of the men’s soccer team at Grace College. Hotch-kin has continued the great tradition of the men’s program, building it into a respected and competitive force in the Crossroads League.

Hotchkin has imprinted his style of play on Grace soccer, resulting in one of Grace’s strongest periods in recent memory. Before Hotchkin’s arrival, the Lancers had not reached the NCCAA National Champion-ships since 2002. But the Hotchkin-led Lancers have advanced to NCCAA Nationals in two of the past four seasons.

He has also recruited talented players to bring into Grace’s program, including a pair of first-year Lancers who tallied 10 goals in 2011 (Altimus, Barthuly) and another who was named the 2012 Crossroads League Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman (Fiema). Prior to Hotchkin bringing in Fiema, Altimus and Bar-thuly, only one other Lancer over the previous 15 years had reached 10 single-season goals (Joe Kateule).

Under Hotchkin, the Lancers have posted a winning season in three of the past four years, including last year’s 9-7-2 mark. Hotchkin has helped make the newly renovated Miller Athletic Complex a formidable home atmosphere. Since 2011, Grace is 26-6-4 at Miller Athletic Complex (.778 winning percentage). The Lancers went undefeated at home in 2014 with a 7-0-2 record.

Hotchkin’s dedication to academic excellence has resulted in the Lancers becoming consistent earners of the NAIA Scholar Team dis-tinction (averaging over a 3.0 GPA as a team). In 2012-13, the Lancers finished the year 10th among NAIA men’s soccer teams with a combined GPA of 3.23.

In the summer of 2012, the Lancers embarked on a sport mission trip to South Africa under Hotchkin’s leadership. Grace’s players were able to share their faith in the midst of training with and playing against local talent.

“Our goal is to win, while at the same time, striving to keep our values and our mission in place,” Hotchkin said. “We want men who are serious about their faith in Christ, serious about life, serious about soccer, and at the same time, know how to have a great time.”

Prior to coming to Grace College, Hotchkin served as the head men’s coach at Northland International University (Dunbar, Wisc.) from 2003-07. While there, he led the men’s program to five consecutive regional championships, two NCCAA National Championships, and was named Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2007.

Hotchkin graduated from Bob Jones University (Greenville, S.C.) where he earned a degree in Bible/religion with a minor in history. He holds two Professional Development Certificates along with a National Diploma from the NSCAA.

Hotchkin and his wife Jennifer have been married for 14 years. The couple has two boys (Will, Matthew) and one girl (Lily). The family resides in Warsaw, Ind.

ASSiStANt CoACh JoE kAtEuLEJoe Kateule enters his ninth season as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer team and 10th overall, serving as an assistant for the women’s team for a year. Kateule is a 2005 graduate of Grace College, where he was a two-time NC-CAA All-American player in 2003 and 2004. Kateule, who also served as team captain, finished his three-year playing career in the top 10 of Grace’s all-time leading goal scorers (33 goals). He graduated with an undergraduate degree in general business and business administration and went on to obtain a master’s degree in intercultural studies.

Kateule brings a different perspective to the Lancer bench having coached soccer at numerous youth levels in Lusaka, Zambia, for Ambassadors in Sports in Ohio, and for Soccer Extreme in both Connecticut and Massachusetts. Born

and raised in Zambia, South-Central Africa, Kateule represented his country on multiple occasions in the Southern African regional soccer competitions while playing club soccer as an amateur in the Zambian league.

ASSiStANt CoACh AuStiN ALtimuSAfter wrapping up his playing days for the Lancers in 2014, Austin Altimus will transition to the sidelines as an assistant coach this fall. Altimus was one of Grace’s top goal scorers during his career from 2011-14, racking up 22 goals with 12 assists. He also produced five game-winning goals, including two game winners as a senior in 2014.

He notched a personal-best 10 goals as a freshman, needing just 21 shots on goal to reach that mark. In 2011 Altimus scored three goals in three matches at the NCCAA National Championships, including the game-winning strike in the 88th minute against Southwestern Assemblies of God. In 2012 he scored a game winner in the 89th minute against Crossroads League foe Mt. Vernon Nazarene. He also assisted two game winners against Huntington and Indiana Tech.

ASSiStANt CoACh CoLLiN CoNECollin Cone will begin his first season as an assistant coach for the Lancers in 2015. Cone is far from a stranger to Grace, however, after concluding a standout goalkeeping career in 2012. As a senior, the All-Conference goalie posted seven shutouts in the regular season to propel the Lancers to a third-place finish in the Crossroads League. Overall, Cone registered a 23-16-7 mark in goal for the Lancers. He made 203 saves in three seasons and had 15 shutouts in his career.

During Cone’s junior year, he was honored nationally as the NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week. He also won three other Player of the Week honors for the Crossroads League. The Lancers advanced to two straight NCCAA Na-tional Championships during Cone’s final two seasons, marking Grace’s first back-to-back appearances since 1982-83.

ASSiStANt CoACh NikoLA bLAziCNikola Blazic will return to Grace’s men’s soccer team as an assistant coach in 2015, fresh off a standout career with the Lancers. Blazic, a native of Zrenjanin, Serbia, was a mainstay in Grace’s midfield during his four years. He finished his career with five goals and 11 assists. Three of his five goals were game winners, including two as a senior in 2014.

He made a name for himself immediately on Grace’s campus by tallying three assists in his first collegiate match against Andrews. He ended the year tied for 10th in the Crossroads League with five assists.

Blazic enjoyed a stellar senior season in 2015. He drilled in a 23-yard free kick in double overtime to defeat St. Francis, and his penalty kick in the second half sealed a comeback win over Moody Bible.

BLAKE FRASURMANAGER

GRACE MEN’S SOCCER - 50TH SEASON CELEBRATIONCalling all Grace Men’s Soccer Alumni! The Lancers are enjoying their 50th season in 2015, and you are invited to join us for a celebration.

Grace’s men’s soccer program will have a special weekend to commemo-rate its historic 50th season on Sept. 25-26.

“When I think of 50 years for Grace Men’s Soccer, I think about all of the individual players that made up those teams. I think about the highs and lows, the glorious victories and the difficult defeats and lives changed by circumstance and friendship,” said Grace head coach Matt Hotchkin. “Finally, I think of how God has used Grace Soccer to shape and refine young men over the years. In the span of 50 years, a legacy has been built by every player, manager and coach that made up those teams. I hope to see men from every era of Grace Men’s Soccer here for the reunion, reminiscing and sharing stories from their time at Grace.”

The Lancers boast one of the most storied teams in the NAIA. Grace has racked up 450 wins since its inaugural season in 1965, 6th-most among current NAIA programs.

Grace’s first team was coached by Chet Kammerer in 1965, marking the first full season of competition. The 1966 team, coached by Rich Krieg-baum, played Grace’s first intercollegiate schedule with a record of 3-4-1.

“The gigantic growth of soccer throughout the US perfectly matches the growth of our Grace soccer program. Our early teams showcased stars like Bob Dowdy from Argentina and Jean Pierre Makeiff from France who had experience and skill. But most of our team members had never played a minute of soccer before suiting up for the Lancers,” said former Lancer player and coach Steve Grill. “Determination, grit and athletic ability were the early hallmarks of our Grace teams. Today, the Lancer stars have been playing soccer their entire lives, and they bring remarkable skill sets to the pitch. I’m looking forward to connecting with some of the old-time Lancers that I played with and coached.”

The 50th year will be celebrated during Grace’s Homecoming weekend on Sept. 25-26. A number of soccer-specific events will be included during Homecoming festivities.

“We are very excited to celebrate the rich tradition and history of 50 years of men’s soccer at Grace,” said Grace athletic direc-tor Chad Briscoe. “We look forward to the return to campus for many alums and hearing the stories of Christian excellence through Grace Soccer from the past 50 years.”

Commissioner Tom Seitz | www.crossroadsleague.com

The newly named Crossroads League (CL), formerly the Mid-Central College Conference, underwent a name and logo change in the summer of 2012, but its values remain the same. It is the purpose and function of the CL to promote intercollegiate ath-letics in a well-rounded athletic program. The CL seeks to main-tain high ideals and to promote sportsmanship and a friendly understanding among member colleges.

The Crossroads League is a 10-institution athletic conference in the NAIA. The CL offers 15 year round sports throughout Indi-ana, Michigan and Ohio. The league will continue to be a pioneer

in academic excellence, competitive athletics and a faith-driven focus on and off the field.

The CL consists of 10 colleges and universities: Bethel College (Mishawaka, IN); Goshen College (Goshen, IN); Grace College (Winona Lake, IN); Huntington University (Huntington, IN); Indi-ana Wesleyan University (Marion, IN); Marian University (India-napolis, IN); Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (Mount Vernon, OH); University of St. Francis (Fort Wayne, IN); Spring Arbor University (Spring Arbor, MI); and Taylor University (Upland, IN).

“We like to see other schools come and stop at the field, brush their foot on the grass, and reach out and touch it. Grace’s soccer field is kinda sacred ground right now.”
