3 «« Superintendent’s Message

Thank You for 50 Years

Greetings, Friend!

On behalf of Marine Military Academy

and the Board of Trustees, I am

pleased to present the 2015-16 MMA

Giving Report & Year in Review. This

issue is a particularly proud one,

as it commemorates MMA’s 50th

anniversary. I cannot adequately

express what an honor it is to lead such

a phenomenal institution, one that is

50 years strong.

Since 1965, Marine Military Academy

has chal lenged young men to

achieve both scholastic and personal

excellence. As a result of the character,

determination and discipline we instill

in them, our graduates are not only

prepared for college, they are prepared

for life. They graduate as leaders and

men of honor. Our graduates have an

incredible advantage over their peers

... and we have hundreds and hundreds

of successful alumni to prove it.

Never underestimate the power of

your gift and the difference it makes.

Each year Marine Military Academy

is able to operate in the black and

award cadet scholarships thanks to

your support. Whatever you choose

to give, THANK YOU for supporting

Marine Military Academy. We could

never have achieved “50 Years of

Excellence” without you!

Semper Fi,

Col R. Glenn Hill, USMC (Ret)

Superintendent

Gen Alfred M. Gray Jr., USMC (Ret)Chancellor

29th Commandant,U.S. Marine Corps

Alexandria, Va.

A Cadet is the most important

person in our business; without

him, we do not have a school.

A Cadet is not dependent upon us;

we are dependent on him.

A Cadet is not an interruption of

our work; he is the purpose of it.

A Cadet and his family do us a

favor when they enroll; we are

not doing them a favor by serving

them.

A Cadet is an integral part of our

business, not an outsider.

A Cadet is not a statistic; he

is a person with feelings and

emotions like our own.

A Cadet is learning to be a man;

we should be role models in

decorum and demeanor.

A Cadet is deserving of the most

courteous and attentive treat-

ment we can give him.

A Cadet is the lifeblood of this

school. If we don’t provide this

level of service, someone else

will.

History of Marine Military Academy

In the early 1960s, Capt William

A. Gary, an Arizona rancher

and retired U.S. Marine Corps

Reservist, wanted to send his son

to a school that embraced the

ideology of the Marine Corps. He

believed that the Marine Corps’

concepts of leadership, discipline

and moral values could be applied

to a college-prep education.

Capt Gary could not ind such a

school, so in 1963 he recruited a group

of prominent Marines to start one.

Capt Gary and his supporters learned of

a defunct Air Force base in Harlingen,

Texas. The base was used to train

combat navigators during World

War II. The Marines envisioned the

base as a campus, a campus for an

all-boys boarding school. Capt Gary

and his team then began structuring

the educational laboratory that would

develop today’s young men into

tomorrow’s leaders.

On Sept. 9, 1965, Marine Military

Academy opened its doors to 58

cadets; six would comprise the irst graduating class of 1966. Today,

MMA is home to hundreds of young

men from across the globe. MMA’s

proven education model makes it

among the world’s top boarding

schools for adolescent males.

Introductory Training Graduation

Sixty-ive plebes graduated from their four-week introductory training Sept.

12 and became oficial members of the Marine Military Academy Corps

of Cadets. The graduation, which is

normally held on the MMA Parade

Grounds, was moved to Yeckel

auditorium due to rain.

At the ceremony, the young men took

the oficial oath of an MMA cadet. After

Corps insignia to their covers. Then the

newly minted cadets walked across the

stage and accepted their certificate

of completion from Guest of Honor

Thomas Brownell, Class of 1984.

After the graduation ceremony, the

young men enjoyed their irst weekend of liberty with their family members

and/or friends.

Plebe Training

New students, or plebes, spend

their irst four weekends on the MMA campus for introductory

training. The plebes are mostly

in the Back 40 participating in

challenging outdoor and team-

building activities ... and good

old-fashioned exercise! The fall

plebes became official cadets

when they graduated from

introductory training Sept. 12.

50th Birthday Ball »» 8

50th Birthday Ball

Marine Military Academy celebrated

“50 Years of Excellence” at its 50th

Birthday Ball Oct. 31. Though it was

Halloween night, attendees gladly

traded the candy, costumes and antics

for the dinner, gowns and grandeur of

the birthday ball.

Per tradition, the 50th Birthday Ball cake

was carried in by the cadet battalion

staff and then sliced by Superintendent

Col R. Glenn Hill. The irst piece of cake was served to Guest of Honor MSG

Joseph Burkett, USA (Ret), Class of

1991; and the second piece was served

to MMA’s youngest cadet, eighth-

grader Fouad Torres González of San

Andres Cholula, Mexico.

The inal highlight of the 50th Birthday Ball was the mother-and-son dance,

which kicked off the dancing and

“OOH-RAH!” for the rest of the evening.

Battalion Commander Jack Newbury of Richmond, Texas, and his date hit the dance loor.

The cadet battalion staff carries in the 50th Birthday Ball cake.

Each year, this formal event celebrates

MMA’s birthday (Sept. 9, 1965) and the

Marine Corps birthday (Nov. 10, 1775.)

As MMA turns 50, the Marine Corps

turns 240 years old.

Superintendent Col R. Glenn Hill cuts the cake like a true Marine.

MSG Joseph Burkett, USA (Ret), Class of 1991, addresses the audience.

Junior Brice Kolle of Sugar Land, Texas, stands with his proud mother.

9 «« Harlon Block Ceremony

Old Glory was raised on the Iwo Jima Monument in honor of Cpl Harlon Block.

Harlon Block Memorial Ceremony

More than 150 people turned out for

the Harlon Block Memorial Ceremony

Nov. 6. The event consisted of a

battalion review in front of the Iwo Jima

Monument followed by a wreath-laying

at the Corporal Harlon Block gravesite

located behind the monument.

Special guests at this event were Mayor

of Harlingen Chris Boswell, Mayor of

Weslaco David Suarez and STAR DAY

Foundation President Dennis Kulvicki.

Marine Military Academy held the event

to pay tribute to the fallen Marine

and Iwo Jima lag-raiser on his actual birthday.

Cpl Block, a native of Weslaco, Texas,

was captured on ilm during World War II by photographer Joe Rosenthal on

Feb. 23, 1945, during a lag-raising on the island of Iwo Jima. Of the six men,

Cpl Block was the one at the base of

the lagstaff. The Marine never saw the famous

photo, as he was killed in action March

1, 1945, at age 21.

Cpl Block, born Nov. 6, 1924, would

have turned 91 years old this year.

His gravesite lies behind the Iwo Jima

Monument on the MMA campus.

To Rio Grande Valley historians, Cpl

Block was a member of the “Weslaco

Eight.” In the 1942-43 school year,

he and seven other Weslaco High

School football players were allowed

to graduate high school at mid-term so

they could join the U.S. Marine Corps

and serve their country during the war.

To national historians, Cpl Block

belongs to a selfless generation of

Americans now known as “The Greatest

Generation.”

On the morning of the Harlon Block

Memorial Ceremony, Cpl Block’s story

aired on national television on the

“TODAY” show. To watch the video,

Marine Military Academy honored

nearly 100 heroes at the Veterans Day

Parade Nov. 11. Just as impressive was

the number of people of all ages who

al l veterans were asked to join

In addition to the parade recognition,

all of the veterans received appreciation

11 «« Chosin Few Ceremony

Thirteen Chosin Few veterans come together at MMA 65 years later.

Chosin Few Ceremony

Thirteen veterans of the Battle of

Chosin Reservoir attended the Chosin

Few Parade & Memorial Ceremony

at Marine Military Academy Dec. 12.

The 13 men traveled from across the

country to reunite with some of their

comrades 65 years later.

More than 150 people attended the

parade to pay homage to these Korean

War heroes. Thanks to Tootsie Roll

Industries, all event-goers received a

bank of Tootsie Roll candy.

Following the parade, the Chosin Few

gathered at the MMA president’s

house for a reception. After a prayer by

Chaplain Chris Elliott, Superintendent

Col R. Glenn Hill presented the 13

honorees with a giant bank of Tootsie

Roll candy — the food they survived on

back in 1950.

At the reception, Col Hill said, “It’s been

called the Korean Conlict. It’s been called a police action. But everyone in

this room knows it was a war.”

Though the Battle of Chosin Reservoir

was an epic military triumph, it remains

a forgotten battle from a forgotten war.

The Battle of Chosin Reservoir (Nov. 27 -

Dec. 13, 1950) was one of the bloodiest

Korean War battles. It was also one of

the coldest battles in history and often

referred to as “Frozen Chosin.”

It was during the coldest winter in

100 years in North Korea that 15,000

American fighters were surrounded

by 120,000 Chinese and North Korean

soldiers at Chosin Reservoir.

The men needed to break out of the

encirclement, and their only “lifeline”

was to walk down a steep and narrow

mountain road they called the MSR,

or main supply route. The MSR would

lead the troops to the port of Hungnam,

but they had to walk 78 miles in brutal,

sub-zero temperatures to reach it. They

also had to battle wave after wave of

enemy soldiers as they made their way

toward the sea.

Against seemingly impossible odds,

most of the Allied troops reached the

Hungnam port and managed to inlict crippling losses on the Chinese and

North Korean forces. Their fighting

spirit, courage and determination saved

the lives of 98,000 civilian refugees.

The survivors of the Battle of Chosin

Reservoir would later become known

as the Chosin Few. Chosin Few veteran Albert Miller merrily accepts his bank of Tootsie Roll candy.

The Chosin Few veterans rise for the parade pass in review.

Senior Chukwuemeka Atuma of Abuja, Nigeria, proudly stands with Chosin Few veteran William Celis Jr.

Mid-Term Registration

Marine Military Academy welcomed a

new crop of promising boys at the Jan.

9 registration. Approximately 50 boys

started their new year at a new school.

No matter which semester they begin,

cadets must arrive at MMA at least a

few days before classes begin in order

to collect their uniform items, visit

the tailor and barber, meet with the

academic counselor or registrar and

complete any other necessary tasks

before the start of school.

New students or “plebes” must also

use these days to grasp the new

daily routine, learn how to make their

beds and clean their rooms, ind their classrooms and way around the MMA

campus, and start absorbing the Marine

Corps drill, terminology and customs.

Plebes must also spend their first

four weekends on the MMA campus

participating in introductory training,

where they engage in drill, physical

training and numerous outdoor

activities and challenges.

Sophomore Lin Xiang of Shanghai can’t decide which makes him more nervous — the headshaving or drill instructor GySgt Frank Martinez!

Sophomore Cristobal Hernández Marquez of Monterrey, Mexico, gets escorted to in-processing by senior Lorenzo Casso of Baton Rouge, La.

All new students or “plebes”

receive a headshaving soon after

they check in. The headshaving

is a rite of passage for cadets.

They lose their hair but gain new

courage and conidence. Below are just a few of the plebes who

were caught on camera Jan. 9.

Eighth-grader Tyler Ferrell of Houston receives a heartfelt good-bye from his father.

was the best thing that could have ever

happened to him.

“It gave me the will to do something

that was right. It gave me mental,

LtGen Hejlik shared with the cadets that

the irst time he attended college his GPA was 1.17. After four years in the

Marine Corps, he returned to college

— and his GPA shot up to 3.9!

“That’s what structure and discipline

can do for you,” he said.

The general also told the young men

to practice the Marine Corps values of

honor, courage and commitment at

all times. He reminded them that they

will face peer pressure their entire lives,

both at school and at work.

“It can be a good thing depending on

how you handle it. It can push you to

do the right thing,” LtGen Hejlik said.

“Do the right thing even when no one

Iwo Jima Parade

Ten Iwo Jima survivors attended the

Marine Military Academy Iwo Jima

Parade Feb. 19, and nearly 350 people

turned out to honor them. This year

marks the 71st anniversary of the Battle

of Iwo Jima during World War II.

This annual event is a tribute to the

courage and sacrifice made by The

Greatest Generation to preserve

freedom around the world. Because

of the subtropical climate of South

Texas, MMA is the only organization in

the country that holds a battalion-size

parade on the actual anniversary (Feb.

19, 1945) of the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Since April 1982, MMA has been

home to the Iwo Jima Monument. The

magniicent statue depicts ive Marines and one Navy Corpsman raising the

American lag on Feb. 23, 1945, during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Cpl Harlon Block,

the Marine depicted at the base of the

lagstaff, was a native of Weslaco, Texas.

Texas 170thAnniversary Event

The STAR DAY Foundation, a non-

proit organization dedicated to preserving Texas history, held the

State of Texas 170th Anniversary

Ceremony at Marine Military

Academy Feb. 19. Texas, formerly

a republic, was inducted into the

United States Dec. 29, 1845, but

the transfer of power did not

occur until Feb. 19, 1846.

At the event, STAR DAY Founda-

tion President Dennis Kulvicki not

only announced the anniversary

of the state of Texas but also read

a Texas proclamation declaring

Feb. 19 as Iwo Jima Day. MMA’s

founder the late Capt William

“Bill” Gary was then the irst of several Texans to be inducted into

the Pioneers and Leaders of the

State of Texas Hall of Fame.

The award-winning Floreseville

High School Air Force Junior

ROTC Chorale also participated in

this event and performed “Texas

Our Texas” and other state songs.

Vietnam War Parade

More than 100 Vietnam War survivors

attended the Marine Military Academy

Vietnam War Commemorative Parade

March 5. At the parade, the veterans

joined Superintendent Col R. Glenn

Hill during ceremonial pass in review.

The MMA cannon was also fired in

their honor.

According to Col Hill, the parade was

to express gratitude to those veterans

who unselishly served in one of the most controversial wars in U.S. history.

“During the Vietnam War, the public’s

dissatisfaction with the war was often

relected in the treatment of the men and women who served there,” Col Hill

said. “Fortunately, over time, we have

come to recognize that the men and

women of our armed services should

be honored for their sacriices.”In May 2012, President Barack Obama

proclaimed May 28, 2012 – Nov. 11,

2025 to be the Commemoration of

the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam

War. Col Hill said MMA decided to

hold a Vietnam War parade the 2015-

16 school year, the year the school

celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The Vietnam War was a civil war

between communist North Vietnam

and non-communist South Vietnam. It

endured nearly 20 years, from Nov. 1,

1955 to April 30, 1975.

In March 1965, President Lyndon B.

Johnson made the decision to send U.S.

combat forces into Vietnam to support

South Vietnam. On March 8, 1965,

3,900 Marines waded ashore China

Beach, which marked the beginning of

the American ground war.

The U.S. stayed involved until March

29, 1975.

Class of 1966 to the most recent Class

of 2015, an alumnus from almost every

graduating class was present at this

landmark event.

Most of the alumni reunited April 1

and participated in various activities

on the MMA campus, particularly the

Alumni Reunion Parade. Most of the

men gathered again April 2 at the

Alumni Reunion Dinner held at South

In addition to alumni, hundreds of

spouses, children and friends attended

the reunion. In fact, some fathers

and sons who graduated from MMA

decades apart celebrated as “brothers.”

General H.M. Smith Dinner

Though they are living in complicated

times, Gen Alfred “Al” Gray Jr., 29th

Commandant of the Marine Corps

during the Gulf War, reminded the

Marine Military Academy Corps of

Cadets that they are the hope of the

nation at the General H.M. Smith Dinner

April 7.

“You’re going to be the young leaders

of our nation, and you’d better do

well,” said the Chancellor of MMA.

“The responsibilities that will be placed

on your shoulders upon graduation

are probably, in my humble opinion,

greater than any time in our history.”

Gen Gray told the audience the young

people of America are capable of being

good leaders.

“I think they’re smart, they’re quick ...

and we all know how good they are

with technology,” Gen Gray said. “I think

in the long run they’re going to come

through for us. They always have, and

they always will.”

He also reminded the cadets of the

most important trait of a strong leader.

“Everything you’ll ever achieve will be

done with people. So doesn’t it make

common sense to take care of people?

That’s what it’s all about. Take care of

the people, and they’ll take care of you,”

Gen Gray said.

After his speech, Gen Gray was

presented with the 2016 MMA Iwo

Jima Leadership Award,

Gen Gray served 41 years in the Marine

Corps when he retired July 30, 1991,

with his last four as 29th Commandant

of the Marine Corps. As a reminder

that the primary role of every Marine

is a rileman, Gen Gray had his oficial photograph taken in his camoulage utility uniform, the irst Commandant to ever do so. Gen Gray was both a Korean

War and Vietnam War veteran. He holds

27 awards, including the Distinguished

Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of

Merit, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Speaker Gen Alfred “Al” Gray Jr. jests with the audience.

50th Commencement Exercises

The 50th Annual Marine Military

Academy Commencement Exercises

took place May 21 in Yeckel auditorium.

Haoyang Li of Beijing had the honor

of being valedictorian for the Class of

2016. Chaunce Lee of Shanghai was

the proud salutatorian.

The guest speaker for this momentous

occasion was H. William “Bill” Card

III, Class of 1970. Through his own

stories, Mr. Card left the cadets

with three life lessons: 1) Use good

judgment; 2) Know why you are

doing something; and 3) Be lexible. “You only have one race to run.

Make it count,” Mr. Card said. “If you

don’t like the race you are running,

change it.”

He also reminded the cadets to stay

true to two words: Semper Fidelis

(always faithful).

“I learned the true meaning of these

words at MMA. They will always

steer you in the right direction,”

Graduate Kolten Wagner Bushu of Tomball, Texas, accepts his diploma from Superintendent Col R. Glenn Hill (left) and H. William “Bill” Card III, Class of 1970.

Mr. Card said. “Remain faithful to

God, your country, your family and

yourself.”

After listening to powerful speeches

by the valedictorian, salutatorian and

guest speaker, the 49 graduation

candidates walked across the stage to

accept their high school diplomas. The

event concluded with the traditional

tossing of the covers.

Graduate Yang Yi Wu of Yorba Linda, Calif., embraces a “brother” after the cover toss.

MSgt Efren Quilit

Alpha Company Assistant Drill Instructor

MSgt Efren Longboy Quilit, USMC (Ret),

passed away in mid-February at age 55.

MSgt Quilit, or MSgt “Q”, was known

for his sunny and positive personality,

sense of humor and loyalty to the

Marine Military Academy cadets.

MSgt Quilit was born March 4,

1960, in Baay, Batac Ilocos Norte,

Philippines, to Eufemia and Felix

Quilit. He moved from the Philippines

to Guam at age 16. He joined the

Marines in 1979 and served faithfully

for 23 years. MSgt Quilit joined MMA

in June 2003 as the assistant drill

instructor for Alpha Company.

Loved and respected by all who knew

him, a huge number of MMA staff,

cadets and even alumni turned out for

MSgt Quilit’s funeral service Feb. 21.

MMA also dedicated a brick paver in his

honor March 7. The brick paver lies in

front of the Alpha Company barrack, on

the sidewalk facing Battalion Avenue.

Several Alpha Company alumni also

traveled from afar to attend the brick

paver ceremony.

MSgt Quilit is survived by his sister,

Florida Caluya; two brothers, Benito

Quilit and Alex Quilit; nieces; nephews;

and extended family. He is remembered

as a loving brother and uncle by his

family. He will be remembered as a loyal

colleague, mentor and drill instructor by

his friends and MMA family.

Another 50 Years

The 2015-16 school year was a

busy, but exciting year! This spirit

of family and pride was not only

alive but on ire!Every school year has i t s

peaks and valleys, and its own

accomplishments and special

moments; but what makes each

school year truly one-of-a-kind

is the Corp of Cadets. Every class

has boys who grow into real men

and go on to accomplish more

than they ever thought possible.

I am blessed to work in education

and at Marine Military Academy.

Each year you can close a

chapter and then begin a new

one. I’m fairly certain I will not

be here to celebrate MMA’s

100th anniversary, but I can rest

knowing that MMA will still be

here to help future generations

of young men. Thank YOU for

helping MMA stay strong today

and for another 50 years.

Sincerely,

LtCol Robert Grider, USMC (Ret)
