Dear HIOBS Friends, Out in the field, we have a mantra which ultimately encourages students to avoid their biggest regret, which is to look too far forward and miss the wonders of the here and now. Live for the moment, we urge; Be present. As American Playwright, Tennessee Williams, said years ago, “Life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quickly you hardly catch it going.”

There is both a richness and a risk in focusing on the present: the richness of savoring that very moment when life happens versus the risk of missing a fleeting mark on the horizon which may lead to future opportunities. Sometimes, we get lucky and our life’s path closes in on that mark; yet the journey is the destination.

This past year, I lost my mom, the same mom who 33 years ago encouraged her son to go on an adventure in Maine on a small, open pulling boat to get his head out of what “could be” and instead to see “what is.” For her, it wasn’t about getting her son a leg up on his peers by going to lacrosse camp or focusing on SAT prep, but instead ensuring that he take the time for an inward journey towards self-reflection and compassion. She took a risk on her son’s future to let him be present in the here and now and to allow him to know who he actually was.

This year’s Annual Report is dedicated to all those parents of teens, spouses of veterans, adults in transition, and others who see the same things my mom saw. Discovering the art of simply being present, in the here and now, with those who surround you on an Outward Bound course, is a fleeting, learned and wonderful gift. In doing so, HIOBS students, like me, realize who they are, what they’re made of and more importantly, who they can be. Thank you, Mom.

Serving with you,

Eric DennyExecutive Director

In recognition and appreciation of enormous contributions to HIOBS, Clay Fowler received the 2015 Distinguished Service Oar Award at the Annual General Meeting on September 12, 2015.

cultivated by the course and our instructors allowed the group to open up and seriously take a hard look at ourselves. I have yet to experience anything quite like it.

Would you recommend Outward Bound to a friend?

Yes, I really believe that it changed my life.

This was one of the best experiences of my life. We conquered so much and I pushed my comfort zone. Truly an amazing experience.

Yes, it was an awesome time.
