“One day I undertook a tour through the country,

the diversity and beauties of nature I met with in this charming season,

expelled every gloomy and vexatious thought”.

- Daniel Boone

Tour for the children is very useful and instructive, It is during these tours that the

children add to their knowledge of places and people much better than they get

through books. Moreover, these tours save life from becoming dull. Tours are,

indeed, a part of education and a very necessary part.

The tour is a fun - filled experiences, it is an opportunity for students to have a jolly

time together. For some time they can forget about classes and homework and

exams. The travel by bus with children singing songs and making merry while

indulgent staff look on, is an unforgettable experience. The saddest part is coming

back home to the same old routine.

All of a sudden the children dream of tour came real on 20th September 2014, while

children had their quarterly exam holidays. The staff members of Hariksha Learning

Centre are also joined together in this trip (this helps us to share the expenses).

HARIKSHA

HOME for Adult Mentally Retarded Women

(Funded by State Commissioner for the Differently Abled Welfare, Tamilnadu)

The new initiative of Hariksha People’s Welfare Trust is the Home for the Mentally

Retarded above the age of 14 years for the Girls to provide vocational training with

residential facilities with sanctioned strength of 40 girls from Villupuram District.

We applied for the Government Scheme of the Homes for the Mentally Retarded

Girls above the age of 14 years. The State Commissioner for the Differently Abled

Welfare Department considered our application and sanctioned the scheme to our

organization to serve the Villupuram District.

The Government of Tamil Nadu is empowering and providing equal opportunities

and participation for the person with disability. It assure livelihood security, equality

& full participation in community life and more independence, autonomous life skills

and comprehensive medical services, vocational trainings to make the disabled

person valuable and a part of this society. The Government also provides an

Page 68: 2015 | Anuual Report

opportunity to the NGOs to work as a joint venture with Government for the disable

rehabilitation, to take suitable measures to provide equal opportunities, ensure full

participation and protect the rights of the disabled people.

Through our working experience and field visit we found that the adult girls above the

age of 14 years are the major victims of abuses (physical & sexual). Most of them

are neglected, many of the parent relatives don’t have facilities to treat or train them

properly.

As soon as we got the information letter from the Government to start the Home for

the Mentally Retarded Girls, we met the District Differently Abled Welfare Officer

(DDAWO), Villupuram. As per the guidance of the Government and DDAWO,

Villupuram we searched a suitable house. The proposed location for the home is

Gingee, so we went around the village to find the house. As we are planning to start

the home for the special need children, many of the house owners are not willing to

offer their house for this purpose. Finally we found a house No. 4, 3rd Cross Street,

Kalki Nagar, Tindivanam Road, Gingee, Villupuam District, Pin–604202

With the available resources we started to establish the needed infrastructure for the

home for the special need. We established the kitchen, the mat, pillows, pillow

covers, the basic furniture and we are trying to find out the appropriate staff

candidates.

Apart from this we have to ensure the minimum standards and facilities to the

residents of the home. A few examples are that we have to ensure the safe drinking

water (purifying system), a washing machine to wash the clothes of the special need

girls. The house has to protect with mosquito net for protection the residents from

mosquito and flies. To keep the house clean and hygene special arrangements and

equipment for cleaning.

The kitchen has to equip with the Gas stove, Wet Grinders, Mixer Grinder,

Refrigerator and many other equipment.

As this is the residence of the special need girls we have to arrange the

entertainment activities such as television, audio player, indoor and outdoor games,

etc.,

In this way many other needs are there to establish in this home, the Government is

firm on its budget that it will support only the basic facilities and running cost of the

home, this amount will be available after we spent the money (minimum 1 year). So

to initiate the progress and process of the home we are in need of the generous kind

philanthropist support. As your concern is already supporting our organization and

you are well known about the quality of service of Hariksha and its approaches we

are requesting to explore the possibilities to take part in the initiative expenses and

progress of the establishment of the Home for the Mentally Retarded Girls.
