COURSE OFFERINGS 7TH

ART

8112FA - Artistic Journeys

Students will use the work of historical and contemporary artists as an inspiration and beginning point to creating their own art. The course will give students time to experiment and discover “who” they are as an artist.

BUSINESS/COMPUTER EDUCATION

7107PA – Computers for the 21st CenturyThis course will provide a baseline of computer literacy skills and "21st century” competencies. Students will expand their creative computer abilities in keyboarding, presentations, desktop publishing, spreadsheets, Internet research and safety, Movie Maker, and podcasting.

7705PA Introduction to Computer Science (Oakland, Lange, Smithton, and West Middle Schools only)

The course is designed to motivate students to continue learning computer science to improve real world relationships, connections, and life. Key concepts taught:

� What is computer science? - What is a computer scientist?- Applications of computer science - Basic understanding of binary - How to debug - How the Internet works - Programming concepts -Computational Thinking

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE

This course is designed to explore the subject of

Family and consumer sciences. Students complete

projects in the following units of study: Successful

“U”; cooking and nutrition; sewing; financial fitness;

and child development.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

7106PA Inventions and

Innovations

Students are introduced to and use the design

process to solve problems and understand the

influence that creative and innovative design

has on our lives. Students use industry standard

3-D modeling software to create a virtual image

of their designs and produce real life creative

solutions. Students use state of the art 3-D

printers and power tools to actually “build what

they design”!

MUSIC/CHOIR

�This course can be repeated for a second

semester to create a daily yearlong choral

experience. (If there is enough interest!)

THEATER

8212FA Theatrical Arts

Students will sharpen personal communication skills by

preparing, presenting, and evaluating performance-based

activities. Improvisation skills, group communication,

and problem solving will also be explored through games

and activities. Students will explore storytelling, prose,

duet acting, and a variety of other events. Emphasis will

be placed on in class performance and creative projects

that will enhance student’s knowledge and appreciation

of the theater and oral interpretation.

1631EL AVID

AVID is an academic elective course that prepares

students for college readiness and success. Each week,

students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college

preparatory curriculum provided by an AVID teacher,

tutor-facilitated study groups, motivational activities, and

academic success skills. In AVID, students participate in

activities that incorporate strategies in writing, inquiry,

collaboration, organization, and reading to support their

academic growth. This is a teacher recommended class.

An application and interview are necessary.

READING

2150LA Reading Workshop - Intervention

Placement in this supplemental reading course (sixth through eighth grade) is determined by a reading test scores and teacher recommendation. It is designed to teach literacy strategies to students who struggle with aspects of reading.

If a student is recommend to take Reading, this will replace some of their elective choices.

Special Notes:

Elective and Class conflicts may occur.

� Please make sure to give alternates on enrollment

forms.

� All core classes taught at West Middle School are

year long.

� If you have questions about a math placement or

world language placement these need to be

addressed with the respective teacher a soon as

possible!*A teacher is always the best person to answer any questions

you may have regarding a class placement.

� Please do not request a specific teacher, hour, or

semester, as we will be unable to meet these

requests.
