Please note that Safe Guide compliance is part of all of our activities! That’s why it is a mandatory ses-sion for all Guiders within your first 6 months – actually counted from the day you first apply to be a lead-er. This session is devoted to understanding our responsibility as Members of GGC in ensuring safety while managing risks in activities. We’ll explore the contents of the document – you don’t need to know it all . . . you just need to know what to look for and where to find it! This session is geared to assisting you with that! All sessions help you to have fun. Training will introduce you to the characteristics appropriate for the girls’ ages and the program for each level Spark, Brownie, Guide, Pathfinder or Ranger . It is an invaluable tool to assist you in your chosen branch. Building Your Unit Guider Skills session will give you the information you need to successfully run your unit – girl centered programming, working with other Guiders, keeping the unit a safe place, diversity and inclusiveness. A must for new Guiders! All training builds our own skill levels and gives us a chance to share with others while encouraging us to step out and try new things. Together we learn and grow. Trainers will come to your District to give sessions to you closer to home. Contact the training committee at [email protected] to book a training day for your District! Be sure to give about a month’s notice so the best trainers can be found for your sessions. Happy Guiding.

Day trip – September 26 or 27, 2015 – pick one // Rain date is October 3 or 4

Calgary Area third annual canoe day at Westover Lake will take place in late -September, 2015. It was very popular last year. We may have to limit registration this year to stay within the capacity of the site.

Learn canoe strokes; practice embarking and disembarking from a canoe; experience canoeing on Westover Lake with qualified canoe personnel on hand. Your group will be given a minimum 1 hour time slot in the canoes plus dry-land time to organize life jackets etc.

Westover Lake is a Calgary Area Girl Guide Camp, about 30 km west of the Calgary City limits on Hwy 1 at Sibbald Flats. It is a wilderness site, with very little in the way of amenities –i.e. no shelter from the rain (or snow). There are tenting sites, picnic sites, sheds for food storage, camp fire rings, latrines, canoes, life jackets, paddles, lots of trees, the small, sheltered lake and that’s about all. It is a half hour hike from the parking area to the camp site. THIS IS BEAR COUNTRY, so appropriate wilderness behavior is expected.

To make it a full day, bring your lunch and drinking water; plan some extra activities such as shelter building, outdoor cooking, nature walks and compass work. Anything other than canoeing will be up to the individual units to plan and organise.

Backpack Camping for the weekend at a Westover Lake camp site is an option, but it is your responsibility to organise the camping and submit the usual GGC Safe Guide paperwork. This is wilderness camping.

There is a small fee of $6 per girl to cover expenses for the event and a crest – to be paid in early September.

For more information and to pre-register please contact Susan Ryan, Silverbirch District Camping Adviser [email protected] or phone 403-281-8211. If you have any questions feel free to ask so we have a chance to clarify.

Final registration will occur in early September. Notice will appear in Calgary Area e-news or direct-to-you if you pre-register.

Register early to ensure your Unit’s place in the schedule.

Anyone (girls and adults) wishing to participate in canoeing MUST have either their “swim test for boating” or “swim

test” registered with iMis. An explanation of these tests can be found in Safe Guide at http://forms.girlguides.ca/
