What inspired you to write this book?
During my psychotherapeutic work with refugees and in emergency situations, I learnt about the immense problem of “disappearance” of relatives. This inspired me to research more on this concept and come out with psychotherapeutic

What are the social consequences of enforced disappearance?
Not only a “disappeared” person is left without any rights, the whole community and special family members are hit. The outlook for the relatives of victims of an ‘enforced disappearance’ is a grim one, the

How does this book equip someone suffering from grief?
This book gives you basic knowledge about common concepts of grief and mourning processes and how these theories can be used to analyze

GRIEF AND DISAPPEARANCEPsychosocial Interventions
Barbara Preitler University of Klagenfurt
Grief and Disappearance is one of the few studies about the impact of disappearance and the psychosocial and therapeutic interventions required for grieving relatives.
This book examines the theoretical background of grief and gives an insight into the nature and complexity of grief and mourning. Further, it describes various conflicts that arise out of the loss of a loved one in the context of disappearance. Additionally, it discusses forms of coping strategies that relatives adopt depending on their individual identities and cultural background.
The book uses case studies to analyze collective forms of dealing with disappearance and coming to a closure. The impact of death certificates, truth commissions, exhumations, memorial places, and forms of art and symbolic rituals are points of analysis.

GRDIVERSITY, SPECIAL NEEDS AND INCLUSION IN EARLY YEARS EDUCATIONEdited by Sophia Dimitriadi Department of Early Childhood Education, Technological Educational Institute of Athens
Instead of segregating children with special needs from the rest, Diversity, Special Needs, and Inclusion in Early Years Education argues for inclusiveness in educational institutions, through changes in curriculum and teaching methods.
The book presents case studies from various countries as well as theoretical frameworks, models, approaches and projects on diversity and inclusion to effective implementation of programmes and practices for young children. Each chapter of the book has a unique contribution to understanding the aspects of inclusive education taken from international experience.
This edited volume is for professionals and researchers in the field of special education, policy makers, parents and teachers, and school management. It would be of interest to people working on diversity and inclusive education as well as in early childhood education organisations. NGOs working in the area of special education will find this particularly useful.

CHILD AND ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTHEdited by Usha S Nayar Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai
Professionals, academics, and policy makers in the field of child and adolescent development tend to use theoretical frameworks stemming from traditional classified disciplines of psychology, sociology, political science, economics, education, and social work. This book creates an opportunity for experts to use interdisciplinary approaches and perspectives, and provides evidence-based knowledge to deal with the stresses of children and adolescents living in poverty, difficult socioeconomic conditions, and varied cultures. It also conveys the message that shared understandings can promote well-meaning and well-reasoned intervention success in similar contexts across nations in which children and adolescents are growing up in complex and risky environments.

AN AUDIENCE WITH TIMWhat can readers expect from the
4th edition?
This book sets out the ethics of counselling in ways that are directly linked to practice. It considers the issues that frequently cause practitioners to ask themselves - what ought
I to do now? The book has been thoroughly updated and has new chapters on counselling in the digital age, social diversity and the challenges of being accountable in the context of evidence-based practice. This new edition provides many practical examples of issues encountered by practitioners.
What are the key things you’re hoping students
will learn from the book?
The interactive e-book is an exciting new development. It provides opportunities to watch videos of ethical challenges just as they could arise in everyday practice. Each video is followed by short presentation by me. There are also pop-up definitions, links to journal articles, and multiple choice questions. My aim is to bring ethics to life.
What do you think are the most pressing ethical issues in counse l l ing and psychotherapy today?
The most pressing issues that confront counsellors are a mixture of familiar dilemmas around the management of client confidentiality, particularly when a client’s safety or the safety of others is involved. These are challenging situations to face, no matter how new or experienced we are as counsellors.. Understanding the ethical issues at stake helps in achieving the best possible course of action. Social diversity in contemporary society also presents major challenges for a profession that places so much emphasis on the quality of our listening to our clients. Listening and responding clients who have different values and experiences from ourselves is both ethically challenging but also can be life enriching for both the client and counsellor. These and many other issues require sound ethical decision-making to help us to be trustworthy for our clients and to work with integrity.

ESSENTIAL ISSUES IN COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY SERIESCounsellors and psychotherapists consider a number of important factors in their work with clients. Some are defined by training and theoretical orientation, some by context, and others by the client group with whom they work. However, across all these areas there are a number of essential issues - those that sit at the very core of practice - that must be considered by all therapists. Edited by Andrew Reeves, the Essential Issues in Counselling and Psychotherapy series brings together a number of new, accessible and practice-informed books that carefully and thoroughly address those considerations: the essential issues of practice that can challenge and shape all aspects of counselling and psychotherapy.
THE THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIP IN COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPYRosanne Knox Private Practice and Mick Cooper University of Roehampton
Drawing on the most commonly asked questions, this book takes trainees on a journey through the different aspects of the therapeutic relationship, from the initial boundary setting to the deepest levels of connection, exploring the uncertainties, risks and controversies along the way. Unravelling the issues surrounding the therapeutic relationship, this book highlights the importance of the relationship itself, of the client as a proactive agent in the process, and of the need for partnership and collaboration for effective therapy to take place. It will provide trainees and newly qualified therapists with the knowledge and skills they need to practice on a level of deep understanding and confidence.

60 SECONDS WITH... CHRISTIAN VAN NIEUWERBURGH
Why did you decide to write the book?
As the coaching industry matures, there has been increasing
interest in the development of coaching interventions and
resources within organisational settings. My first book for SAGE
was about the practical skills of coaching (regardless of context).
We wanted to follow this up with a book about the use of coaching within
specific professional contexts.
What do you think are the most important issues
in your field currently?
Coaching is at an important point in its development. Key issues relate to
the widespread use of coaching within organisational and professional
settings. Firstly, the question of managers using a coaching approach
with their teams is attracting interest. Secondly, organisations are looking
for cost-effective ways of offering coaching to as wide a range of their
staff as possible. Thirdly, the topic of “coaching cultures” is high on
the agenda. Finally, organisations with internal coaching pools are
looking for the best way of providing these coaches with high-quality
coaching supervision.
What do you think is in
store for the future
of coaching?
The future of coaching is integration.
Coach training should be integrated
into the professional development and
training of leaders in every context.
Health and educational practitioners
would also benefit from coaching
skills. I also predict that there will be
much closer integration between two
related fields: Coaching and Positive
Psychology. With their shared
focus on optimal functioning and
wellbeing, Coaching and Positive
Psychology are natural partners. By
integrating the two fields, we will be able to harness the power of
one-to-one conversations as well as strategies for positive change
across teams, organisations and societies.

EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLINGContributions to a Pluralistic Practice
Mick Cooper University of Roehampton
This is an excellent book that showcases one of our most influential and important writers and researchers at his very best
Dr Andrew Reeves, The University
of LIverpool Counselling Service

Videos of existential counselling in practice and written case studies ensure existential theory is illustrated in practice, while reflective questions and exercises help trainees relate notoriously complex existential themes to their own knowledge and experience. A companion website offers relevant journal articles, video tutorials on existential counselling skills, the results of the author’s survey of the ‘Top 10’ existential films, novels and songs, and much more. Both passionate and insightful, this book is the ideal guide to help your trainees understand existential therapy and learn how to integrate its ideas and practices into their therapeutic work.

INTRODUCTION TO COUNSELINGAn Art and Science Perspective
Fifth Edition
Michael Scott Nystul New Mexico State University, Las Cruces
Introduction to Counseling provides an overview of counseling and the helping professions from the perspective of art and science—the science of counseling that generates a knowledge base proven to promote competency and efficacy in the practitioner, and the art of using this knowledge base to build skills that can be applied sensitively to clients in a multicultural society.
The Fifth Edition has been organized into three sections: (1) an overview of counseling and the counseling process, (2) multicultural counseling and counseling theories, and (3) special approaches and settings. It continues to address key topics and issues, including gender, culture, and sexual orientation, and offers ways to integrate multiculturalism into all aspects of counseling, rather than view it as a separate entity. Highlighting emerging trends and changes in ethical codes, as well as reflecting the latest updates to the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5), the book successfully illustrates the importance of art and science to modern-day counseling.

PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACHES FOR COUNSELORSFrederick Redekop Kutztown University of Pennsylvania
Psychoanalyt ic Approaches for Counselors explores Freud’s historical contributions to the theories within this school of thought and demonstrates their practical application in clinical practice today. Using the compelling framework of the common factors approach, the text helps readers consider how both the client's perspective and the interpersonal forces within a helping relationship can shape positive therapeutic outcomes. The text’s clinical vignettes, case examples, and discussion of significant updates within the field further highlight the relevance of the psychoanalytic approach to counseling.
Psychoanalytic Approaches for Counselors is part of the SAGE Theories for Counselors Series that includes Cognitive Behavioral Approaches for Counselors, by Diane Shea, and Person-Centered Approaches for Counselors, by Jeffrey H.D. Cornelius-White.
Key Features:
• Presentation of the therapeutic themes inaugurated by Freud assists readers in understanding that certain fundamental issues continue to return to the field, which helps them avoid responding naively to the next iteration of a theme.
• The text explores the historical development, process, evaluation, and contemporary application for psychoanalytic approaches.
• The inclusion of important upda==tes comprising the movement toward an interpersonal model, a concern with multicultural practice, and the integration of neuroscientific findings demonstrate that psychoanalytic and psychodynamic counseling are highly relevant, research-supported approaches.
• Clinical vignettes and an extended case example vividly illustrate theoretical constructs.
• Concise summaries of crucial content, such as psychoanalytic treatment and the neuroscience of the development of emotions, provide readers with practical takeaway points.

SKILLS IN GESTALT COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPYThird Edition
Phil Joyce Metanoia Institute, London and Charlotte Sills Metanoia Institute and Ashridge College
I am delighted to endorse this version
of Skills in Gestalt Counselling and
Psychotherapy. Having kept their original two versions close
by for many years, both as a therapist and as a trainer, this new
edition continues to confirm what I already believe about the
authors’ rich and scholarly theoretical and practical response
to the challenges and experience of Gestalt practise.
This new edition is (again) full of practical suggestions,
experiential exercises and detailed, precise attention to
the moment by moment, unfolding experience of being in
therapeutic relationship. The authors provide a comprehensive
review of current literature and research, and interweave this
with sound recommendations for practise. The chapters
on Trauma are timely, thorough, and extremely practical in
their guidance on working with people who experience such
devastation
The whole tone of the writing is exemplary of the
authors' commitment to relational gestalt practise, whilst
acknowledging contributions from the wider field
I strongly recommend this book to students and experienced
therapists alike.
- George Bassett, Course leader of the
Diploma in Gestalt Psychotherapy, Nottingham
Psychotherapy Training Institute
Focusing on skills that arise out of Gestalt theory, as well as those invoked by the therapeutic relationship, this new edition guides the reader through a range of practice issues which might arise during the therapeutic process; from setting up the therapeutic session and creating a working alliance, to adopting a research approach and managing difficult encounters.

COUNSEL
60 SECONDS WITH THE AUTHORS...What do you think makes your book unique?
We believe the practical focus of Counselling Adolescents is
its most important attribute. There are many books available
on counselling that provide (a much needed) theoretical focus
however it is also important to directly link this theoretical
knowledge with practical skills. This, we feel, is the unique contribution
that Counselling Adolescents brings to the field.
What do you think are the most important issues
in adolescent counselling at the moment?
From our personal experience, the majority of young people we support
seek counselling for challenges they are experiencing with anxiety and/
or relationships. Many young people seem to be under a great deal of
pressure in today’s world that, consequently, puts a strain on both their
emotional and social lives. We have attempted to capture the complex
reasons underlying this pressure in a new chapter in the fourth edition
of Counselling Adolescents titled ‘The Contemporary Context of
Adolescence’.
What for you are the most interesting areas of
current research in this area?
We are quite excited about the new opportunities that
technology provides within the counselling field. Technology has
become a big part of many young persons lives and there is a
growing research base for the effectiveness of the application of
technology to counselling. For these reasons we have included
a new chapter in the fourth edition of Counselling Adolescent
on this very topic!Rebecca

THE HANDBOOK OF COUNSELLING CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLEEdited by Sue Pattison Newcastle University, Maggie Robson Keele University and Ann Beynon
At a time when the need for "joined
up working" between practitioners
supporting vulnerable children and
young people is at the forefront of
good practice, [this] handbook puts itself ahead of the field
in providing a unique overview for professionals and trainees.
Amongst other things, it provides critiques of theoretical models
for practice, valuable insights into working with individual mental
health needs and ethics, organizational considerations for
best practice and emerging developments such as online
counselling. This book has it all, and is a "must have" for all
practitioners and trainees in the field

UNIVERSITIES AT WARThomas Docherty University of Warwick
An impassioned and controversial exploration of the future of the university. On one side are self-proclaimed modernisers who view the institution as vital to national economic success, its principles of private and personal enrichment necessary conditions of ‘progress’. On the other side the university is about extending human possibilities and freedoms, seeking earnestly for social justice, and participating in democracy. This book analyses the former position, and argues for the necessity of taking sides with the latter.

RANK HYPOCRISIESThe Insult of the REF
Derek Sayer
A must-read for all academics working in higher education today. Derek Sayer has been involved in a well publicized dispute with his employer, Lancaster University, about what he sees as irregularities in the REF process. Although eligible, he refused to enter his 4 best publications as a protest against the entire exercise. In this scathing account, he not only criticizes the REF for discouraging innovation and harming staff morale, but also questions the REF's claim to provide 'expert review of the outputs' - the very heart of its legitimacy.

In 1976 SAGE published a series of short ‘university papers’, which led to the publication of the QASS series (or the ‘little green books’ as they became known to researchers). Almost 40 years since the release of the first ‘little green book’, SAGE is delighted to offer a new series of swift, short and topical pieces in the ever-growing digital environment.
SAGE Swifts offer authors a new channel for academic research with the freedom to deliver work outside the conventional length of journal articles. The series aims to give authors speedy access to academic audiences through digital first publication, space to explore ideas thoroughly, yet at a length which can be readily digested, and the quality stamp and reassurance of peer-review.
THE SAGE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THEORY IN COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPYEdited by Edward S Neukrug Old Dominion University
This encyclopedia is a two-volume source that traces theory and examines the beginnings of counseling and psychotherapy all the way to current trends and movements. This reference work draws together a team of international scholars that examine the global landscape of the key counselling and psychotherapy theories and the theorists behind them while presenting them in context needed to understand their strengths and weaknesses.
This is a quick, one-stop source that gives the reader the 'who, what, where, how, and why' of contemporary counseling and psychotherapy theory. From historical context in which the theories were developed to the theoretical underpinnings which drive the theories, the encyclopedia has detailed and relevant information for all individuals interested in this subject matter.

THCOMMON MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMSFour-Volume Set
Edited by David Pilgrim University of Liverpool
This four-volume major work compiles literature which deals with conditions that - in recent parlance in Western societies – have come to be labelled as ‘common mental-health problems'. The articles within these volumes explore the causes and understandings and prevention and treatment of mental-health problems, drawing upon philosophical, conceptual, historical and empirical discussions of fear and sadness.
The set focuses on ontology (what exactly is a ‘common mental-health problem’?), as well as diverse views about epistemology. These include different perspectives about how misery, in its various forms in recent times in the West, has been turned into a set of medical conditions and the different forms of favoured knowledge developed by both clinical and non-clinical researchers.
Volume One: Misery across Time and Place
Volume Two: Medical Approaches to Common Mental-Health Problems
Volume Three: Psychological Approaches to Common Mental-Health Problems
Volume Four: The Social Context of Common Mental-Health Problems

TRAUMATIC STRESSFour-Volume Set
Edited by Michael J Scott Private Practice, Liverpool
This is an outstanding collection of
papers on traumatic stress from which
clinicians cannot fail to benefit. Articles
have been very thoughtfully selected
to provide both breadth of coverage
and depth of insight. There is a most
welcome focus on critical areas that are
often neglected, such as treatment of comorbid conditions
and the translation of evidence into practice.
—Chris R Brewin, Professor of Clinical
Psychology, University College London
This four-volume collection provides access to key papers which have formed our present-day understanding of the effects of extreme trauma. Traumatic stress is an important and diverse area of research and practice that crosses disciplines including psychology, psychiatry, and cognitive behavioural psychotherapy. The literature on the topic which has emerged over the last 50 years spans a large number of fields and journals. This major work performs the services of bringing together these disparate but vital strands of research into a single publication. Edited and introduced by esteemed Editor, Michael J. Scott, the literature is arranged into four thematic volumes, designed to guide the reader through key developments in the field and provide them with a comprehensive overview.
Volume One: Introduction, History, Context
Volume Two: Approaches to The Treatment of Trauma Related Disorders
Volume Three: The Management of Secondary Traumatisation and Comorbidity
Volume Four: Translating Evidence Based Treatment to Routine Practise

CHILD MALTREATMENTThree-Volume Set
Edited by Eileen Munro and Trish Hiddleston London School of Economics
This three-volume set by two leaders
in the field provides a comprehensive
grounding in contemporary knowledge
and practice for child protection work.
The volume brings together commentary
on the latest evidence and debates
about the nature of child maltreatment and how best to achieve
children's safety and well-being. The set will be an invaluable
resource for academics, policy makers, practitioners and
students in the field of child protection.
— Professor Karen Healy School of Social Work and
Human Services The University of Queensland
The protection of children from maltreatment is a worldwide challenge. Social context plays a significant role in both the definition of and society's responses to child maltreatment. The core concept of child maltreatment is socially constructed with variations in its meaning over time and between cultures, creating significant challenges and resulting in a tension between respecting different cultures yet having one law or standard applicable for all children.
This major work serves a significant function in pulling together literature demonstrating the different lessons that have been learned, pulling out common elements where possible, and helping to clarify the nature of the differences.

PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESSThree-Volume Set
Edited by Stephen Palmer Centre for Stress Management, London and Kristina Gyllensten
Stress has been called the 'great modern disease' and it causes many negative effects for societies, organizations, and individuals. Stress may also be responsible for psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, and burnout. Indeed, stress and its consequences have been described in the literature since the 19th-century with William James and Carl Lange’s work.
This three-volume major work contains articles which trace the development of ideas around stress from the early twentieth century to the modern day, spanning the fields of psychology, applied mental health, coaching, and cognitive behavioural psychotherapy.
Volume One: The History and Development of Theories
Volume Two: The Measurement of Stress
Volume Three: The Management of Stress
