Mission

Pajama Program provides new pajamas and new books to children in need nationwide, many of

whom are waiting to be adopted. These children live in group homes, shelters and temporary

housing facilities and are shuffled often from one place to another. Many of them have been

abandoned, abused or neglected. Most of these children have never enjoyed the simple comfort

of having a parent tuck them in at bedtime with warm, clean pajamas and a bedtime story. Some

of the children are living with their families below the poverty level, in desperate need of food,

clothing and shelter. These two simple gifts of pajamas and books let the children know that

someone cares - sometimes these are the only new things they have ever received.

Pajama Program operates three Reading Centers:

New York, NY, Yonkers, NY and Red Bank, NJ.

Around the U.S. our local chapters have now

begun organizing reading groups for children

served in their communities. Reading sessions

focus on extended learning time and include our

community reading volunteers. Under normal cir-

cumstances, these are children who, if read with on

a regular basis, will stay in school, keep up with

their peers in classroom work, and graduate high

school.

Pajama Program’s reading sessions are organized in groups of 5-20 children. We read with and to the children individually and also in groups of 2-5 children per volunteer/staff at a time. The reading sessions last 45 minutes each. This is followed by snacks, and then the distribution of a new book packaged with a new pair of pajamas, for each child. Giving these children their own books offer them a continued early reading experience. Our books and reading time serve the added role of providing a resource for bedtime stories by staff – or parent - an important element in fostering a nurturing climate for the children.

Reading Centers

“For a troubled child living in an institution far from home, it is the ‘little things’ that help calm fears and sadness. Sharing a quiet moment with a caring grown up, sharing a story with a happy ending, snuggling in cozy pajamas at the end of a long day – these are the gifts of our friends from Pajama Program. Our children are very grateful, and so are we.” — Nancy Ment, President, Andrus Children’s Center, Yonkers, N.Y.

Our Programs

Sweet Dreams

Sweet Dreams focuses on providing new pajamas, new books and reading sessions with groups of children in need all over the United States.

Bedtime On-call

We answer requests from children’s group homes, shelters and hospitals to set up reading programs on-site with the children in their care.

Pajama Program’s Reading Centers

Hundreds of children each year attend our reading sessions at our centers to practice their reading.

Share & Care Events

These are special events where we invite career role models to speak to and engage underserved children ages 10-17 about potential career paths.

Money Matters for Teens

This series gives teens a very basic understanding of general finances and provides an introductory program on budgeting, balancing a checkbook and other finances that can change these children’s lives.

Poetry Plus

This series encourages young girls who have been removed from a family/home environment to talk about their feelings through poetry reading and writing. This Program is designed to reinforce feelings of well-being and self-confidence and to strengthen their belief that with enough support and encouragement, these young women can move mountains.
