2016 CAIC-ACCI Outstanding

Achievement Award

Congratulations Dr. Raoul Bonan for being selected to receive the 2016 CAIC-ACCI Outstanding Achievement Award! The CAIC-ACCI 2016 Outstanding Achievement Award was created in recognition of a CAIC-ACCI member who has demonstrated excellence in clinical practice, education, research or leadership within the discipline of interventional cardiology. The award will be presented during the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress Awards Ceremony on Sunday, October 23, 2016 between 6:15 PM - 8:00 PM at Le Westin, Room Fortification. It is hoped you will attend to congratulate your colleague in person!

Dr. Raoul Bonan has been working as an interventional cardiologist at the Montreal Heart Institute since 1978. He graduated from the Université de Paris, and came to the Institute to complete his training. He is also an Associate Professor of Medicine at Université de Montréal. Dr. Bonan is primary or co-author of over 190 scientific articles and 20 book chapters, particularly related to research on cardiovascular percutaneous interventions. He has participated in numerous interventional cardiology live cases and demonstrations around the world, and delivered more than 400 scientific presentations. For the past

30 years, Dr. Bonan has been deeply involved in the medical device industry. He is co-founder of Bio Inspire Technologies Inc. which is devoted to research and development of the new generation of the interventional medical devices. He is proud of his role in bringing many interventional cardiology procedures to Canada, including pulmonary valve dilatation, new balloon and wire for the coronaries, mitral dilatation, intra coronary brachytherapy and, 10 years ago, self-expanding percutaneous aortic valve implantation. The most rewarding aspect of his work, he says, is “teaching and transmission of the progression of the specialty, promoting the success of our Fellows.” His greatest hope is for less and less invasive therapies in cardiology. Dr. Bonan is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology, the American Heart Association and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions.

The CAIC-ACCI 2016 Fellows’ Device Course was delivered September 16-17, 2016 in Toronto, ON. Thank you to the 27 participating Fellows and 11 Faculty members from throughout Canada for making this year’s course exceptional! The objective of the Fellows’ Device Course is to provide participants with a working knowledge of the devices used during coronary interventions. Every workshop utilizes a small group learning dynamic with ample hands-on participation. Physical models are employed as teaching aids through which participants can apply both techniques and lessons learned. This approach is unique and there is no other such course in the world providing practical experience coupled with expert faculty guidance. The knowledge base includes construction, manufacture and engineering solutions that allow devices to work during clinical cases. Participants receive a framework of knowledge and information related to each of the devices. The imparted knowledge elevates a novice operator’s ability to select the best device options for specific clinical scenarios.

2016 FELLOWS DEVICE COURSE

Dear Fellows, Faculty and Sponsors, A special note of thanks to you all. The success of any program ultimately rests with participants and it is wonderful to have such engagement, interest and active participation of Fellows from across the country. Further, we sincerely appreciate our Faculty, each dedicates their time and skill every year simply because they enjoy sharing and teaching in this great format; it is truly an honor to teach with such experienced faculty and gifted teachers. Finally, thanks to our Industry partners who are incredibly engaged and truly enjoy participating in this unique program. Maintaining financial support in today’s financial environment is a constant challenge. However, we have benefitted each year from a real commitment to the educational goals of the course and we are very appreciative for the educational input. This is truly a collaboration and honestly a joyous one as each edition attains its educational goals. Educational goals need to evolve with the changing needs of Fellowship training, we look forward to the courses evolution. I anticipate that we will build on the best aspects of this hands-on, high Teacher / Fellow ratio workshop and add the necessary elements (evaluation and content) as guided by program leaders from across the country; a very exciting prospect. And then Kevin, thanks for all you bring to the organization of the course, but also your enthusiasm for the program and its evolution. Enjoy your Fellowship program and enjoy your teachers – you have a great year ahead! Peter Seidelin, Mike Curtis, Anthony Della-Siega (Directors) and the Faculty.

Excellent review, very relevant to our practice and I would recommend to my colleagues.
