A Message from the Board Chairman and President

“You must look upon this work entrusted to you as one of the most important.”

—St. John Baptist De La Salle

As investors in the Lasallian mission of education, you recognize the sustainability and growth of Catholic education is predicated upon our continued support of the young people entrusted to our care and the strategic advancement of academic excellence

From the founding of De La Salle Institute in 1889, as a three-year business college, serving the needs of the immigrant families of Chicago, De La Salle Institute established itself with a global perspective in a growing world-class city

Those first days of De La Salle Institute provided the opportunity for all children to not only receive an excellent educational start in life, but gave everyone the ability to achieve the American Dream De La Salle’s accessibility for all learners at all levels is a hallmark of our Lasallian mission Engaging the mind and touching the heart since 1889

Our religious, economic, racial, and social diversity set the tone for a legacy of inclusivity that has created a mosaic that is the very fiber of De La Salle Institute Strengthened with our Lasallian values of faith, service, community, and social justice, we have provided the world with young women and men who are steadfast in the knowledge and love of God Generous in their service of the poor Willing to take their place in the global community

As De La Salle embarks on its future, we would like to announce to you, our investors, that in the fall of 2017, De La Salle Institute will merge our two campuses and become a co-educational high school This transformation will allow us to strengthen our academic curriculum and utilize our resources wisely by providing additional resources toward student financial needs

This Investors Report reveals the progress De La Salle has achieved with your support With your continued investment, we can build on our significant growth while providing new opportunities for current and future Meteors Together, let us create the future of Lasallian education and Engage the Mind and Touch the Hearts of the students entrusted to our care!

As the Scripture says in the Gospel of Luke, “Can any-thing good come from Nazareth?” With the ongoing events that continue to plague Chicago’s South Side, some may ask the same question “Can anything good come from the South Side of Chicago?” Yes, just look at our Meteors!

For 126 years, De La Salle Institute has continued to be a bright light, a beacon of hope, and the bridge to great futures for count-less generations of Chicagoans Our graduation rate is 100 percent and 96 percent of our recent graduates are attending some of the most prestigious universities and colleges across the country Over the next four years, the Class of 2015 will earn nearly $6 5 million in scholarships Two percent of our graduates are in the military serving our country and another two percent are finding their way in the workforce “Can anything good come from the South Side of Chicago?” Yes, just look at our Meteors!

Nearly 140 faculty and staff members teach and coach our De La Salle students the value of discipline and team-work They nurture their talents and abilities, and show them compassion and a sense of pride Seventy-five percent of our highly-qualified faculty have earned their Masters or Doctoral degrees Currently, we have 15 full-time faculty and staff members who are alumni of De La Salle Institute

Last year, De La Salle provided more than $1 8 million in financial aid to help keep the tuition affordable for our fam-ilies These Meteors also provide service in a variety of ministries, including helping the poor and homeless This past year, the senior class provided 28,000 hours of commu-nity service Once they graduate, each one of these young men and women is empowered with the skills and confi-dence to meet the challenges they will face in their lives

Over 20,000 alumni have impacted our city, our country, and our world by contributing their talents and sharing their journey of faith with others De La Salle has produced many leaders includ-ing five Chicago mayors Equally noteworthy are the thousands of other graduates—teachers, merchants, CEOs, athletes, firemen,

policemen, doctors, nurses, carpenters, journalists, artists, writers, and tradesmen—who have made their own contributions Some have joined religious orders or have generously given of their time to worthy causes De La Salle has instilled in many of its alumni a spirit of volunteerism and giving “Can anything good come from the South Side of Chicago?” Yes, just look at our Meteors!

In 2013, De La Salle’s Board of Directors began a strategic plan-ning process After much market research from current and potential families, the Board set an aggressive agenda of inno-vation and transformation In the fall of 2017, De La Salle Institute will merge our two campuses and become a co-edu-cational high school As part of the strategic planning process, De La Salle will launch a capital campaign beginning in 2016 The campaign is the next step to building the bridge to great futures by transforming our curriculum in the following areas:

\\ Enhancement of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Architecture/Aviation and Math)

\\ Expansion of the Computer Science Curriculum

\\ Innovation of the Fine Arts Program (Media, Theatre, Music)

\\ Investment in the International Students Program

\\ Creation of a Lasallian Spirituality Center

To remain a bright light, a beacon of hope, and a bridge to great futures on the South

Side of Chicago, we must rely on the generosity of our benefac-tors to accomplish this aggressive agenda By example and with the help of our alumni, parents, and friends, we will continue to provide engaging programs, high-quality faculty, and state-of-the-art facilities for our students

There is indeed something great happening on the South Side of Chicago It is De La Salle Institute Because of your involvement and investment, today’s Meteors are tomorrow’s leaders These leaders are making a positive impact in Chicago and throughout the world We thank you for your investment in this legacy ensuring that our Meteors con-tinue to be the bright light for Chicago and the world

BUILDING GREAT FUTURES

Saul Lopez ’19, Student ScholarTHOMAS J. CARROLL ’25 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPFor many students, attending De La Salle Institute is made possible through fi nancial assistance and private scholarships. Saul Lopez is one of these students. A freshman enrolled in the Honors Program, Saul is a scholarship recipient of the Thomas J. Carroll ’25 Endowed Scholarship, provided through the Thomas W. Dower Foundation. There are four De La Salle students who are the recipients of the endowed scholarship for the 2015–2016 academic year.

Attending De La Salle was Saul’s fi rst choice because it feels like home. He has the opportunity to learn new things and is learning how to be a good mentor. While taking Honors classes such as Algebra, World History, English Literature, and French, Saul also maintains a rigorous practice schedule as a member of De La Salle’s soccer team.

“De La Salle was my No.1 choice because I have friends who go here and they told me it was a very good school,” says Saul.

Since starting at De La Salle, Saul has made new friends and likes that his teachers have helped him with his demanding academic schedule. Outside of academic and athletic activities, he enjoys providing service to his local grammar school. Saul says, “I know

the importance of giving back and helping others just as others have helped me.”

Saul plans to attend a four-year institution after graduating from “D.” He also wants to be able to help future Meteors and volunteer his time to help others less fortunate. He is very grateful for the Thomas J. Carroll ’25 Endowed Scholarship which has helped him and his family.

Having partnered with the Dower Foundation since 1999, De La Salle continues its mission of providing an innovative Lasallian educational experience for our students. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Thomas W. Dower Foundation for its investment in and generous commitment to students like Saul.

You too, can play a signifi cant role in the lives of our Meteors. Your fi nancial support is very important to De La Salle, our students, and their families.

“De La Salle was my No. 1 choice because I have friends who go here and they told me it was a very good school.”

Taylor Wyatt ’18, Student ScholarMARTIN DE PORRES  ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPTaylor Wyatt, a member of the Class of 2018, came to De La Salle from St. Columbanus grammar school last year. Taylor is a recipient of the Martin De Porres Scholarship, which was established 15 years ago. She recently completed her fi rst academic quarter at De La Salle and did so in impressive fashion, attaining a 3.591 grade-point average. Taylor’s classes include Biology, Geometry, English, Spanish, Religion, and Physical Education.

A sophomore in the LaSalle College Prep Program, Taylor chose to attend De La Salle because of its unrivaled academic opportunities and the strong guidance the school off ers. Taylor is a hard-working student and is active in several extracurricular activities, such as the Robotics Club, Dance Club, and Book Club. She is grateful that her teachers are willing to help students and encourage them to excel inside and outside of the classroom.

“Having the Martin De Porres Scholarship is really important to me. It means I’ve done my best and it also helps my family a lot. Scholarships make it possible for students to attend De La Salle who might be unable to do so without them,” said Taylor.

Taylor is very proud to be a Martin De Porres scholar. She understands the value of helping others and giving back. She helps take care of her aging and ill grandparents. Her grandmother is blind. Taylor also volunteers at a local animal shelter because of her love for animals.

While her studies and volunteer work keep her very busy, she still fi nds time to read and draw, and this past summer, began learning sign language.

Once she graduates from De La Salle, Taylor plans to go to college and major in nursing to become an ER nurse. She will continue to give back and help motivate other students like so many who have helped her.

The Martin De Porres Scholarship provides fi nancial assistance to African-American students based on fi nancial need. The scholars must also maintain a B

average and provide community service to youth or the elderly. The scholarship has helped many students like Taylor, who otherwise might not have been able to attend De La Salle without fi nancial support.

With the generosity from the Martin De Porres Scholarship, we are able to further our mission of

providing an excellent and innovative education to students. On behalf of the entire

educational community, we extend our sincere appreciation to the

members from the Class of 1963 who generously support this

scholarship for our Meteors.

“Scholarships make it possible for students to attend De La Salle who might be unable to do so without them.”

We remain grateful to those individuals who remember De La Salle with a bequest or other means of deferred giving. You will not only honor your own memories and experiences, you build a legacy that will help thousands of students receive the Lasallian education that is the mission of De La Salle.

There are many ways you can give a gift that will last a lifetime and make a diff erence for countless students who hope to follow in your footsteps. Family members and friends who wish to make a gift to the Institute in memory of a loved one who graduated from De La Salle can now see their name listed on the memorial plaque which hangs adjacent to the school’s Signum Fidei Chapel at the Institute Campus.

Joshua Macias ’16, Student Scholar JOHN L. DOYLE ’51 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPDe La Salle Institute plays a critical role in the life of a student’s formative years. Being a Meteor means being a part of a community rich with educational innovation, Lasallian values, engaging activities and athletic excellence.

For many students, however, attending De La Salle is only made possible through private scholarships and fi nancial assistance. Joshua Macias is a recipient of the John L. Doyle ’51 Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship was established by Mrs. Lynn Doyle, the wife of John L. Doyle, for his love of the Institute and to honor his memory. She wanted to ensure that fi nancial assistance would be available for current and future students attending De La Salle.

Joshua chose De La Salle because of its diversity, Christian values, and the preparation for college. “De La Salle is a school unlike any other, and it has given me many opportunities that no other school could have,” Joshua said.

He expressed that De La Salle has given him the opportunity to travel out of the country and to provide services to those less fortunate, something he had only dreamed about doing. As a student in the College Prep Program, Joshua excels in the classroom, maintaining a 3.393 grade-point average. He is a member of the soccer

team, the swimming team and the water polo team. He is able to practice his swimming techniques at the nearby park district. Joshua is also involved in the Spanish, Mandarin, Boxing and Chemistry Clubs. Outside of school activities, he provides assistance during confi rmation classes every Sunday.

De La Salle has made a tremendous impact on Joshua’s life. “Throughout my De La Salle experience, I have met many new people who inspire me to become a better person and to get involved,” Joshua said.

His future plans include attending the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign to study accounting and business management. Joshua plans on giving back by providing youth with the opportunities he was aff orded through his guidance and generosity.

Through the commitment of the John L. Doyle ’51 Endowed Scholarship, De La Salle is able to further its mission of providing an excellent and innovative education to its students like Joshua. On behalf of

the entire educational community, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Lynn Doyle for her

generous support of the students attending De La Salle and for continuing John’s legacy.

“De La Salle is a school unlike any other, and it has given me many opportunities that no other school could have.”

—Joshua Macias ’16

Kristina Sego ’17, Student ScholarBIG SHOULDERS VALENTI SCHOLARSHIPThey say that when you give back, you gain so much more. This rings true for the scholarship provided by the Valenti Charitable Foundation that was established through the Big Shoulders Fund to assist students based on fi nancial need as well as academic and leadership potential. They wanted to make a diff erence in the lives of students who without fi nancial assistance would not have been able to attend a quality Catholic school.

The Valenti Charitable Foundation Scholarship has provided support for young women and men so that they can achieve an excellent and innovative education. There are currently 12 student scholars who have been awarded the scholarship at De La Salle for the 2015-2016 school year.

Kristina Sego ’17, one of the Valenti scholars, is currently a junior in De La Salle’s Honors Program. She picked De La Salle because it was the high school of choice for her entire family.

Also, De La Salle was close to home and her older sister, Marija, graduated from De La Salle in 2015. Marija is now attending Loyola University of Chicago.

One of the major ways that De La Salle has had an impact on Kristina’s life is through the great people she has met and how it is preparing her for the future. She has developed many meaningful relationships since attending De La Salle.

She most enjoys her teachers and her vigorous course schedule. Kristina takes all Honors classes including Geometry, Church History, Chemistry, U.S. History, American Literature, and French III. Kristina excels in the classroom, maintaining a 4.364 GPA and ranking No. 11 in the 94-member Class of 2017.

To help future Meteors, Kristina plans to give back. “I like De La Salle because of its friendly environment. I feel at home at D. I plan to help others as the Big Shoulders Fund has helped me,” Kristina said.

Because of the generosity of the Valenti Charitable Foundation Scholarship provided

through the Big Shoulders Fund, De La Salle continues its mission of providing a quality Catholic education to its students. Since 1989, the Big Shoulders Fund has been instrumental in connecting individuals to support the mission of De La Salle and

continues to be a great partner in our eff orts to educate the young women

and men of Chicago.

“I like De La Salle because of its friendly environment. I feel at home at D. I plan to help others as the Big Shoulders Fund has helped me.”

Each year, De La Salle Institute hosts the traditional all-class year alumni banquet. At the 119th Annual Alumni Banquet, we commemorated all fi ve-year anniversary classes and also celebrated De La Salle’s 125th birthday. The alumni banquet was held at De La Salle Institute on Friday, October 10, 2014 with special congratulations to the Jubilee Classes of 1964 and 1989. Other classes celebrating reunions were the Classes of 1939, 1944, 1949, 1954, 1959, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009.

A very important part of the celebration is establishing the anniversary class gift scholarships. These scholarships represent the care for the past and future excellence of De La Salle Institute. Whether alumni attend the banquet or not, support of the class scholarships are a way of saying “thank you” to De La Salle for a privileged education. On behalf of the entire De La Salle educational community, we would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to all anniversary classes for their support of our Meteors!

THE PARENT PROGRAMFinancial support of the Parent Program allows the school to pay for the cost of normal, educational operating expenses without passing on the entire diff erence to De La Salle families. It encompasses any contributions asked of all parents each year to help cover the annual operating defi cit. The following includes parents’ contributions received over and above tuition and fees. De La Salle Institute is grateful for the generosity of its parents.

Two student-athletes from De La Salle’s boys basketball team earned Division I scholarships as Karl Harris ’15 signed with LaSalle University while Brandon Hutton ’15 committed to the University of Iowa.
