On the Cover: The picture was taken this April in the Kings Point section of Kingwood, close to Riverwood Middle School. There is usually a nice bluebonnet display every Spring. It is a popular spot for local residents to visit and take pictures of kids in the flowers, just like Brenham. I try to stop by a couple mornings each Spring for a photo shoot. This year I was trying to isolate a single bloom using a shallow depth of field. I wanted other blooms in the frame for color but further from the camera so that they would be in soft focus. Ive taken many bluebonnet photos over the years. This is the first time I ever noticed the small spots of pink color in the center of the flowers. Not sure if all bluebonnets have this characteristic or not. Scott Meyer, Kingwood Photo Club

    locationLocated in the northeast quadrant

of the Houston metropolitan area, just 20 miles north of Downtown Houston on Highway 59, the Lake Houston Area includes Atascocita, Humble, King-

wood, Summer Creek and portions of East Montgomery County, all of which are currently experiencing robust pop-ulation and economic growth.

Encompassing nearly 100 square miles of land in northeast Harris Coun-ty, the area is largely forested. Due to its natural beauty, the recreation of Lake Houston and the San Jacinto River, the proximity of Bush Intercon-tinental Airport and the Port of Hou-ston, and the quality of its many sub-divisions, the area has proven to be a strong attraction to newcomers. With developments like Generation Park and Grand Texas Theme Park coming to fruition the Lake Houston Area will continue to prosper for years to come.

access Eleven lanes of Highway 59 flow to

    and from Downtown Houston, includ-

ing one HOV lane for multi-passenger vehicles. The Sam Houston Tollway allows motorists to quickly travel 13 miles from US 59 near George Bush In-tercontinental Airport to just past US 90. Grand Parkway Segment G is sched-uled for completion in late 2015. Seg-ment G spans east to west to connect I-45 and I-69/Hwy 59. As construction of the Grand Parkway continues as the fourth loop around Houston, the Lake Houston Area will enjoy more connec-tivity to the citys major thoroughfares and added mobility for our growing communities. Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houstons primary airport is just seven miles from Humble. Rail service runs through the Lake Houston Area linking the region to the Port of Houston and Galveston.

expansionOver the past several years, the

Lake Houston Area has experienced an uptick in commercial developments.

  • Area Historyname came not from Humble Oil Company, as newcomers to the area often believe, but from a vagabond fisherman by the name of P.S. Pleasant Humble who wandered into

the area in the late 1850s and settled along the banks of the San Jacinto River with his wife and family. Humble Oil Company got its name from the town near its most famous discovery, not the other way around.

Uncle Plez, as Humble was called, operated a ferry on the San Jacinto River near the present crossing of Highway 59. After a flood, Humble moved his family away from the river, settling near what was later known as Uncle Booge Isaacks place. He opened the first post office, informing surrounding towns to deliver the mail to Humble. Hence, the town was named after him.

Today the city limits of Humble encompasses only ten miles of land compared to the surrounding area that has taken its namesake. Now known as the Lake Houston Area, these sur-rounding communities include Atascocita, Humble, Kingwood, Summer Creek and portions of East Montgomery County.

Kingwood was developed by Friendswood Development Company, the pioneer in the design and implementation of master planning, to develop a new town in cooperation with nature on the 14,000 acres closest to Houston.

On December 28, 1967, Friendswood Development Com-pany purchased 50,000 acres of land from the Foster Lum-ber Company. This land, located on Highway 59, is about 25 miles northeast of downtown Houston. At that time, King-

wood was one of only two master-planned communities in the Houston region. The other community, also developed by Friendswood Development Company, is Clear Lake City, the home of NASA-Johnson Space Center.

In 1970 and 1971 the first five families moved into Trail-wood, the first of 21 villages that now make up the master-planned community of Kingwood, The Livable Forest. The founders of Kingwood, in all their wisdom, realized that for Kingwood to be successful they needed to be a part of the surrounding community. Friendswood Development Company discussed whether they should form their own chamber or help create a regional chamber and be a partner in regional growth and development. Friendswood Development Co. joined the Humble Chamber and the Humble Area Chamber was born. Start-up businesses in Kingwood joined the Hum-ble Area Chamber and the regional partnership has continued for more than 30 years. As the area continued to grow, new communities such as Atascocita, Fall Creek and Summerwood emerged and have joined the partnership, creating one of the most recognized regions and chambers in Texas.

Due to this dynamic growth, the Chamber Board of Directors recognized the need to re-name the Chamber in order to better reflect the region the Chamber serves. In 2010, the Chamber began a new era as The Lake Houston Area Chamber. Staying true to the organizations roots, Est. Humble, TX 1923 was incorporated into the logo. The tagine for Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce is Where Business Matters.

  • atascocitaSpanish explorer Alonzo DeLeon established an east-west

trail for military use that became known as the Atascos-

ito Road. It took its name from the Spanish outpost now

known as Liberty, Texas. In 1757, the Spanish built a fort

and established the Atascosito Settlement on this road

to prevent the French from trading with the Indians. It

became so widely used that by 1820 it had become the

most traveled road in Texas, connecting San Antonio, San

Felipe and Atascosito. Today, known as FM 1960, it serves

as the most direct east-west route in the region. The

area now known as Atascocita encompasses more than

15 subdivisions and has become one of the fastest grow-

ing residential communities in the nation.

Most of the individual subdivisions in Atascocita fea-

ture their own parks, swimming pools, tennis courts, and

easy access to recreational facilities. Additionally, area

residents can enjoy two recreational facilities. Located on

more than 120 acres, the Lindsay Lyons Park/Sports Cent-

er features a playground and barbecue pavilion, in addi-

tion to numerous athletic fields and facilities for soccer,

baseball, football and girls softball. Humble Independent

School District serves the Atascocita area and rates as one

of the best academic districts in the Houston region. Lone

Star College District also serves the area with our own

Atascocita Center, which opened in August 2011.

Bordering Atascocita on the east, Lake Houston plays

a vital role in the areas recreational offerings. Formed

by the damming of the San Jacinto River, the lake offers

excellent opportunities for swimming, fishing, boating and

skiing. With access from numerous public boat ramps, fish-

ing enthusiasts are drawn to more than a dozen varieties

of fish found in the lake. Boat enthusiasts find that the

lake has sufficient depth to accommodate power boats,

ski boats, bass boats and jet skis. At the other end of the

spectrum, human-powered, shallow-draft vessels such as

canoes and kayaks can navigate the breathtaking scenery

and native wildlife of the lake and its sources such as the

San Jacinto River and Spring Creek.

Established as a small dusty logging, cattle and later oil-boom town, Humble has come quite a way as a community in its 130 year history. Each village of King-wood is unique with its own amenities such as pools and trails for biking and jogging. The Humble Independent School District serves the Kingwood area and rates as one of the best academic districts in the Houston region. Lone Star College District serves the area with our own Kingwood Campus.

This most exceptional setting of more than 14,000 acres has been

crafted over a span of 30 years. Add-ing to natures bounty, Friendswood has added over 75 miles of greenbelts for bicycling, walking or jogging, neighbor-hood playgrounds with pools and grand-scale community parks that provide ball fields, soccer fields and boating ac-cess to Lake Houston. • hat began as a small community located near the San Jacinto River has blossomed into a cornerstone of the Greater Houston Area, an ever-widening area of prosperous commerce and multi-community growth.

The Lake Houston Area offers superior housing options and excellent schools to residents but a significant number commute to work daily.

The Lake Houston Economic Development Partnership (LHAEDP) is working to entice industrial and commercial companies to the area, along with expanding existing busi-

nesses. That means high-quality jobs for local residents and development of a true live, work, play community.

Proximity to Downtown Houston and location at the crossroads of major transportation corridors is appealing to commercial developers. Completion of Grand Parkway Segment G along with Beltway 8, FM 1960, I-10, I-45 and I-69 provide access by road. George Bush Intercontinen-tal Airport provides travel and transport by air, the Hou-ston Ship Channel and Port of Houston by sea and Union Pacific by rail.

Over the past several years, the Lake Houston Area has experienced an uptick in commercial developments. Most notable is Generation Park, a 4,000-acre mixed-use master planned enterprise park located on the northeast corner of Beltway 8/Sam Houston Tollway. Generation Park is expected to be a new business destination with more than 37 million square feet to be developed. The first company to build in Generation Park is FMC Technologies and they will bring about 1,500 employees to the Lake Houston Area in early 2016.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is situated just 10 minutes away from the Lake Houston Area. Bush Intercon-tinental is operated by the Houston Airport System (HAS), along with William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) and Ellington Air-port (EFD). Together, these three locations form one of the largest airport systems in the world. They also represent one of the local regions strongest economic partners.

HAS actively works with local organizations and cham-bers of commerce to help local entrepreneurs take advan-tage of the myriad of business opportunities. The three-airport system served more than 53 million passengers in 2014, including more than 9.8 million international travel-ers and positions Houston as the international passenger and cargo gateway to the south central United States and a primary gateway to Latin America.

While the airports represent a significant contri-bution to Houston and the surrounding communities' economies, they do not burden the local tax base to pay for operations, maintenance or capital improve-ments. Rather the system accomplishes financial self-sufficiency by deriving income from fees, rentals, and other charges. Surpluses generated are reinvested into capital development and bond retirement. At the same time according to the most recent economic impact study, these airports collectively contribute more than $27.5 billion to the local economy.
