The Hon . Dame Jennifer Smith, DBE, JP, DHu mL, led the Ber mudaProgressive Labour Party to two general election victories on November

9, 1998 and July 24, 2003. Her service to Bermuda and its people wasrecognized in the June 2005 Queens Birthday Honours, when she was

made a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE).

The let ter s DHu mL beh ind her name stand for Doc tor of Humane Let -ters and indicate the three Honourary Degrees which she has receivedfrom the Art Institute of Pittsburgh (her alma mater), Pittsburgh, USA;Morris Brown College, Atlanta, Georgia, USA; and Mount Saint VincentUniversity, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Dame Jennifer is the recipi-ent of many other awards, including the Woman of Great Esteemaward from Q-Kingdom Ministries, New York, USA; and a special awardfrom the National Congress of Black Women, Inc., Washington, D.C.,

USA.

Dame Jennifer has proven time and again, the importance of persis-tence during the seventeen years (1972 to 1989) and six attempts thatit took her to win election in the Constituency of St. Georges North;which she changed from a United Bermuda Party (UBP) stronghold to aProgressive Labour Party (PLP) stronghold. (The change to a single seatconstituencies has seen St. Georges North become a Marginal constituen-

cy.)

Dame Jennifer has gained a wealth of experience in her thirty-oneyears (December 1980) as a Parliamentarian. The youngest women everto run in a general election when she made her debut in 1972 (fouryears after universal adult suffrage was implemented). Dame Jenniferserved as an appointed member of the Upper House, the Senate, fornine yearsduring which time she established herself as an effectiveand articulate spokesperson for the PLP and earned a reputation for

diligence and the rest is history
