Our MissionAs a reflection of God’s love and in partnership with the community, Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna seeks to create homeownership opportunities by building, renovating and repairing homes.

Our VisionHabitat for Humanity Susquehanna’s vision is to eliminate substandard housing in Cecil and Harford counties through action and advocacy.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORThis was a very good year at Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna. We served more families. We built more houses. We repaired more homes. We welcomed more volunteers. We participated fully in our Harford and Cecil communities, and we are grateful for the opportunity to do so.

But it wasn’t a good year everywhere. Coming out of the Great Recession, income inequality is up, job growth is weak, and homeownership rates are declining. Working families are stretched to the limit. Families need protection from income insecurity, eroding safety nets, and declining opportunity.

The local answer to these woes is our nonprofit, where hard work is rewarded, pennies are managed frugally, and family futures once again look bright. Habitat families work very hard to budget their funds, build good credit, and then work hundreds of hours in construction – just for the chance to pay a mortgage. In return, they receive a modest, energy efficient, long lasting home in which they build equity as they build their family’s future.

In the pages of this calendar, you will see some of the faces of volunteers, homeownership and repair families, and a thank you to each one of the many contributors that made it possible this past year. We know 2015 will be another good year, and we hope you will continue to be part of the Habitat family.

Thank you for your support,

Future

“I didn’t see any way out. I never thought that I could ever own a home. I am so thankful to Habitat for providing me with the opportunity to purchase a safe and stable home for my children.” Putasha Head, Habitat Homeowner

Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna breaks the cycle of generational poverty by helping families achieve their dream of homeownership. Last year, Habitat homeowners saved $464,017 over paying market rent. This allowed families to save for education, transportation, and retirement. Each homeowner also saw an increased net worth of $462 in just one year. With a hand-up from the community, the financial burden is lifted and Habitat Susquehanna homeowners can plan for a brighter future.

Love

“Words cannot express my deepest heartfelt gratitude to each and every volunteer who worked to make my dream come true. I feel like I have been given the beautiful gift of a place to rest my head and put my heart.” Linda Holmes, Habitat Homeowner

Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna seeks to put God’s love into action by building homes, communities and hope. This year we served 48 families and, along the way, they discovered not only God’s love, but the community’s love as well.

Hope

“This has lifted such a huge burden from our family. It was impossible to keep up with the expenses of everyday life and a son in college. I was drowning in a sea of desperation when Habitat threw me a line and rescued me and gave us hope of living an affordable lifestyle.” Adrienne Brooks, Habitat Homeowner

In addition to actively constructing their own homes, partner families complete four financial education classes plus a first-time homebuyer course. This year, Habitat families spent over 226 hours in classes and performed over 3,250 hours in sweat equity. They work hard to change their course and improve their own lives.

“Habitat has a powerful mission that provides deserving families a sense of ownership and pride. I have watched families work hard, hope deeply, and connect strongly with the community. I never take the front door of my own home for granted since I started volunteering for Habitat.” Peggy Hart, Habitat Volunteer

Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna volunteers help to make homes affordable. This year 2,052 volunteers contributed 16,803 hours. Of those volunteers, 1,757 were on the construction site, 88 helped in the office or at an event, and 207 were part of a committee. Volunteers are the core of the organization, allowing Habitat Susquehanna to better serve the community.

Opportunity

“It was a privilege for Lennar Homes to partner with Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna and use our collective skills and expertise to make a lasting, positive impact in the lives of two families, as well as the greater Aberdeen community.” Rod Hart, Division President, Lennar Homes of Maryland

On June 2-6, 2014, Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna partnered with Lennar Homes of Maryland and their trade partners to construct two new homes in just four days as part of National Home Builders Blitz. This donation, valued at over $150,000, ensured that two families reached their dream of homeownership. Thank you, Lennar Homes of Maryland!

Community

“We are gaining new family and friends with each step, and we help other partner families as God would want us to do. Through classes and mentorship, we have gained valuable knowledge that we will carry with us throughout our lifetime and share with our daughter.” Cara Middendorf, Habitat Homeowner & AmeriCorps VISTA

In fiscal year 2014, Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna was blessed to work with an AmeriCorps VISTA who focused on Habitat’s Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI). Adopted in 2010 to address increasing challenges in the communities, NRI serves families by responding to community desires and empowering residents to become involved in their neighborhoods. Through this program, Habitat Susquehanna served an additional 50 families, identified 14 new partnerships, had 28 events and recruited 23 new volunteers.

Faith

“The faith community is at the heart of our builds and God is at the center of our work. Faith communities inspire individuals to go and serve, help find families who need homes, and support the work of the organization financially.” Reverend Shannon Sullivan Pastor at Presbury United Methodist Church and Member, Board of Directors

All faith backgrounds are welcome to be an integral connection to help put our faith into action. Each day on site, in the office and at events, we reach out in kindness, reflecting God’s love to build up our community.

Stability

“Habitat is going above and beyond for us, and we truly appreciate it. I would have never been able to finish this project without them.” Ray Weatherington, Habitat Repair Family and U.S. Marine Veteran

Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna provides a hand-up, not a hand-out. Partner families help build their homes and work alongside volunteers. Habitat Susquehanna not only partners with families, but the community as well, and together they work toward a better future. This year 120 groups volunteered, including 96 business groups and 24 church and civic groups.

Tithe

“Going to Kenya with Habitat Susquehanna was one of the greatest experiences of my life. It was great to see how we can come together despite our differences, when we have a common goal of building homes, community, and hope.” Jackie Shaffstall, Habitat Volunteer

Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna recognizes the need for affordable housing not only in its own service area, but throughout the world. This past fiscal year, HHS tithed $19,297.83 to our affiliates in El Salvador, Kenya and Malawi. Habitat International has built affordable housing for more than 3 million people worldwide.

Family

“I firmly believe that family is an important part and center of my life. Not only do I have a strong, beautiful, and loving family, but I now have a new path toward a new beginning, new hopes, new dreams, and a HOME I will call my own.” Nirza Montalvo, Habitat Homeowner

When Nirza Montalvo found herself living in an unsafe and crowded environment that affected her health, she reached out to Habitat for help. With her family by her side, she confronted her abusive relationship and prayed for change. Nirza’s dream was to open the door to a home that was filled with not only furniture but love, laughter and dreams. A year later, Nirza achieved her goal of homeownership and her family continues to forge new memories in her Habitat home.

Pride

“Habitat went out of their way to help, despite what little money I had. I no longer have to stay inside. I can go outside whenever I want and enjoy the garden and watch my two children ride their bikes.” Habitat Repair Family

Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna not only provides affordable housing, but also keeps low income families safe in their homes through the Repair Program that provides critical repairs, weatherization and accessibility. Since its inception in 2008, the Repair Program has served 259 low-income homeowners in Cecil and Harford counties with 306 repairs. This year’s highlights include 49 completed repairs.

Memories

“Habitat offered me a hand–a helping hand. They worked with me, guided me through the steps I needed to take to confront and amend my past financial mistakes—the steps I needed to take to truly be independent.” Heather Naulty, Habitat Homeowner

As each family steps into the home they helped build, they begin making precious memories. The road to homeownership may be long, but they find “there’s no place like home.” With 265 families served since 1993, we offer our families the chance to build lasting, cherished memories.
