PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2014 –2015

I would like to start by thanking all members for their enthusiastic support of the Club thisyear. We enjoyed our meetings and each other’s company and this set the foundation foranother year of service to our community. Ray Barrett with Program responsibility organ-ised interesting and informative speakers contributing to the success of each meeting. The year started with the return of our team from Taveuni, Fiji, having helped finance andbuild a pre school centre. It was rewarding to receive Meritorious Recognition for this pro-ject from outgoing DG Merv Ericson. The year also started with our meeting catering be-ing provided by Tasty-Az. Many visitors have been impressed that our Club actively sup-ports each week the youth with disabilities who work at Tasty-Az and serve our meals.Camp Awakenings occurred early in the Rotary year, and we provided good support forthis very worthwhile program, with members at both the Camp and the Recharge atWandin Hall to show support for the program. Russell Hayes plays a key role in this activ-ity and we thank him. We continued our other Youth programs under the leadership ofPat Cullen and this year put an effort into strengthening relations with Secondary schools, following the Focus on High Schools theme of the Youth District Forum. We thank Pat forhis tireless work in this area. We continued our regular youth programs – RYLA, RYPEN,Junior Citizens Awards, and MUNA although our MUNA teams withdrew and were re-placed by a team from another area.

Under Carol Pitman’s leadership our community presence and support is well recognised. We installed Welcome to Seville signs with community Club badges, painted the SevilleRotunda, supported the refurbishment of the Seville Scout Hall with a $2400 donation, and are developing a project to erect a Silvan War Memorial. We have succeeded ingaining both a District Grant and an Anzac Centenary Grant for this project which wehope to complete later in 2015.

Other activities that the Community value are the Remembrance Day and Anzac Day ser-vices that we organise – this year the number of attendees were almost double those ofprior years. Our Australia Day breakfast was another success and while this provides avalued community service it also provided us a surplus of $3800. Our speakers receivedpositive feedback, as did our choice of award recipients, which included a Paul HarrisFellow award to Michael Halligan. Again, many members were involved and deservethanks, especially Carol Pitman who led the organisation of the event.

Raffle ticket sales also give us an added community visibility. Our Christmas Trailer Raf-fle raised $8700 and the winner was an overjoyed local single mum who could only af-ford to buy one ticket. We decided to reduce the frequency of our Wood Raffle ticketsales and instead start giving trailer loads of wood to needy families and the response todate has been very favourable. Providing gate services to the Yarra Valley Football andNetball League for their finals later this year (together with Healesville and Upper YarraClubs) will provide a new source of funds and visibility of Rotary to a different communitygroup. A large number of members were involved in these raffles but I would like to ac-knowledge Gavan McIntyre’s leadership particularly with the Christmas Trailer. While on the topic of Community Awareness of Rotary, we ran a series of local Radio FM

99.9 programs along with the Upper Yarra and Healesville Clubs which received some

community feedback, and the local papers continue to publicise our activities. Thank you

Greg Kelson for organising the radio sessions and being an accomplished interviewer.

Brian Hodgson has put a lot of effort into the design and bringing on line our Clubwebsite, which we hope may attract new members as well as being a source of infor-mation to members. Our Annual Report this year will be available to members on linefor ease of reference as well as saving club administrative costs.Brian has also led the Club to undertake an Interplast project in 2016 and to this endtwo fund raisers were held, a Trivia night and a Film night, and as a result $15,500has been raised to date. Fund raisers in the coming year will hopefully bring fundsraised to the needed $45,000 or more if a club member is to participate in the project. We thank Brian for his leadership on this project. We have also provided unplanned support for needy causes. A local family was sup-ported by a donation of $1000 towards a carer for a child who suffers cerebral palsyand was recovering from hip surgery. We also donated $2000 via RAWCS plus agenerator and rice for Vanuatu following Cyclone Pam, and we donated $2000 to theNepal earthquake relief efforts via the Rotary Club of Healesville’s contacts with theNepal Women's Foundation.

Gavan McIntyre organised several fellowship events, a luncheon at Rose Cottageand a Car Rally ( with help from Ray Barrett). A third fellowship event was a dinnerheld in place of a meeting that was cancelled in favour of attendance by a party often to the District Conference. Another fellowship/fund raising event was hosting aluncheon for the Rotary Club of Knox’s visit to the Yarra Valley. Two informative Vocational visits were organised, one to the Garden City Plastics inMonbulk and the other to the Trafalgar Abattoir which is nearing completion after arebuild. We thank Heinz Budweg for our Vocational activities. In the unexciting but necessary area of governance, we adopted a new Constitutionand By Laws, and we became a Registered Fund Raising organisation, and will haveto meet certain reporting requirements, as well as renewing this registration everythree years.

Membership, the most critical area for our future, was the one area of disappoint-ment. We gained a new and enthusiastic member in Tony Knox, but lost five mem-bers, We have several good prospects but all members need to work harder in thisarea which is critical to the club’s long term future.I would like to thank all Board members for their support – the Committee Chairswhose work has already been acknowledged, our Treasurer Russell Hayes who alsoplays a leading role in Wheelchairs for Kids throughout the District, and SecretaryGraham Edward who managed to continue on despite Carmel’s illness. Thanks arealso due to Sergeant Clive McPherson for creatively leading one of the highlights ofour weekly gatherings. Others with weekly responsibilities include Peter Manders(Bulletin), John Hassan (Bar), and Cliff Riseborough (Attendance) and I thank themfor their work.

Finally I would like to acknowledge the support we receive from the members of In-ner Wheel at events that included the Trivia night, Australia Day breakfast, and An-zac Day morning tea.Past President David Gamble positioned the Club well for this past year, and I am

confident that incoming President Ray Barrett will lead us to a very successful 2015-

2016.

Carried forward balance $48,629.59

Main Account cash book balance $7,233.97Fund Raising Account cash book balance $9,343.84Fund Raising Term Deposit $25,000.00Fund Raising Term Deposit – International Committee $7,051.78

TOTAL FINANCIAL RESOURCES AT END OF MAY 2015$48,629.59

The clubs combined financial resources as at end May of $48,630 had increased by appx $18,000in the eleven month period. In looking at how healthy the $18k increase actually is, the $4,000 in respectto the film night and also the $7,000 term deposit both need to be considered allocatedfor a future Interplast Project of the International Committee. Similarly the $1,786 grant received fromVeterans Affairs is earmarked to be spent only on the Silvan War Memorial project. Also in the current financial year we have changed the club timetable with respect to payment of membersfees and the $4,480 received for 2015/16 members fees is in respect to and required for the RI fees fallingdue after 1st July 2015 and needs to be virtually held aside until after that date. Therefore if these items totalling appx $17,250 are “discounted” the situation represents a static year withthe club Members Funds barely breaking even for the period and the Fund Raising expenditure beingmaintained at a level to match the club’s capacity to finance the various causes coming to its attention.

CAMP AWAKENINGS ACCOUNT Eleven month period 1-7-2014 TO 31-5-2015Bank account in trust for stakeholders opening balance $11,224.88Income for eleven months

Bank account in trust for stakeholders closing balance $2,109.49The financial report in respect to Camp Awakenings Yarra Ranges showing a decline by $9k is mainly in-

dicative of timing in that this year in contrast to last we are still awaiting $6,600 from Community Banks

plus $4,500 from six Yarra Ranges Rotary clubs to fund the 2015 camp.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Community Committee’s year was busy with the usual line up of annual events. July, August, September, wood raffle with help from most Club members in ticket selling.

Income$2,691 Christmas trailer raffle located at local venues with considerable success at the Car Show.

Earnings $10,130 less costs $1,406 result profit $8,724 Australia Day turnout of 200 guests, feedback as very successful, earnings $4,545 less

costs $667 result profit $3,878. Made extra special by the invitation of Warwick Bisley to themain speaker Major General Paul Stevens (ret). An excellent speaker and a very apt topicwith the Centenary year for Gallipoli coming up. The change of sponsorship from Wool-worths to IGA was a huge contributor to our profitability, with great thanks to the Entwistlefamily.

Remembrance Day with good attendance from the local schools. ANZAC Day had an exceptional turnout, with many of the attendees joining us for the first

time. Alan Henderson’s donation of new, unsold magazines offered at the car show and partner

evenings netted $194 The Seville Township signs erected with local clubs and associations’ badges. $500 handed over to the Wandin Football Club (from last year’s battery drive) $2550 paid to the Seville Scouts for the new entrance door to their refurbished hall. $1000 paid to Interchange Outer East to assist local family in need of help with their son. Seville rotunda tidied and repainted. Firewood raffles - It was decided that instead of raffle ticket selling every week in the sea-

son, that every second week a trailer of split wood would be delivered into the community. The first two trailers have been delivered to two families in need of help.Following the theft of the club trailer in May a replacement trailer has been purchased inorder that firewood activities may continue.

The opportunity of participating in The Great Community Raffle was offered to severalgroups and taken up by Seville Community House which can earn $500 from their sales,Seville Primary School aiming at $1,000 and Seville Junior Netball Club targeting $1,000.

Grant of $1,786 received for the Silvan War Memorial. Waiting to hear from Bendigo Bankgrant, applied for by David Gamble. A project which is progressing, albeit slowly, with dog-ged persistence by Gavan McIntyre, who is working through the labyrinth that is the Shire ofYarra Valley. It is looking good for the chosen site, near the lone pine, outside Silvan Pri-mary School. This project should advance in the next Rotary year.

Greg Kelson, contributed greatly to the Club’s profile by working with the local radio stationand conducting a very plausible interview.

Thank you to all Community Committee members for their contribution to a good year.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE

Brian Hodgson ( C), Warwick Bisley ( PC), John Hasan, Max McWilliam,Paul Martin, Cliff Riseborough, John Sanders, Neil Tassell.

At our first meeting, a brief report was made of the previous year’s Fiji project. It was decidednot to continue with a formal connection with construction or sponsorship of students at TaveuniIsland. Individual sponsors would be able to continue their existing arrangements directly withABCD via Templestowe Rotary Club.

The committee supported a proposal for assistance with e-learning in Mathematics on TaveuniIsland. The proposal comprised seeking donation of current but unwanted Computer AlgebraSystem (CAS) calculators from ex VCE students, shipping 60 of these to Fiji and providing aweek’s professional development in their use. This project was not initiated but is consideredworthy of consideration in the future.

It was decided to focus on a Rotary Club of Wandin Interplast Project, to be completed on or be-fore the end of the 2016 – 17 Rotary year. We needed to raise $50 000. The plan involved

some club fundraising, targeted corporate fundraising, seeking financial support from cluster clubs and theachievement of matching grants from the Rotary Founda-tion. The first fundraising effort was a Trivia Night con-ducted on 15 November. Light snacks were provided withthe assistance of the Inner Wheel and a bar selling beer, wine and soft drinks was conducted. This made it unnec-essary for patrons to bring anything with them and en-abled us to ‘add value’ to the funds raised. The trivianight raised $7 000, a significant proportion coming fromthe silent auction and the ‘games of skill’.

A movie night fundraiser was proposed and a number ofoptions were considered including screening some olderAustralian movies at the Wandin Hall and running a pro-

gram at the Memo in Healesville. It was decided to hold the film night at Croydon Cinemas witha premiere of Aloha and a ‘Champagne supper’. The admission fee was $8 and no charge wasmade by the proprietor for using the space in the theatre for the supper. By charging $25 perperson our 200 patrons earned us $3 000 despite the long weekend and an average movie.

With the end of the financial year approaching we encouraged people to make tax deductible do-nations to “Interplast”. Within three days $3,750 was donated.

In addition to the Interplast project the Club has also made emergency contributions of $2 000 toboth the Vanuatu and Nepal relief funds. Proceeds from the wood raffle are being directed to theNepal contribution.

General discussion was held about selection of a major International project. Search for a newproject focus in Laos / Cambodia is encouraged. We also obtained information about the distri-bution of the ‘gravity light’ – a low energy light using a recyclable source – and feel this warrantsconsideration in the future.

VOCATIONAL SERVICE

Heinz Budweg (C), Rod Brooke, Fred Hadley, Ian Rawson.

Ben Wilson the grandson of the original owner of Garden City Plastics, Camms Rd, Monbulk wasour very welcoming host during our vocational visit. Members, Partners and guests were shownall aspects of the plastic moulding business.

Our first stop was to see the numerous numbers of colours used to produce garden pots, and how these are mixed with the raw material and then fed into the moulding machines.

We saw a large collection of dies required to produce each different shaped pot.

We were able to see how the die produced the parts and the staff sorting and packing thefinished product ready for distribution.

If pots required special printing they were transferred to the print section.

A Wandin Rotary coffee cup was presented the Ben before our departure.

Our evening concluded at the Monbulk Bowling Club, where members were able to enjoy a mealand fellowship.

Another very nice evening was had by us thanks to the organisation of Les and Nola Sharp.

Les ably drove us all to member Peter Polovinka’s abattoir in Trafalgar, Gippsland. Peter gave usa guided tour of the work he is undertaking to bring the business and the premises up to a stateof the art export quality facility.

During our visit we realised what an enormous endeavor this project entails.

Thank you Peter for the time and information you gave us during our visit. Our evening con-cluded with fellowship whilst enjoying a delicious BBQ tea provided by Nola and Les before re-turning home to Wandin.

Thanks to Les and Nola for making the visit possible.
