PALISADES VILLAGE n Annual Report 20152

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Palisades Village had a successful year in 2015. Operating Income of $178,521 was approximately $10,000 over our budget and Operating Expenses of $156,506 were approximately $12,000 less than budget. On a fully allocated basis we finished 2015 with a $22,015 surplus and we had Cash on Hand of $177,960.

We also had a successful staff transition with Peggy Newman’s retirement as Executive Director and Andrea Saccoccia taking over in June. In addition, Jean Boland left in September as Office Manager and Volunteer Coordinator and was replaced by Jacqui Sjoberg. Jacqui will be leaving this coming June and is being replaced by Erica Leighty Blanton, who has already started taking over some of Jacqui’s hours.

At the Annual Meeting held in December 2014, the members approved the restructuring of dues with the objective of increasing membership so that the dues revenue will equal half of the annual income. Dues in 2015 were $62,200, about 36% of revenues and 40% of operating expenses. The higher dues structure has not negatively affected membership. The loss of a small number of members was consistent with annual attrition rates.

Our third Annual House Tour was a success with a great turnout and total revenue of $33,815. The Progress Report and Annual Report produced contributions of $34,781. Individual Con-tributions, Gifts in Kind and Business Contributions totaled $14,433. Foundation Grants to-taled $11,700 and Board Member Contributions totaled $10,400. Member and Social Events produced $4,4604, which covered 75% of the cost of those events.

Palisades Village conducted our first online survey of Full Members, Associate Members and Volunteers over the summer of 2015 to inform a strategic planning process which we completed in late December. We began offering more social and educational events as a result of the survey findings including informational workshops related to Aging in Place, brain health, estate planning, health care, technology classes and drivers training. Our members had opportuni-ties to attend private tours of museums and gardens, walk along the canal and enjoy concerts. Village members were invited to many social events including a summer BBQ, Oktoberfest, and theme-centered parties. Many of these events were catered by our very own Palisades Pan Handlers, a talented group of volunteer gourmet cooks.

The strategic plan, which involved a six-month effort with all board members, focuses on ma-jor goals to strengthen the Palisades Village community, increase membership, raise funds and enhance the effectiveness of the Board and Staff. In the plan, the Board also committed to creating an endowment to ensure the financial viability of Palisades Village for the long-term.

I want to especially thank all of our volunteers without whom there would be no Palisades Village. We look forward to a year of growth and achievement in 2016. With sincere apprecia-tion for your support,

Philip H. Potter President

The thing I love most

about volunteering is

the people I meet

and hearing about

the lives they’ve lived.

Village members are

so interesting and

so very, very nice.

I’m always surprised

to hear of their many

talents and their

adventures. We end

up talking about so

many things, from

history to current

neighborhood needs.

Yes, its people are

the best part of our

Village!

“I wanted to go to a wedding but I was worried that due to health reasons I could not make it through the whole service; The wedding was so very meaningful to me, enabling me to witness the marriage ceremony of my dear friend and visit with friends that I haven’t seen for many years. With-out your (Palisades Village) excellent assistance, I would have missed a truly remarkable wedding! I couldn’t have gone without Ada. Ada was truly remarkable; she was thoughtful, generous and kind.” ~ Liz

“After my wife died, I didn’t think I could live alone. Thanks to you and your wonderful volunteers, I know I can. I can continue to enjoy doing the same things I did before. My friends at Palisades Village visit me, take me to social events and we share a meal together. It’s a great organiza-tion. Thank you! ” ~ Sandy

“I received such exceptional service that was above and beyond my expectations. I couldn’t make it to the doctor’s without Janet’s assistance. She drove me, helped me with my bags and filling out the forms. It made such a huge difference; making the seemingly impossible, possible. Thank you so much. I truly appreciated her help.”~ Mary

THIRD ANNUAL HOUSE TOUR - OCTOBER 17, 2015

Palisades Village

held its third

annual house

tour on October 17.

The event was a resounding success

featured eight superb houses. The

blustery weather did not deter over

300 ticket buyers from enjoying a great

variety of architecture, style and design.

The tour featured: a remodeled cen-

ter-hall brick colonial; a Victorian

gable; an updated split-level; a Sears

bungalow; a Japanese-styled tea house;

and, several mid-century moderns.

Our community of real estate firms and

agents, local businesses, volunteers,

and many more dedicated neighbors

all came together to orchestrate a

flawless tour. St. Patrick’s and St. David’s

churches also played key roles as venues

for tickets sales and our reception.

Importantly, Palisades Village raised

a record amount of money to support

our services to our over 220 members.

Palisades Village is especially grateful to

its 2015 house tour chair, Karen Schaar!

How You Can Help

We are saddened by the loss of Ben Rowland, who served as a board member of Palisades Village from 2010 to 2015. Ben was a gradu-ate of Yale University and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.Ben worked for 15 years on Wall Street, and held leadership roles at both the Inter-Amer-ican Development Bank and the World Bank. An avid watercolorist, he was also a political scholar, world traveler, writer and most of all loving family member and friend. We are grateful for the energy and service he offered to Palisades Village. He will be missed.
