Anchor Penetration

A guide as to what are the optimal fluke angles to have for penetration to take place are as follows:

Sands - 30° to 35°Mud/soft clays - 50°Stiff clay/hard sands - 25° to 30°

Some anchors can and others cannot be set to particular fluke angles but when this is possible a system of heavy chocks are used which fit at the hinge point of the stock and impinge in the flukes as they open thus limiting the angle.

Generally anchors that cannot be altered such as Bruce and some fixed stock anchors are designed so that the fluke angle is between 25°/30°. Fluke roughness

Extremely bare smooth unridged flukes have been shown to improve an anchor penetration capacity and therefore holding power in a variety of soil types.
