A Message to Friends of Wellspring On behalf of the thousands of individuals and families whose lives were transformed through Wellspring Family Services in 2015, I want to say thank you.

As a donor, volunteer, or friend, your involvement is helping Wellspring bring about powerful change for families today and for generations to come. Your ongoing generosity means Wellspring can continue to serve vulnerable families, individuals and children in Seattle and King County by offering a range of services aimed at addressing the root causes of family instability and crisis. On the back page of this report, we’ve included our program’s statistics and results from last year – and here are some highlights.

In 2015, your loyal support helped Wellspring:

• Welcome families experiencing homelessness and help them move into a safe and stable home—and then equip the parents with the skills and support they need to build their resilience to move forward

• Leverage breakthrough scientific discoveries around brain science and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) to better help parents strengthen their children’s development and break harmful intergenerational cycles

• Seek proven solutions to the issue of family homelessness, because when everyone has what they need to thrive, our community is at its strongest

Thanks to you, these efforts continue to gain momentum in 2016. And there’s more to tell. Turn the page and see the legacy of powerful change you’re helping create every single day.

With continued gratitude,

Ruthann HowellCEO/President

The Face (and grateful heart) of a WinnerEvery morning when the sun came up, Leonard gave thanks for his new job. Yet, clouds of self-doubt persisted: “Will I ever have a place to call my own, a place where I could have my two teenage sons with me?”

Resilient and determined, Leonard came to Wellspring. Case Manager Bryan Wilson welcomed him with a warm smile and a listening ear. “Leonard was for real – honest, hard-working, and needing assistance to carry him through that little in-between time called first-month rent and deposit.”

“I’d been looking for a permanent place to live for two months,” says Leonard. “When Bryan told me the move-in date to my Lake City apartment, I was so happy – for me and my boys.”

But the story gets better. Leonard’s new employer held a contest drawing – grand prize $500 to the non-profit organization of the employee’s choice. Care to guess who won?

What Leonard chose to do with the prize stopped a few people in their tracks.

He chose to give every penny of the $500 prize to Wellspring. And once his employer learned that Leonard had received services from Wellspring, they generously doubled the gift amount!

“In my time of need, Wellspring really came through for me. Today, things are going very well. I look back, and without Wellspring, I would have been stuck. I just wanted them to use the money to help someone else. It makes me feel good to know they will.”

Three Priceless Words Raise Awareness and FundsMeet six-year-old Maya. Her parents, Suzanna and Asa, had been involved in Wellspring’s Baby Boutique, a free store which offers clothing, diapers and other essential items to families in crisis.

One day they brought Maya to Wellspring to show her where they were donating her outgrown clothes and toys. They wanted her to see and take in the daily challenges of children, moms and dads affected by homelessness.

Something stuck, because Maya began collecting change for Wellspring’s child philanthropy campaign, Kids Helping Kids.

Says Suzanna, “She saw that she could channel her desire and do something to make a productive contribution.”

Recently, Maya and her parents began talking about homelessness. Their daughter didn’t blink. She simply found a piece of paper and expressed her feelings in three honest words: Homelessness bothers me.

Maya wanted to sell 50 t-shirts with her three-word message on the front and give the proceeds to help kids impacted by homelessness.

Result: 80 total shirts generated $2,000 in donations for children and families in need.

“It’s easy to underestimate seven-year-olds,” says Suzanna. “Maya and her first-grade friends have big ambitions to change the world for the better. And as parents, we hope that thoughtful giving will continue to be part of her life as she moves through this world.”

Well-spoken words of a parent whose daughter’s three priceless words raised some valuable new awareness and needed funds.

Bryan and Leonard (holding his prize check).

Our 2015 financial results reflect a decision on Wellspring’s part to maintain critically needed services, in spite of a revenue shortfall caused when expected public sector funding did not materialize. With our Board’s direction, we have a strategic plan in place to reduce 2016 expenses without affecting service outputs, and to invest in our development team to increase revenue and thereby build up our financial reserves. We are confident this responsive plan will leave us in a strong position.
