The Doors of Koinonia are Wide Open

President and CEO Chairman, Board of Directors

In 2015, the legacy of Koinonia, which means community, fellowship, and inter-connectedness with the surrounding communities in which we live and work, continued. Although we have been dedicated to those principles since our inception, we strive to see our work and the challenges in our field with new eyes. As our programs evolve, we continue to be highly successful in serving people with complex needs in both residential settings and in our day and senior programming, as well as in our employment services.

However, we are driven to innovation at an even faster pace as our regulatory environment reshapes our service delivery system, posing greater challenges. We find ourselves called to walk through new doorways to greater connection to and involvement in our local communities. This involvement comes in the shape of collaboration – across geographical boundaries, between and among other private agency providers in the developmental disabilities field, with for-profit companies and non-profit civic and human service organizations, and with governmental agencies. All in the name of meeting the changing and expanding community needs in Northeast Ohio.

Fifty percent of our new program enrollees are on the autism spectrum, a significant difference from just a few years ago. Health issues are significant, as over 60% of those we serve have 5 or more chronic conditions. Many people have lived in our beautiful homes for years and are aging in place. Others are seeking competitive employment for the first time in their lives.

We approach those we serve as we always have, meeting their physical, mental, behavioral, and emotional needs, and their preferences and desires. Tailoring our partnerships to support them in reaching their hopes, dreams, and goals, we have often asked ourselves, “If we choose not to serve this person (because of the challenges we might face in providing services), who will?” That is our calling.

Leaving their homes daily, the individuals we serve cross thresholds that lead to activity, growth, and learning that expand their personal boundaries and provide the quality supports that they need and enjoy. Meaningful work, internships, job coaching, volunteering commitments, attendance and participation in community, civic, sporting and religious events, and outings with family and friends await them.

What does this demand of us? A continued commitment to our mission, our vision, and to building and expanding our organizational capacity, energy, and zeal to accomplish the great things that lie ahead.

Creating opportunities...Enriching lives

What does it take to live a happy life?

We asked those we serve what they think it means to achieve a healthy, fulfilling, and enriched life.

“Being able to spend time with my friends. I also enjoy going for walks, listening to music and dancing.”

- Joyce

“Being able to spend time with people who are important to me, and doing things that I enjoy - like shopping, getting a make-over, or going to church.”

- Debbie

“I work hard, and I like to work hard. I volunteer too. It’s important for me to help others.”

- Jamie

“Having interesting places to go like the Auto Rama car show. I like to meet new people and explore new places.

- Thomas

“You keep a job and better yourself to meet your goals – that’s what I’m doing. I want to make a better person out of myself.”

– Juanita

AWARDwinning

employeesAsk any of Koinonia’s 500+ employees why they work here, and the answer will always be the same - because they believe they are making a difference in the lives of people who have developmental disabilities, and because they are passionate about fulfilling our mission.

President & CEO Diane Beastrom (left), and Chief Administrative Officer David Laubenthal, are ready to host the employee award celebration.

Koinonia celebrates individual and team accomplishments and recognizes employees for their years of service annually. A number of special awards are given including the most prestigious Founders Award.

In 2015 the recipients of the Founder’s Award were Direct Support Professional (DSP) Judy Perry and Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional (QIDP) Mary Hardwick.

Judy Perry joined Koinonia in 2008, and has proven to be a tireless advocate for the people she serves. Always putting the needs of the individual first, she listens carefully and determines how she can assist. In addition to the Founders Award, Judy was one of eight DSPs recognized by the Ohio Provider Resource Association (OPRA) for “helping to make a real difference in the lives of real people.” Judy has completed the Certificate of Initial Proficiency in the DSPaths program.

Mary Hardwick has been with Koinonia since 2011. Mary puts her talents, knowledge and skills to practical use daily and participates in Koinonia’s Behavior Support Committee and the Human Rights Committee. She has earned both DSPaths credentials – the Certificate of Initial Proficiency, and the Certificate of Advanced Proficiency, as well as a certificate through the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals.

In 2015, the President’s Award was created to honor an employee who has profoundly impacted the agency mission, practices, and results. The inaugural winner of the President’s Award was Lina Monteleone Workman.

Lina has made significant contributions during her 20-year tenure as she advanced through multiple roles. She has developed a depth of knowledge that she displays in the Director of Intermediate

Care Facilities (ICF) position she holds today. It is certain that Lina will impact Koinonia’s future for many years to come.

In addition to the Founder’s Awards and the President Award, Facilities Manager Nelson Cook and Program Manager Michelle Moore received Unsung Hero awards recognizing their service excellence, achievement, and positive impact on those we serve.

Many employees are very worthy and deserving of recognition, accomplish great feats in their daily work, and choose to work in the field of developmental disabilities amid many career options due to their connection to our mission.

Although a certain few are recognized, many are nominated and our entire talented workforce deserves our appreciation.

Highlights

Panelists ranging from a small neighborhood business to both regional and national chains, shared their real-world experience on hiring people with disabilities at the 2015 Employ-ABILITY Summit.

“There’s many advantages to hiring individuals with disabilities. The diversity and inclusion that it brings to your business is a huge advantage.”

- Duane Rohr, CVS Health

“Giant Eagle has been hiring people with disabilities for over 30 years. Once you get over the fear, and once you start thinking about people’s abilities and not disabilities, everything else is much easier.”

- Jeremy Shapira, Giant Eagle

“In all honesty sake, I have nobody with a learning disability that works for me. They might when they walk through the door, but I can tell you right now they don’t have a disability when it comes to doing their job.”

- Gary Pelligrino, Sr., Natural Essentials

New Residential SolutionsCollaborated with the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities (CCBDD) and the Warrensville Developmental Center to open a new home for three individuals who had been living in an institutional setting for up to 30 years. Today, all 3 people are successfully enjoying life in their new home.

Advocating on behalf of a parent who was looking for placement for her son, Koinonia partnered with CCBDD to create a new supported living setting that was previously a private residence. Today, the home is occupied by three individuals who have complex medical needs and is staffed 24/7 by Koinonia associates with special attention by our nursing staff.

Outcomes InitiativeAligned with several lead agencies across Ohio in a Quality Indicator Pilot, which is an initiative of the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities. Each of our program areas are collecting data which highlights the ways people we serve are engaged in the community with staff support. The data is shared with the Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) and other participants to assist with future policy and strategic planning for ser-vice delivery.

Employment Collaborative of Cuyahoga CountyCreated strategic alliances with other employment service organizations that enabled job seekers to take advantage of shared resources between mul-tiple agencies. Through the Collaborative, job seekers will have access to a much larger network of employment opportunities. The Collaborative offers employers direct access to talent through a single point of contact, including pre screened applicants for a wide variety of industries.

Northeast Ohio Regional Employment NetworkServed as a Planning Partner for the Employ-ABILITY Summit. Leading area employers, including CVS Health, Natural Essentials, Giant Eagle, The Lin-coln Electric Company, Marriott International, Key Bank, Cleveland Clinic, and Forest City Enterprises attended the inaugural event at Corporate Col-lege East. Other Planning Partners included the Cuyahoga, Stark, and Sum-mit County Boards of Developmental Disabilities, the Ohio Association of County Boards, and OhioMeansJobs/Cleveland-Cuyahoga County.

Nursing Student Internships

Internships for nursing students from Notre Dame College, Ursuline College, and Cuyahoga Community College were conducted at Koinonia to introduce the healthcare needs of people who have I/DD into the educational experi-ence.

Workforce ManagementWe implemented new time, attendance, and scheduling software which integrates with our payroll software and provides a more robust reporting capability. It also provides management with integral tools for managing payroll costs, allows employees greater time-keeping efficiency, and reduces administrative time required for payroll preparation each period.

Recognized by ERC as one of North-east Ohio’s 99 best places to work. NorthCoast 99 showcases businesses that have implemented “best-in-class” programs in the areas of compensation and benefits; recruitment and selection; training and development; community service; communication; and workplace health and safety.

“That’s what brings me back every day, seeing people make accomplishments and…knowing I was able to help them get there.” - Jessica Taylor

Jessica Taylor started as a residential supervisor working directly with clients in their homes. In her current position as Community Resource Manager, she’s getting those clients out and about in the community.

Keynote speaker Duane Rohr from CVS Health (left) and Ara Bagdasarian, President Board of Trustees for the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities (right) are ready for the Summit.
