Built in 1936, our Ice Rink is the only refrigerated, NHL regulation, outdoor ice rink in New Mexico. Tucked against the canyon with a backdrop of pine trees, the Ice Rink offers public skating, hockey, and skating lessons from November through February. Whether it is stunning winter skies dotted with fluffy white clouds, or night skies filled with twinkling stars, the Ice Rink is where you and your family can enjoy an unforgettable skating experience. Being an outdoor rink means adverse weather such as snow, sleet, rain, or warm weather, may force the Rink to close with short notice. Dress warm, in layers, and call the Rink or check the website for ice conditions.

Open Space & Trails Lying on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.

The canyons and mesas in and around the county are linked by a 58 mile network of trails. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety of trails from which to choose. The trails offer a quick escape from the hectic pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.

Areas to Explore

Central to the community, Pueblo Canyon holds a network of trails that are easily accessible from the Aquatic Center and Kinnikinnik Park and from downtown and North Community. Many of the trails follow a bench just below the canyon rim and easy walking. The historic Ranch School Rail drops 400 feet and leads to the canyon bottom. Orange volcanic cliffs make this canyon one of the most picturesque locations in the county.

Bayo Canyon separates North and Barranca mesas. Easy trails follow the bench just below the canyon rim, and the Bayo Canyon Trail heads to the canyon bottom where there are extensive stands of old-growth ponderosa pines.

East of Downtown, two universally-accessible, hard-surface trails follow the north and south rims of Los Alamos Mesa. Both trails have a 10-foot wide asphalt surface that maintains a grade of less than 5%. From East Park, the Los Alamos Mesa Trail heads along the rim of Pueblo Canyon for about a half mile, offering colorful views of the canyon. East Park is also the western trailhead for the 1.5-mile Canyon Rim Trail. A second parking area is located 1.5 miles to the east on New Mexico 502 (East Road) on the south side of the highway. This trail winds a scenic route through open woodlands and features a 300-foot long bridge that overlooks Los Alamos Canyon.

Along the Western Perimeter, the Quemazon Trail area features a nature trail, a historic road, and rim trail with wonderful views. Download a trail guide for the Quemazon Nature Trail at the Trails page on the County web site. The guide was developed and designed by sixth-grade students at Mountain Elementary. For a longer and scenic route, take the Satch Cowan Trail along the rim of Los Alamos Canyon. The Mitchell Trail provides entry to the Perimeter Trail, which encircles North Community.

The Eastern Mesas are long fingers of rock that reach out toward the Rio Grande valley. A loop trail on Deer Trap Mesa and the out-and back Kwage Mesa Trail are scenic routes that end at spectacular viewpoints overlooking much of northern New Mexico.

A local favorite hiking destination is White Rock Canyon. The canyon is 900 deep feet from the rim to the Rio Grande. The attractions are the river, the springs, the rocks-basalt lavas oozed from the volcanoes of the Caja del Rio Plateau-and the hundreds of petroglyphs that adorn rocks in the canyon. Two trails lead to the river, the Red and Blue Dot trails, and both are steep and rugged. On the edge of White Rock a rim trail offers easy access to views into the canyon.

Want suggestions for a hike? Trail descriptions are available on the County web site under Visitors/Open Space and Trails. Also, trailhead brochures are available for each of the major trailheads in the County. Each brochure has maps and detailed guides for three trips that begin and end at trailhead. Pick up trailhead brochures at the Aquatic Center, the lobby of the Municipal Building, the Chamber of Commerce, or download them from:

http://www.losalamosnm.us/parks/trails/Pages/LACTrailNet.aspx

Looking for a Trailhead? Watch for the “Trailhead” signs along major roads throughout the county.
