Welcome to the 7th edition of our annual Bull Sale Catalogue and the 1st edition of our “Pick of the Pen” Bull Sale. What can a person say about the cattle market this past fall? I think several words are applicable like WOW, UNBELIEVABLE, and IT’S ABOUT TIME! To everyone who hung onto the cow’s tail long enough, give yourselves a pat on the back because you have persevered through historically tough times and are now reaping the rewards. Will markets stay this high indefinitely? Probably not, but only a few years ago $1000 calves seemed like a pipe dream and it now looks as if that could be our new basement price! These certainly are exciting times to be a Canadian Beef Producer. We have ten 2 year old bulls representing the top 40% of our 2013 born bull calves for sale. These animals have met our strict “no excuse” culling program. We cull for conformation, temperament, and performance. In the past we’ve described our bulls as being raised on a high roughage diet. Through conversations with fellow producers, I feel we need to make the distinction that not only are our bulls raised on a high roughage diet, they are raised on long stem hay and pail fed their grain/concentrates. This diet allows our bulls to grow more naturally creating a bull with longevity, few health issues, and a quiet disposition. Fat looks good, wins shows, and hides a lot of imperfections, but seldom is it functional. You will find our bulls to be in good body condition and very athletic as they walk pastures all year round. Please note we have a different format for our sale this year as compared to years past. This year we are having a “Pick Of The Pen” online auction for all the 2013 born bulls listed for sale in this catalogue. Please read the Online Auction, Online Bidding, as well as the Terms/Conditions sections in our catalogue for an explanation of how the new sale format will work. Thank you for your interest and support of our program!

Since we began our Purebred herd back in 2007, we have sold by private treaty. Although we have been pleased with the results, one of the more difficult issues we have encountered with private treaty sales is deciding who gets first pick from our bull pen. After much consideration, consulta-tion, and many sleepless nights we have decided to host an online auction.

This is not a decision that we take lightly, as we appreciate the support of our customers from years past and look forward to continuing those relationships into the future. In fact not much will change as you can still expect high quality functional bulls with excellent customer service.

Our goal with this sale format is to make every bull available to all of our customers, whether they be longstanding or simply discovering our program for the first time.

Three afternoons have been set aside for bull viewing. Drop in Feb. 14, 17, & 20 from 1-4pm at the farm. The bulls will be penned for easy viewing and we will be available to answer any questions you may have. If you are unable to visit on any of these days, give us a call and we will find a time that works best for you to come and view the bulls.

Online bidding will begin at 5:00pm Friday February 20, 2015 and close out on Sunday February 22, 2015 at 9:00pm

MST (Alberta Time). You can view the auction at www.32auctions.com/pickofthepen2015.

AUCTION PARTICIPATION

If you are uncomfortable or unable to participate in our online auction please contact us as you may leave a sealed proxy bid with us (Lust Farms). Please be assured that we will not disclose any of the information we collect to anyone outside of Lust Farms.

We will create an online account for you (eg. Customer 1), enter your bid(s) as per the instructions you leave on our Proxy Bid form, and monitor your account on your behalf. All sealed proxy bids received by Lust Farms will be opened and entered at the start of the sale (5:00 pm MST February 20, 2015) in the order in which they were received.

SIXM 245Y Reg. #1634753 March 1, 2011

We tried to purchase Infiniti’s sire back in 2010, but fell short. Luckily Infiniti came along with a very similar profile to that of his father. When combined with the fact that he has a moderate BW and a rate of gain near the top of what Six Mile had to offer, it made him an obvious choice. His dam is another phenotypic gem as she was part of Six Mile’s show string. Bull Calves avg. 91 lbs BW—644 lbs WW Heifer calves avg. 86 lbs BW—613 lbs WW

Havoc is an ET bull that we had our eye on. His sire is known for leaving structurally correct cattle with good performance, and Six Mile describes his dam as “having a stunning phenotype with picture perfect udder structure”. We are excited to see what our first heifers out of Havoc will do for our program as they have their first calves this coming spring! Atlas is a very stout made thick bull with excellent structure and a very sound foot under him. His dam is a cow that we absolutely love. The maple leaf in his pedigree indicates 3 generations of Canadian genetics and just to give him that something a little extra, his WW & YW EPDs are in the top 3% & TM is in the top 20% of Red Angus bulls in Canada. Alley hands down is our best two way bull prospect. His EPDs combined with his modest 70lbs BW makes us believe he will be a light BW easy calving bull for use on your larger heifers. I believe his best quality though is his phenotype. He is smooth through his neck and shoulders for easy calving, but has the length of body and depth in his flank to use as a herd sire on your mature cows!

www.32auctions.com/pickofthepen2015 7

Ramira 8T was an in dam purchase going back to the original set of cows we bought from L4 Ranches. Abel is simply a solid bull that will do a good job without the extremes. He is missing part of his tail due to it getting stepped on as a yearling. Luckily that won’t affect his progeny!

For those of you familiar with last year’s sale bulls you already know 103W is a home raised, large scrotaled, performance sire that can hold his own against any bull out there! Argo is a bull that shows good performance and whose dam is phenotypically beautiful. Combine her structure with that of Havoc and I think Argo is a herd bull I would look to retain heifers out of. His WW EPD is in the top 10% & TM is in the top 25% of Red Angus bulls in Canada.

Amigo is the third consecutive bull calf out of our only Sakic daughter 942W. Amigo was a standout as a calf and weaned off with an incredible 726 pound weaning weight, making him our highest gaining calf for 2013. Pictured is Atticus’ half brother LFA 222Z. 222Z is out of the same dam as Atticus and a bull we retained for in herd use. If you believe your herd sire should come out of a great cow, Lass 81T fits the bill. An Elite dam, she has had 6 calves index 106 at weaning and her bull calves index 119 as yearlings. Admiral’s dam is one of the original Pound Maker cows we purchased from L4, and what a cow she has been. She just does not miss, consistently raising calves that rise to the top. She is also the dam of our Norse Prince 103W bull! Admiral’s moderate BW combined with above average weaning and yearling weights makes him a definite herd sire prospect.
