2014 Outlook

With key pieces returning for both the men and women, the Auburn Montgomery cross country teams are focused to make a run at the Southern States Athletic Conference Championship and qualify for the NAIA Championship in 2014. Fourth-year head coach Michael Gross knows that each team still has a lot to prove, but also knows that both feature a talented roster. “I like where both of our teams were selected in the preseason SSAC polls,” Gross said. “We have our own expectations, but based on those projections, we have an opportunity to catch teams by surprise. I think we have a skilled group on both sides, but key factors for us will be staying healthy and seeing how our freshmen adjust to the college distances.” The men’s team welcomes back four runners from last season, including junior Zach Sollie, its top finisher in all seven races in 2013. Last season Sollie recorded a school-record 8K time of 27:15.10 and enters the season holding six of the top-10 times in the program’s history. “Zach was named a team captain for the season following a strong sophomore season,” said Gross of Sollie. “He has trained extremely hard during the summer and has a goal to run a sub-26 time in an 8K this year. I think he will continue to be the stalwart for our team and could be an all-conference performer.” Also returning are fellow juniors Andrew Russell and Shaw Cornelius, as well as sophomore Mike Bulger. Russell finished second for AUM six times as a sophomore, while Cornelius posted six top-50 finishes. Bulger ran three sub-30 times as a freshman. “I think Andrew and Shaw are quietly trying to catch Zach and their training this summer has reflected that goal,” said Gross. “Hopefully that competitive spirit will carry over into success for all three runners this season.” “Last year was really beneficial for Mike to get acclimated to the college distance,” Gross added about Bulger. “We are working on getting his form a little more polished, but with his conditioning, he should have a nice sophomore season.” Joining the Warhawks for their first season with the program are freshmen Dozier Atwell, Chris Swann and Anfernee Williams. Atwell established a school-record 5K time at Prattville High School, while Swann was a two-sport letterwinner at Oneonta High School. Williams was a standout track and field and cross country athlete at Opelika High School. “The big question for the guys will be which one of our newcomers

adjusts quickest,” Gross said of the three additions. “Chris trained well all summer and has come into the preseason in great shape. Dozier is a former high school teammate of Mike’s, so they have been training together and pushing each other. Anfernee is a sprinter, but has proven he can run longer distances.” The women’s squad must overcome the loss of its top runner Katherine Toy, who graduated last fall, but concluded her career with school-record times in the two-mile distance, 5K and 6K. The Warhawks do return their second and third finishers from last season in junior Sharlie Brooks and sophomore HollyAnn Goble. Each runner enjoyed a strong first season with the program, combining for six top-15 finishes. “I know Sharlie worked extremely hard during the offseason,” Gross said of Brooks. “I named her a team captain based on her work ethic and leadership. I expect her to have a great junior year and to break the school record this season.” “I expect HollyAnn to be a sub-20 runner this year,” added Gross about Goble. “I know she is also internally driven to run well, so I have confidence she can accomplish it.” Savannah Brown, a member of the inaugural cross country team in 2011, is also back for her senior campaign following an injury-filled junior season. “I hope Savannah has a great senior season,” said Gross of Brown. “She has had an up-and-down career at AUM, but has worked extremely hard this offseason. She is also a tremendous leader to our team.” Additionally, the AUM women added six freshmen for the 2014 season. Suiting up for their first season with the Warhawks will be Katelynn Burns (Smiths Station HS), Kelly Dawson (Alabama Christian Academy), Megan Hawkins (Prattville HS), Tanishya Jones (Opelika HS), Danielle Riggs (Prattville Christian Academy) and Brooke Schultz (Wetumpka HS). “I am cautiously optimistic about the incoming runners, due to their productive times without a thorough training plan,” Gross said of his newcomers. “They seem to have come back in good shape, so I am hoping they can pick up where they left off at the end of their senior season (in high school). I really like that they are all motivated to succeed.” The Warhawks will run eight times this season, with the concluding meet being the SSAC Championship on Saturday, Nov. 8, in Clinton, Miss. The NAIA Cross Country National Championships will be held on Nov. 22 in Lawrence, Kan.Junior Shaw Cornelius

Coaching Staff

MICHAELGROSS

Head Coach | Auburn University at Montgomery, 1990Fourth Season

Michael Gross is entering his fourth year of coaching cross country at Auburn Montgomery. After originally graduating from AUM with a bachelor of science and a master of education in physical education, he now continues build a cross country program at his alma mater.

Gross was a distance runner in high school and continues to run for fitness and fun. For the past few years, he has been on a quest to run a marathon in every state, and he is closing in on that accomplishment. He has also completed ultra-marathons of 40 miles and 50 miles. Gross began his teaching career at Brewbaker Primary/Intermediate Schools before returning to AUM as a Teacher-in-Residence in 2004. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Physical Education at Auburn Montgomery to go along with his coaching duties. As a Physical Education Specialist, he had the opportunity to coach children and adolescents in the area of distance running at the public school level. He has also coached adults as a volunteer with the Leukemia Society’s Team-In-Training program, which helps prepare individuals to run marathons and half-marathons. In 2010, Gross was selected as the Hometown Hero by the Thunderbirds for his work in helping children understand and develop healthy lifestyle choices. His reward was a flight in a Thunderbird F-16. In the process of developing a new cross country program, Gross has set about to recruit athletes based on character, academics and athleticism, in that order. His philosophy is that character is the only thing that people truly possess and cannot be taken away. Academics are second because the degree that each of his athletes earns will guide their profession, not their running. And athleticism is last, because it is his job to make his runners better. Gross grew up in Tallassee, Ala. In addition to his degrees from AUM, he also holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in physical education from Auburn University. Gross is married to the former Marcilla Ann Cooper.

Director of Athletics

STEVE CROTZ

Director of Athletics Seventh Year

Missouri, 1979

Steve Crotz is currently in his seventh year as Athletic Director at Auburn Montgomery, following two stints as the interim athletic director. During his tenure, AUM teams have flourished, programs have been established and facilities have been improved. Student-athletes have also been a stalwart in the community and excelled in the classroom. Under his guidance, eight of AUM’s 10 sports have spent time in their respective NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Polls and teams have won six national championships. In addition, 236 student-

athletes have earned All-Conference, All-Division or All-Freshman team honors, while 101 have garnered All-American honors. AUM has added a softball program, as well as men’s and women’s cross country programs, increasing its number of varsity sports to 10. Crotz has overseen several facility upgrades, including the renovation of the basketball gymnasium to include a section of 304 cushioned, chair-backed seats on the home side of the court, the building of a new state-of-the-art press box at the AUM Softball Complex and the re-surfacing of all 12 tennis courts at the AUM Tennis Complex. In addition to the seating improvements in the gymnasium, Crotz also oversaw a remodeling project of the old weightroom that now houses the AUM Athletics Hall of Fame and serves as a hospitality area for members of the Courtside Club. Upgrades to the Softball Complex also included bleacher seating for more than 200 spectators directly behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand, a press area and increased storage. In the classroom, student-athletes have been equally impressive, as 213 athletes have earned All-Academic honors from the SSAC and 78 have been named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Three AUM student-athletes, women’s basketball standouts Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth, and men’s basketball’s David Gallagher, have been named the SSAC Honor Student Athlete. Within the community, staff, coaches and student-athletes have logged more than 1,000 hours of service. Crotz has worked with the AUM administration to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer. He has also spent the past two years serving as the chair of the Board of Athletic Directors within the Southern States Athletic Conference. For his efforts during the 2010-11 academic year, Crotz was selected the SSAC Athletic Director of the Year. Before focusing on administration, Crotz served 12 seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles, and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year following his team’s Elite Eight finish in the 1999-00 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent five years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball coach at Lindenwood University. While at LU, Crotz earned 126 wins and led the Lady Lions to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances. During his six years at the St. Charles, Mo., institution, he was named American Midwest Conference Coach-of-the-Year on four occasions. In October 2009, he was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz also spent nine years at Brentwood High School overseeing the girls’ basketball program and winning 210 games. Five times during that span he led Brentwood to the Missouri State Tournament where they won the state tournament in 1985 and finished as the runners-up in 1986 and 1990. For his efforts, Crotz was named the Missouri High School Coach of the Year in 1985. Crotz received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1979 and his master’s degree in secondary education from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the former Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgomery with their two children, Kelsey and Jacob.

The SSAC and NAIA

Founded in 1949, in what is known today as the Southern States Athletic Conference, the SSAC has prospered and excelled both athletically as well as academically in the Southeast region of the United States. The SSAC is currently made up of 14 institutions from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi. The conference was originally established as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GIAC) with six charter members, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the league was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference (GAC) and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. In November of 2012, the league announced that it planned to expand to 16 teams for the 2013-14 with the inclusion of Blue Mountain College, Martin Methodist College and Bethel (Tenn.) University from the TranSouth Conference. At the conclusion of the 2013-14 year, the league saw the departure of Southern Wesleyan University, Spring Hill College and Emmanuel College, which all transitioned to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, in addition to Southern Polytech State University, which was consolidated with Kennesaw State University. Those vacancies allowed for the admission of Dalton State College and Middle Georgia State College. Both institutions will compete within the SSAC during the 2014-15 season, giving the conference 14 total members. The SSAC hosts 14 conference championships including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s track and field. Since its inception and affiliation with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the conference has developed a reputation as being one of the premier conferences in the country in several sports. The SSAC has boasted 32 teams and 11 individuals with national titles, while 30 more teams have finished as national runners-up. With its office based in historic Montgomery, Ala., the conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Sam Knehans, Treasurer Sally Shoppe and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The 2014-15 academic year marks the 15th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the SSAC. Since joining the league in 2000, the university has collected 67 total conference regular season and tournament championships.

Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 39 years, AUM has claimed 23 national championships and seven of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Kansas City, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and more than 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion.

City of Montgomery

Montgomery is the capital of Alabama and the second largest city in the state with a population of 205,764, according to the 2010 census. The city, which was incorporated on Dec. 3, 1819, is located southeast of the center of the state. Montgomery is nationally known for its many historic and cultural landmarks and events such as the Alabama State Capitol, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church, First White House of the Confederacy, Montgomery Bus Boycott, Hank Williams Memorial, Alabama War Memorial and Alabama Shakespeare Festival. The city attracted the first electric street car system and the Wright Brothers’ first school for powered flight. Today, Montgomery is the home of both Maxwell and Gunter Air Force Bases. The city is the home of several public and private colleges, as well as military schools. Montgomery’s 15 colleges, universities and military schools provide world-class educational opportunities. In 2004, Montgomery landed one of the biggest economic development projects when Hyundai Motors Manufacturing Alabama built its $1.4 billion automotive plant. The Montgomery location became Hyundai’s first assembly and manufacturing plant in the United States. It employs more than 3,000 team members and currently produces the next generation Sonata sedan. That same year, Montgomery acquired a minor league baseball team called the Montgomery Biscuits, Class AA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Biscuits are the 2006 and 2007 Southern League Champions. The team plays in a 7,000-seat facility known as Riverwalk Stadium, which is owned by the city of Montgomery. The stadium boasts several seating styles: executive box, super box, lawn and suite level. Downtown Montgomery lies along the southern banks of the Alabama River, while the east side is the fastest-growing part of the city. Auburn Montgomery, the city’s two largest shopping malls and Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park, a 250-acre park which contains the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Montgomery Fine Museum of Fine Arts, are located on the east side of town. Today, the city is known for its renaissance of historic downtown and redevelopment of the riverfront.
